This article analyzes the quality of language usage utilized by writers/translators of bilingual handbooks for Physics, Economics and History that are used in Indonesian Junior High Schools. Ten translation version texts produced by the writers/translators are collected to be the objects of the research to be analysed for their quality of grammatical construction as well as lexical selection. The assessment of three raters are also obtained as the data for the accuracy and the acceptability of the texts, whereas the assessment of the users of the books are collected to verify the readibility of the texts. Although the results still show several weaknesses in grammatical construction and lexical choices, the writers/translators generally produced good quality translations. This is evidenced by the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the texts that are of high rate. Among the lessons that can be derived from this analysis is that writers/ translators are recommended to keep upgrading their skills in the use of the English grammar and also in the choice of English vocabulary in order to attain excellence in their profession. Interpreting is an oral/verbal translation activity, translating an oral message from the source language to the target language appropriate to the context and culture of the target language. There exist differences between translation and interpreting, namely in terms of time and faithfulness. In practice, in interpreting, the translator does not have the opportunity to use a dictionary or other reference materials when translation takes place due to time constraints (Gile, 1995: 112; Nababan, 2003: 116; Suryawinata & Hariyanto, 2003: 25). This book synopsis of “Community Language Interpreting” aims to help interpreters improve their ability in interpreting, be it in the community, business, or government sectors. This book written by Jieun Lee and Adrian Buzo presents an explanation on interpreters and interpreting in a plain language that is not convoluted, so that it is easily understood by readers, and beginning interpreters. Lee and Buzo explains that there are four methods of interpreting, namely consecutive (Consecutive Interpreting/CI), simultaneous (Simultaneous Interpreting/SI), dialogue (Dialogue Interpreting/DI), and sight translation. This book describes some aspects in relation to the definition of the transfer of language, interpreters, the procedure of the transfer of language, note-taking or recording techniques, the role of interpreters, ethics of interpreters, as well as some examples of dialogues in fields that often require the role of interpreters. The examples of texts presented in this book have managed to represent the four interpreting modes and can be used as training material for the NAATI accreditation/certification examinations, as well as a reference for interpreters, educators, and even students who are interested in studying and becoming interpreters. The aim of this research is to describe the translation technique used by the translator in translating the subtitle in Indonesian and the dubbing in Suroboyoan Javanese of the Lesson for An Assassin film. The result shows that the translator uses eight translation techniques, namely the paraphrase, transfer, imitation, condensation, deletion, taming and resignation techniques. By degree of frequency, the most frequently used techniques are the transfer with 255 data (46.9%), paraphrase: 176 data (32.4%), imitation: 65 data (11.9%), expansion: 40 data (7.4%), resignation: 28 data (5.2%), deletion: 15 data (2.8%), condensation: 13 data (2.4%), and taming: 2 data (0.36%). This article seeks to analyze the word order of selected lyrics of four poems by Chairil Anwar, and their two English translations by Liaw Yock Fang and Burton Raffel. Word orders are important in any acts of translation, let alone in translating poetry, as they contribute to the thematic systems and especially in the case of poetry, the poetic quality of the lines. Fifteen lyrics are selected to be analyzed using the Skeleton Analysis proposed by Leech et al, which is a simplified notation that can help indicate the layers of structure and, hence, word order of the lyrics in terms of syntactic functions. The results of the analysis show that Fang translates most of the lyrics more faithfully in terms of word orders than Raffel does. Therefore, it follows from this that Fang seems to be able to preserve the thematic system, the poetic effect, or the style of the original in his translation. This study aims to find out the translation strategies used by the translator to translate cultural specific items in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The sources of the data are taken from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and its translation. The research procedure consists of reading the whole text, identifying cultural specific items, and analyzing the translation strategies used by the translator to translate cultural specific items. The study results show that the translator used four main strategies to translate cultural specific items, namely loan words, loan words plus explanation, additional information, and generic words. Applied translation studies provide a wider room for collaborations between translation study and other disciplines. The collaboration of translation study with literature study, especially theatrology, result in the theatrical translation study as a branch of applied translation studies. This paper examines the theatrical translation of Putu Wijaya’s Bila Malam Bertambah Malam (BMBM) as translated into Javanese by Aslam Kussatyo. Galur (GLR), the theatrical translation of BMBM, serves as the object of this study. By applying the theatrical translation strategy, introduced by Susan Bassnett (1991) and covering cuts, adding, and adding with modifications, the writer tries to reveal translation strategies in the translation. The results of the study prove that--during the first phase of translation-- the translator applied a new strategy of theatrical translation (never before exposed by Bassnett) namely cuts with modifications. This strategy is traceable through the analyses of acculturation, gestic text, playtext, and speakability dimensions. While in the second stage of translation, the translators (director and stage crews) applied the strategy of adding with modifications in terms of performability and subtext dimensions. This article attempts to investigate the shifts in translating the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence in M.C. Ricklefs’ book entitled A History of Modern Indonesia since c.1200. This descriptive qualitative research uses Catford’s translation shifts and Vinay and Darbelnet’s taxonomy of translation shifts as the theoretical groundwork in identifying the shifts and then analyzing their impact on the translation of the Proclamation text. After comparing the original and Ricklefs’ translation, this research finds16 shifts out of 19 pairs of units of translation including modulation, level shift, class shift or transposition, unit or rank shift, structural shift, equivalence, and adaptation. These shifts lead to a slight change in the text’s formality. Research in translation shifts is potentially biased since there are no clear-cut boundaries of units of translation. As this article uses units of translation at the word and phrase levels, further research can be conducted by considering more complex units. Translating culture-bound expressions always poses a challenge for a translator, especially when the target culture does not share the same concept or expresses the concept in a different way. The translator needs to possess both sufficient knowledge about the source culture and skills in conveying the same concept in the target language by taking account of the text’s demand and target readers’ needs. This paper focuses on an English expression at the third point on the table taken from Chapter 2 of Philippa Gregory’s novel The Other Boleyn Girl to be translated into Indonesian. This expression is problematic because Indonesian does not have a special expression to represent the culture-bound concept conveyed by the original English expression. Linguistic analysis demonstrates that literal transtation would only produce a meaningless rendering in Indonesian. Sociocultural analysis demonstrates that the English expression refers to a specific seating position at a Western (European) formal dinner. Based on this information, a number of alternative renderings can be generated by means of paraphrase. Contextual analysis of the novel’s plot generates one relevant rendering, which is “di sebelah kanan Wolsey” (“on Wolsey’s right side”) based on several considerations. Although this rendering is more readily understandable by Indonesian readers, several losses are inevitable, such as the cultural color and ceremonial connotation imparted by the original expression. This simple case analysis shows that a translator may have to deal with culture-bound expressions which have to be rewritten or paraphrased using a new set of words whose literal meaning differs significantly from that of the constituent words of the original expression in order to make it meaningful to the target readers. Contextual adjustments are also needed to construct a rendering which is relevant to the text’s demand. Keywords: cultural translation, table manners, paraphrase, context

This research tries to investigate how the word silaturahmi is explained in English in The Jakarta Post, a daily English language newspaper. The word silaturahmi is originally an Arabic word that has been borrowed by the Indonesian Language. By using 17 sentences containing the word silaturahmi taken from the online version of the Jakarta Post as sources of data, this research adopts a qualitative descriptive analysis to find out how the word is explained in English in the newspaper. The analysis is then compared with the meanings of silaturahmi according to the Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language (KBBI). The result of this research shows that there are five explanations of the word silaturahmi found on the Jakarta Post as opposed to two explanations according to the KBBI.
