Abstract

This article aims at showing how the perspectives of genre and multimodality contribute significantly to the pre-translation process. Ability to digest the source text and to transfer it into an equal target text therefore fulfill part of the competencies of a qualified translator. Five advertorial texts of Garuda Indonesia are scrutinized to see their micro and macro structures. By using genre perspective, components of the texts like communicative purpose, institutional and cultural agenda, ideology of the writer, how the writer positions his/her readers, the generic convention in terms of lexis, syntax, rhetorical structure and rhetorical devices are seen integratedly. Since all texts are multimodal (Kress, 2010), the advertorials of Garuda Indonesia are therefore representing ensembles of modes which are specifically selected by the sign maker. By using these approaches, this article has shown a model of looking at promotional texts for translation purposes in which a series of steps needs to be adopted.

Abstract

This article is aimed at elaborating a mostly used strategy-regret/ apology in Indonesian refusals realized by proficient English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Data were taken from writer's qualitative research data in 2010 on 18 EFL learners whose TOEFL score was 450 above using Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and were analyzed by using combined refusal classification by Wannaruk (2005) and Campillo (2009) by two raters. Proficient EFL learners used regret/ apology in the initial or final position in their refusals to mitigate, to provide support for the interlocutor who was actually or potentially malaffected by a violation, and to humiliate himself or herself to some extent and to admit to fault and responsibility for a violation. This is truly culture specific and partially support Syahri's statement (2007) that Indonesian native speakers get accostumed to using 'sorry' in opening their conversations.

Abstract

This article tries to describe translation procedures applied by a translator -Lily Devita Sari-- in transferring American cultural words and expressions from English into Indonesian. By using Stephenie Meyer's novel Twilight and its Indonesian translation as the source of data, the writer applies a qualitative descriptive method to describe translation procedures used by the translator in transferring those cultural words and expressions. The result of the study proves that there are, at least, ten translation procedures applied by Lily Devita Sari, namely tranf erence, naturalisation, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, through-translation, shift or transposition, recognized translation, reduction, expansion, and additions.

Abstract

In today's current reforms, globalization, and regional autonomy contexts, the Indonesian bureaucracy needs to be supported by qualified translators/interpreters. To that end, this article discusses the efforts in institutional and quality development through the Functional Position of Translator (JFP). From the institutional aspect, the article outlines the steps of the Ministry of State Secretariat to establish and implement the JFP. With respect to the quality of the translators/interpreters, the articleunderlines that the JFP is a unique and prone to risk functional position. Therefore, both the Ministry of State Secretariat as well as the translators/interpreters needs to consistently and continuously maintain and enhance the quality of the JFP translators/interpreters.

Abstract

The present article reports a comparison between two versions of translation in order to reveal variabilities in translation. Research data analysis indicates that to a certain degree the two versions of the translation under investigation are divergent from one another in relation to the ways the message of source text was rendered into the target texts and to their quality. The first version tended to be oriented to the target language evidenced by 1) the provision of additional information in the form of annotation, 2) the adaptation of concepts or cultural terms, 3) the use of specific equivalence, 4) the rendetion of address forms based on the context of target language, and 5) the use of equivalence on the basis of pragmatic force considerations. In addition, the two versions of the translation have the same level of accuracy, the translation produced by Dian Vita Elliyati is more acceptable and readable for the target readers. This is due to the fact that she is sensitive towards the contexts of situation and culture as well as to the function and purpose of the translation.

Abstract

Stylistics theory is an alternative approach in assessing poetry translation. This study investigates the style of both Countee Cullen's poem -"Incident"- as the source text and Taufik Ismail's translation - "Kejadian"- as the target text. Based on a stylistics theory applied to translation proposed by Khomeijani Farahani (2005), both poems as the source of the data are analyzed based on three criteria: the equivalence accuracy, the formal loyalty, and the naturalness of translation. The results of the study proves that there is an obvious gap between them in terms of semantic, pragmatic, and poetic equivalence. In the criterion offormal loyalty, the deviation lies on rhyming pattern. While in the criterion of naturalness, the translator managed to build an easily accepted discourse structure for target text readers.

Abstract

The topic of this article is the translation of children's literature, particularly as it pertains to the application of translation theory. The article discusses children's literature, the aims of children's literature translation, the culture influencing children's literature translation, and the challenges in the translation of children's literature that consist of the adaption of cultural contexts, the modification of cultural values, the translator's understanding of child readers of children's literature, the difficulty of languages and language styles and the readers characteristics. Based on the discussion, it can be concluded that thetranslation of children's literature is not an easy task for a translator due to the fact that a translator does not only translate the language but must also adapt and adjust to the different cultures of both thesource and target languages. Besides, the children's reading of translated literature books aims to make them cultivate an open mind on their future world, develop their sense of humanity and environment in other countries, and learn foreign languages.

Hence, the researcher concludes that this novel could also serve as a source of preliminary information for those people who are yet familiar with the Asperger syndrome.

Abstract

Lyrics to a song serve not only as a complement but also constitute an important part to determine the theme and mission of a song. Lyrics can stir up emotions of happiness, sadness, and enthusiasm to those who listen to the song. Thus, translating the lyrics of a song should take into account these elements in addition to its aesthetic element. For that reason, this paper discusses the translation of the lyrics of the song 'Insya Allah' into Indonesian and English (TT/Target Text) from theArabic version (ST/Source Text) in order to acquire a level of "equivalence" for translating the ST into TT. The results show that the translation of the song's lyrics into Indonesian and English are able to convey the meaning and message of the lyrics from Arabic, although its rendition has not yet captured perfectly the aesthetic element.
