Abstract

Sidenreng Rappang Regency experiences limited access to higher education due to a shortage of adequate facilities. One of the local higher education institutions, Ichsan University of Sidenreng Rappang, currently operates in the former regency office under a non-permanent lease contract. This conversion of office space into an educational facility triggers a crisis of physical identity, restricts academic development, and disrupts the comfort and efficiency of the academic community. This descriptive qualitative study proposes the design of a new campus for Ichsan University by applying a Neo-Vernacular Architecture approach. Primary data were collected through field observations, site surveys, and interviews with the university management and community figures. These data were integrated with secondary data comprising regulatory studies and Bugis local wisdom literature, which were subsequently processed through data reduction and triangulation stages. The study produces a comprehensive campus design framework that integrates traditional Bugis cultural values. The transformation of local elements is realized modernly through the adaptation of the three-layer macrocosm concept (Rakkeang, Watang Pola, Awa Bola) into building mass zoning, the implementation of the Sulapa Appa philosophy into spatial geometry, a climate-based mass orientation (bola mabbuju), and the stylization of traditional local decorative arts on contemporary facade details. It can be concluded that the application of Neo-Vernacular Architecture successfully aligns the identity of local wisdom with current higher education facilities. This design not only provides a versatile and sustainable venue for Tridharma (the Three Pillars of Higher Education) activities but also serves as an architectural realization that reinforces institutional identity and the pride of the Sidenreng Rappang community.

Abstract

Urbanisasi yang pesat di Manokwari Barat telah memicu ketegangan spasial antara rencana induk perkotaan formal dan kebutuhan sosial-ekonomi masyarakat setempat. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki fenomena penguasaan ruang publik dan pembentukan ruang publik swadaya di Ruang Terbuka Hijau (GOS) di Manokwari Barat, dengan fokus pada area Lapangan Borarsi dan koridor hijau Wosi. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi spasial dan etnografi arsitektur, data dikumpulkan melalui observasi partisipatif, pemetaan perilaku, dan wawancara mendalam semi-terstruktur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penguasaan spasial terwujud dalam tiga dimensi: temporal, fisik-material (modifikasi pagar, trotoar, dan penerangan jalan), dan teritorial (klaim informal). Penguasaan berkelanjutan ini bertransisi menjadi proses pembentukan ruang publik swadaya yang memberikan makna baru sebagai ruang ekspresi bagi budaya anak muda dan ruang bertahan hidup bagi usaha mikro (UMKM). Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa terdapat benturan paradigma yang tajam antara pendekatan desain dari atas ke bawah oleh pemerintah daerah dan kebutuhan fungsional dari bawah ke atas masyarakat. Oleh karena itu, arsitektur publik yang sukses harus memprioritaskan fleksibilitas spasial untuk memungkinkan partisipasi warga dalam membentuk lingkungan perkotaan.

Abstract

The Indonesian government prioritizes Wind Power Plants (PLTB) within the national energy mix, positioning Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap) Regency as a strategic pilot location with the operation of the 75 MW Sidrap PLTB. However, current research on wind energy remains heavily dominated by climatological and technical aspects. This creates a significant gap due to the absence of a physical facility that integrates social dimensions, innovation governance, and environmental risk mitigation, such as addressing local high-wind phenomena. This study aims to design a Wind Energy Research and Development Center facility in Watang Pulu District, Sidrap Regency. The design method employs a Glass-Box approach that is systematic, transparent, and data-driven. The functional design concepts of the building are integrated through the application of Bioclimatic Architecture, which is responsive to the tropical climate and adapts the local wisdom of traditional Bugis Stilt House architecture. The design results demonstrate an axial-patterned site layout that measurably segregates public, semi-public, and private zones to reduce noise pollution from the main road. The main mass configuration is aerodynamically developed into a curved geometry (oval/C-shape) to minimize wind resistance, deflect solar radiation via a secondary skin, and optimize vertical-horizontal cross-ventilation through an elevated building structure (stilt understructure). This facility is equipped with modular aerodynamics laboratories, a field turbine testing area, and a public educational gallery. The design of this research center successfully synergizes renewable energy technology with contextual-bioclimatic architecture. This facility serves as an energy-independent, adaptive, and sustainable research infrastructure solution capable of strengthening cultural identity and local public energy literacy

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a strategic role in the economy of Wajo Regency. However, their development still faces fundamental obstacles such as limited market access, low management literacy, and the absence of adequate supporting facilities. Therefore, the construction of an appropriate Integrated Business Service Center (PLUT) Building is required, which is also capable of preserving local cultural heritage amidst the current of globalization. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze site conditions, regulations, spatial flow, and the programmatic needs of PLUT services. The design foundation utilizes the concept of Neo-Vernacular Architecture through the reinterpretation of physical characteristics and philosophical values of traditional Bugis-Wajo architecture-such as stilt house typology, teddong roof shapes, and spatial organization-applied into a contemporary public facility design that is responsive to the tropical climate. The design results show that the integration of business service functions (consultation, training, business incubation, and product exhibition) can be effectively organized through adaptive spatial zoning that separates public and private areas. The building's visual design transforms traditional Bugis elements into a modern facade using hybrid materials (concrete, glass, laser-cut metal) and shading vegetation that optimizes natural ventilation and lighting. The Neo-Vernacular Architecture approach applied to the Wajo Regency PLUT Building successfully fulfills functional needs and preserves local identity. This facility succeeds in realizing sustainable public architecture that strengthens the MSME ecosystem while serving as a symbol for the local community.

Abstract

The introduction of this research is motivated by the importance of artificial lighting quality in classrooms on the academic performance of architecture students. Many studies have shown that good lighting can improve concentration and material comprehension, but few studies have specifically examined its impact on architecture students in Indonesia, particularly at Ichsan University, Sidenreng Rappang. An abstract consists of 150-250 words and includes the core information of the research or work. This study aims to analyze how the quality of artificial lighting affects the academic performance of students in the architecture program. The research method used is a descriptive quantitative approach, where data were collected through surveys and measurements of lighting quality in several classrooms. Students' academic performance was measured and compared to the existing lighting conditions, using statistical analysis to determine the correlation. The results indicate a significant relationship between the quality of artificial lighting and improved student academic performance. In conclusion, improving the quality of classroom lighting can positively impact the academic performance of architecture students.
