Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics provides many resources for translation studies. Some translation scholars even explicitly suggested SFL approach to develop their theories. One of SFL key features which can be applied to measure translation quality is thematic structure. This is possible because a good text should be composed of cohesive clauses (Eggins, 1994; Emilia, 2011). While theme has widely become topics in research on translations from other languages into English, it is still rarely explored in bahasa Indonesia-English translation. Using Eggins’ (2004) model of thematic progression, the authors explored how this feature was used in two English versions of Indonesian short story Jalan Lain ke Roma. Through the analysis and the comparison of thematic progression in source text and the two target texts, the authors attempted to show which text is better based on the thematic choices. The result of this study shows that although there is not significant difference between the two versions, the text titled Another Road to Rome is better at cohesion than the other titled Another Way to Rome. Keywords: Systemic Functional Linguistics, thematic structure, thematic progression, translation quality

Abstract

The development of the foreign-oriented manufacturing industrial sector in Indonesia brings consequences to the increase of the need for translation services. It eventually has consequences to the need of standardization of translators and standardization of translation services which have not been available. This study aims to discuss the standardization of interpreting and translation services abroad which can be used as a reference for standardizing translation services in Indonesia, as well as how Indonesia significantly requires standardization of interpreters and translators. This study adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach. The data collection technique is study of document using content analysis. The results of the study show that foreign countries, particularly developed ones such as the United States and some European Union countries have standardized their translation services in order to improve the quality of translation and the quality of services of translation-service providers. In addition, standardization of translation in Indonesia is necessarily needed in order to give benefits for translation service providers to be able to provide good quality translation and standardized services. In other words, standardization is highly required to provide a benchmark and guidance regarding the translation services and products. Keywords: standardization, translation services, interpreter and translator.

Abstract

The process of converting words from one language to another is known as translation. It holds a considerable part in almost every element of human life. Considering its increasing importance, the quality of the translated result must be improved. In reality, translation errors are often committed by translators. This research aims to determine the types of errors and the causes. The researchers conducted content analysis research and evaluated various studies on translation errors and their causes to obtain the data. The researchers found that translators' primary types of errors are grammatical, lexical, syntactic, and faithfulness errors. The causes of errors that the researchers found are the translator's lack of understanding of the target language's structure. Besides, culturally-bound words contributed as one of the causes of a translation error. Keywords: translation, error types, and error causes

Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine the use of translation strategies to translate robotics terms in Big Hero 6 – Hiro to the Rescue novel from English to Indonesian. The aim is to find out what strategies the translator mostly uses to translate robotics terms. This research uses qualitative method where the result of research with this method is strongly influenced by the views, thoughts, and knowledge possessed by the researcher. Through the research, from seventeen translation strategies, the translator uses seven translation strategies to translate robotics terms in the novel. Those translation strategies are: (1) transposition 15 times or (46%), (2) naturalization 5 times or (15%), (3) literal 4 times or (12%), (4) modulation 4 times (12%), (5) reduction 1 times (3%), (6) descriptive equivalent 2 times or (6%), and (7) transfer 2 time (6%). Therefore, more that 50% robotics terms are translated by using transposition strategy. It is inferred that there are some changing position of words and phrases from English to Indonesian so that the translator must find the most equivalent translation by finding the nearest style in TT. Keywords: novel, robotics terms, translation strategy

Abstract

This research discusses transformation of social inclusion-based library services in Indonesia printed mass media through the use of vocabulary and grammar. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using the discourse analysis method of Roger Fowler, et al. The results of this study reveal that there are reality construction processes built through the use of vocabulary and grammar, namely in the use of vocabulary there has been a classification process, a discourse battle process, and vocabulary as a form of marginalization. In addition, through the use of grammar, the perpetrator is removed as an effect of using the passive form and nominalization. This research suggests that the National Library of Indonesia needs to pay attention to the use of vocabulary and grammar as a means of enhancing the role of the National Library in society. In addition, it is necessary to increase the role of librarians in various activities and programs carried out by libraries, including the transformation programs of social inclusion-based library services. Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of Israeli and Palestinian Geopolitical vocabulary in the translation of Israeli and Palestinian tension news in Al-Jazeera Arabic news in 2021 because Al-Jazeera is one of the most popular news sites as a representation of Middle Eastern and Western media. This study is qualitative research with a geopolitical approach and free translation theory. The data for this article are five Al-Jazeera news texts about Israeli and Palestinian tensions. The secondary data of this research are relevant Indonesian news such as from tribun news, liputan6.com, tempo.co, sindonews, kumparan.com, republika.co.id, BBC Indonesia, detik.com, hidayatullah.com, kontan.co.id, kompas, CNBC Indonesia, net news, and merdeka.com. This study found the meaning of geopolitical vocabulary that is important for a translator to know, such as ُُتا َض َوا ُُي ِل ْيِئا َر ْس ِ ْلْاُ َف ُملا 'negotiation', ُُي ِل َو ُّدلا ُ ُش ْي َجلا ‘Israel Defense Forces (IDF)’, ا ُُيِ ن ْي ِط ْس َل ِفلا ُي ِل ْيِئا ِ ْلْا ُ ُعا َر ْس َ ْلْا ُ ن ْم ُس ِل ْج َم ‘UN security council’,ُ َفا َه َلاُُ ‘Lehava’, ُُ ب ْي ِ ب َ ُ ْلَ ت 'Tel Aviv', and ر ِ صلا 'Israel Palestine conflict'. The translation of Al-Jazeera's texts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be supported by geopolitical knowledge between the two countries. The better the geopolitical understanding, the better the translation quality. Keywords: Al-Jazeera News, Geopolitics, Translation, Conflict, Israel and Palestine.

Abstract

Translation can be viewed as a mode of (re)narration as it actively contributes to constructing the worldrather than simply functioning as a mechanism for transferring meaning from one language to another. This study delves into the role of paratext in reframing or (re)constructing various narratives concerning a translated work, Stuart Robson’s The Wedhatama, and highlights how the translator has strategically taken advantage of those paratextual elements to reinterpret the Javanese literary work and to promote his ideological viewpoints. By applying Baker’s social narrative approach, this study identifies that Robson presented personal reflections in his translation and shed light on the personal narrative of the ambiguous authorship of Serat Wedhatama[1]; public narratives presenting some clues might have provided its author with inspiration or impulse to write, under the glory of the Mangkunegaran, stories related to the governments, which flourished under the capable leadership of Mangkunegara IV, and stories about challenging the existing meta-narratives: Panembahan Senapati versus The Prophet, and kejawen versus pure Islam. Finally, Robson presented conceptual narratives, stating that the original work of Serat Wedhatama conveys a profound sense of cultural identity of the noble class. The paratextual elements present in the translation can assist target readers in understanding the translation and enhance the wider cultural narratives, thus playing an active role in the meaning-making process. Serat Wedhatama is believed as a prominent Javanese poetic work known for its ethical and philosophical teachings, especially concerning the concept of divinity and the importance of character education

Abstract

This study aims to examine the accuracy of instant translation of Netspeak since the Google translate system has inevitably replaced the human translator. This study investigated two aspects, namely (1) the types of slang words that are commonly posted by the most popular English-speaking Instagram celebrities, and (2) the translation shift of the translated posts from English into Indonesian using Google Translate app. Halliday’s transitivity process and Baker’s translation strategies are used as theoretical framework to obtain the data. This study employed qualitative approach using content analysis. The data were obtained from popular Instagram posts on 5 themes: culinary, fashion, lifestyle, mental health, and tourism. Clauses from the posts that contain slang words were classified based on the relationship among participants, process, and circumstance. The result showed that Google translate can be used as a supporting instrument in the translation process. Nevertheless, the human translators are required in the last stage to convey a closer meaning to the source text.
