Abstract

Understanding how women's economic, educational, and social positions influence their roles and choices within households is crucial for promoting gender equality and sustainable development. Despite significant advancements in women's rights and gender equality globally, women in Indonesia continue to face substantial barriers in achieving true empowerment. These barriers are particularly evident in domestic settings, where traditional gender roles often persist, limiting women's influence in household decisions. This research aims to investigate the relationship between women's socioeconomic status and their empowerment in domestic decision-making, examining how various factors such as income, education, and employment status contribute to or hinder their ability to influence family and household matters. This study performed a probit regression analysis using pooled cross-sectional data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave 5 (2007 and 2014) to examine the impact of women’s socioeconomic factors on the likelihood of women being empowered in domestic decision-making. Decision-making criteria included in this study concern decisions regarding spending for food consumption, daily needs and sanitation, tertiary household equipment, cash transfers to parents/relatives, and household saving. The results indicate that being employed and having higher levels of education significantly increase the probability of women having a say in household decisions. Conversely, lower socioeconomic status is strongly associated with reduced decision-making power for women. This study concludes with policy recommendations aimed at enhancing women's socioeconomic status and promoting gender-equitable decision-making within households.

Abstract

This study analyzes the determinants of early childhood well-being in female-headed households in Indonesia using data from the 2022 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), covering 85,074 households with children aged 0–5 years. Using binary logistic regression, the analysis focuses on four key indicators: complete immunization, food adequacy, access to improved sanitation, and access to safe drinking water. The results show that children in female-headed households are significantly less likely to receive adequate and diverse food as well as complete immunization, compared to those in male-headed households. However, these households are more likely to provide access to improved sanitation and safe drinking water. Other influential factors include the household head’s education, home ownership, internet access, and residential location. The findings highlight that the gender of the household head plays a crucial role in shaping child well-being. Accordingly, gender-responsive policies are essential to address the structural vulnerabilities of female-headed households, by enhancing economic capacity, improving access to gender-sensitive services, and implementing targeted, data-driven interventions. Additionally, families, especially those led by women, are encouraged to strengthen their literacy in child health and nutrition and to utilize public services that support the fulfillment of children's basic rights.

Abstract

Food security is a crucial issue for sustainable development and is highly influenced by multidimensional poverty. This study measures food security and multidimensional poverty in Kalimantan Island, analyzes the determinants of household food security through a multilevel approach, and explores the influence of multidimensional poverty and regional context on food security. Data were obtained from the March 2022 National Socio-Economic Survey, comprising 33,201 households and integrated with district-level characteristics. Multidimensional poverty was measured using the Alkire-Foster method, while food security was measured based on energy consumption and the proportion of food expenditure. A multilevel ordinal logistic regression was employed to examine both household and regional determinants. The results showed that 46.6% of households were food secure, while the rest were either vulnerable or food insecure. Household head education, saving ownership, and internet access significantly increased the likelihood of food security, while households with more than four members and multidimensional poor have a higher risk of food insecurity. At the regional level, agricultural villages and poor road conditions exhibited negative correlation with food security. Based on these findings, policies are recommended to strengthen food security through multidimensional poverty alleviation, green economic development, and infrastructure enhancement of regions that support the IKN.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of maternal employment status and job type on children's literacy skills in Indonesia, using data from the 2023 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) and a binary logistic regression approach. The results show that working mothers, particularly those in the formal sector, are positively and significantly correlated with children's literacy, especially in non-poor households. These findings highlight the important role of maternal employment contribution in strengthening educational investment within families. In contrast, among poor households, formal employment of mothers does not significantly influence children's literacy, indicating that economic constraints remain a major barrier. In addition, child-specific factors such as gender, household economic status, and geographic location, also affect literacy outcomes; girls, children from non-poor households, and those living in Java tend to have higher literacy levels. The policy implications suggest the need to promote maternal economic empowerment by expanding inclusive access to employment through skills training, flexible job opportunities, and entrepreneurial support tailored to the needs of women as primary caregivers. Furthermore, gender-responsive educational interventions and strengthened educational support for poor households and underdeveloped regions are crucial to ensure equitable and inclusive literacy development nationwide.

Abstract

Working poverty remains a persistent issue in Indonesia. The high prevalence of working poor underscores the urgent need for effective poverty alleviation efforts. This study analyzes the relationship between side hustles, excessive working hours, and working poverty in Indonesia. Utilizing microdata from the March 2023 Susenas and applying binary logistic regression, the study assesses the effect of side hustle status and excessive working hours on the likelihood of being categorized as working poor, based on the international working poverty line. The results indicate that engaging in a side hustle without excessive hours actually increases the risk of working poverty, while side hustles with excessive working hours reduce that risk. These findings suggest that side hustles are only effective in alleviating poverty when performed with excessive hours, a condition that may further exacerbate worker vulnerability. This study implies the need for policies focused on improving job quality, regulating working hours, and providing social protection for individuals engaged in side hustles.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of unpaid parental caregiving on employment status and formal sector employment opportunities in Indonesia, using panel data from the 2007 and 2014 waves of the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS). Propensity Score Matching (PSM) was applied to mitigate selection bias and estimate the Average Treatment effect on the Treated (ATT) for three caregiver categories: temporary, recent, and continuous. Results indicate that, after controlling for baseline characteristics, none of the caregiver categories significantly affected the probability of being employed or employed in the formal sector in 2014. The findings suggest that caregiving practices in Indonesia generally do not lead to labor market withdrawal but instead prompt adjustments in working hours or shifts to informal employment. Policy implications include the need for affordable and flexible care support services and strengthened protection for informal workers.
