Abstract

This study examines the translation quality of the novel Gadis Jakarta by Najib Kailani from Arabic into Indonesian. Translation quality is an essential aspect to ensure that meaning is accurately conveyed and acceptable to target readers. This study aims to analyze the translation quality based on Nababan’s model, which includes accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a quantitative approach to scoring. The data consist of 140 translation units taken from chapters 3 and 5 of the novel. The data were assessed by three respondents using a three-point scale for each aspect. The results show that the overall translation quality is categorized as high, with average scores indicating that readability is the highest aspect, followed by acceptability and accuracy. This indicates that the translation is generally easy to understand and acceptable in the target language, although minor inaccuracies in meaning transfer are still found in some data. In conclusion, the translation of Gadis Jakarta demonstrates good quality in conveying meaning from the source language into the target language, with a need for improvement in maintaining semantic accuracy.

Abstract

This study maps the emerging themes and methodological approaches characterizing translation and interpreting (T&I) research published by Indonesian-affiliated authors between 2020 and 2024. A systematic mapping review design was adopted, drawing on Grant and Booth (2009) and Cooper (2016), with data collected from Google Scholar via Publish or Perish and GARUDA using bilingual keyword clusters. Following systematic screening of 1,453 deduplicated records, 753 publications were included in the final corpus. Findings reveal four dominant thematic clusters: machine translation quality evaluation, audiovisual translation, translation techniques and strategies, and cultural and literary translation. Interpreting studies account for less than 9% of the corpus, reflecting not merely a research gap but an institutional failure to nurture interpreting as a distinct academic and professional discipline in Indonesia. Qualitative textual analysis dominates methodologically, with an emerging computational strand concentrated in internationally indexed outlets. Abstract

Abstract In the past decade, Indonesia has experienced a significant rise in applications for UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) status, leading to a growing demand for interpreters during field evaluation missions. These missions involve complex interlinguistic communication between UNESCO evaluators and local stakeholders. Despite this, limited scholarly attention has been given to the role of interpreters and the strategies they employ in such contexts. This study aims to analyze the role of the interpreter and the consecutive interpreting strategies employed during the Kebumen Geopark field evaluation mission in Central Java. Adopting a qualitative descriptive design, the study examines audio recordings of interpreting activities among UNESCO evaluators, local site representatives, and the interpreter. The analysis is guided by the interpreting strategy framework proposed by Li (2015). The findings reveal that the interpreter played a crucial mediating role in facilitating effective communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries, particularly in conveying geopark-related concepts and development narratives. The interpreter consistently employed consecutive interpreting approach and utilized a range of strategies, including addition, omission, morpho-syntactic transformation, approximation, compression, and restructuring, often in combination within a single interpreting segment to enhance clarity, accuracy, and audience comprehension.
