Journal of Geography, Regional Planning and Development is an open-access peer-review research journal with major features of science and research. The journal publishes original research, reviews, case analysis and other material on all aspects of geography and regional planning studies. This platform serves as a platform for critical academics and spatial development professionals to share cutting-edge research. It publishes original contributions focusing on the multiple ways in which spatial development is coordinated, governed, and institutionalized at various scales, places and territories. The journal is located within the subject area of Social Sciences and predominantly linked to the subject categories of Spatial Planning and Development, Urban Studies, and Geography. Nonetheless, based on the journal’s multidisciplinary outlook, JGRPD welcomes contributions from other fields if they explicitly contribute to research on European spatial development. Abstract

Objective: This study examines the critical role of the transport system in fostering regional integration in Central Asia, a historically significant region with complex geopolitical and economic challenges. Method: The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a review of historical trade routes, policy analysis, and economic data to assess the impact of transportation infrastructure on regional connectivity. Results: Findings indicate that the development of transport systems has significantly enhanced trade, economic cooperation, and political stability among Central Asian nations. Improved infrastructure, such as railways, highways, and logistics hubs, has facilitated cross-border movement, reduced transaction costs, and strengthened economic ties with global markets. Novelty: Unlike previous studies that focus on individual country dynamics, this research provides a comprehensive regional perspective, highlighting how integrated transport networks serve as a catalyst for economic growth and geopolitical stability. The study underscores the need for sustainable and coordinated transport policies to maximize the benefits of regional integration in Central Asia.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the socio-psychological characteristics of communication within the student community, focusing on the dynamics that influence interpersonal interactions and their implications for academic and professional success. Method: A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing structured interviews and observational techniques to gather data from a diverse sample of university students across various academic disciplines. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify recurring patterns and significant factors in communication behaviors. Results: The findings reveal that communication effectiveness in the student community is significantly shaped by psychological traits such as empathy, self-esteem, and adaptability, alongside environmental factors like peer support and academic pressure. Barriers to communication were linked to social anxiety, lack of feedback, and cultural diversity. Moreover, students who developed adaptive communication strategies demonstrated higher levels of personal growth and academic achievement. Novelty: This research offers a comprehensive socio-psychological perspective on student communication, emphasizing the interrelation between communication skills and educational success. It contributes original insights by integrating personal development with communication theory, proposing targeted strategies to foster effective interpersonal communication in academic settings.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the implementation of an Integrated Library System through the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) at SMK Negeri 1 Sidoarjo, with a specific focus on the SMALDIVA Library. The research seeks to evaluate how OPAC enhances information retrieval for students and identify challenges in its practical application. Method: A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing data collection techniques such as field observation, semi-structured interviews with library staff and students, and documentation analysis. The study also reviewed supporting institutional records related to library services and system usage. Results: The findings indicate that OPAC has significantly improved the ease and speed of information access for students. However, notable challenges include limited user understanding of OPAC functionality and a shortage of library personnel with professional training in library and information science. These issues have hindered the system’s full potential. Novelty: This research provides one of the first focused assessments of OPAC implementation in a vocational high school setting in Sidoarjo. It highlights the need for systematic user training and professional development for library staff as critical components for optimizing digital library services in secondary education environments.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the school administration service system at SMAN 1 Krembung in responding to the demands and challenges of the digital era. The research focuses on identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for development in the implementation of digital administrative practices within the school environment. Method: A mixed methods approach was utilized, combining both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Data were collected through structured interviews with administrative staff and school leaders, observations of administrative workflows, and surveys distributed to staff and stakeholders. The integration of these methods allowed for a comprehensive analysis of administrative practices and perceptions. Results: The findings reveal that SMAN 1 Krembung has begun to implement several digital technologies to support its administrative processes. However, a notable gap remains between the desired efficiency and the actual performance of the system. Key challenges include insufficient digital infrastructure, limited staff digital competencies, and a lack of system integration across different administrative units. Novelty: This study offers one of the few in-depth evaluations of school administration service systems in an Indonesian public high school context during the digital transformation era. It contributes practical recommendations for improving administrative service quality, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure upgrades, targeted staff training, and the development of an integrated administrative system to support educational management in the digital age.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of human resources in enhancing the performance of library employees at SMK Negeri 2 Buduran, Sidoarjo Regency. The research focuses on understanding how human resource competence, technological support, and organizational context contribute to the quality of library services in the digital era. Method: A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with library staff and school management, participant observations of library activities, and analysis of relevant documentation. These methods provided an in-depth understanding of the dynamics influencing employee performance in the library setting. Results: The findings show that the performance of library employees is significantly influenced by three interrelated factors: the competence of human resources, the use of technology (such as automation systems), and contextual elements including leadership support and employee motivation. These factors collectively determine the ability of the library to meet the evolving needs of users. Novelty: This study provides a focused assessment of how human resource effectiveness shapes library performance in a vocational high school environment. It highlights the importance of investing in staff development, optimizing digital tools, and fostering institutional support to create responsive and efficient library services aligned with the demands of the digital age.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the impact of nature-based educational programs on students’ environmental awareness, emotional connection to nature, and pro-environmental behavior, addressing the growing disconnect between youth and the natural environment in formal education systems. Method: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining surveys and participatory observation of middle and high school students engaged in a semester-long outdoor immersion curriculum. Results: The findings indicate a significant enhancement in students' ecological awareness, emotional attachment to nature, and motivation to participate in environmentally responsible actions. Experiential learning and structured reflection activities were identified as key components in fostering these outcomes. Novelty: This research contributes to the field of environmental pedagogy by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of direct, sustained interaction with natural environments within educational contexts. It offers practical implications for curriculum development and educational policy by demonstrating how immersive, nature-based learning experiences can cultivate environmental stewardship among students.

Abstract

Objective: This study explores the ecological and economic implications of fallen leaf recycling in Tashkent, a major urban center in Central Asia with over 254 million trees. The research aims to identify sustainable waste management practices tailored to the city's environmental context. Method: A descriptive-analytical approach was employed, involving estimations of leaf volume, literature review of recycling technologies, and evaluation of potential ecological and economic benefits. Calculations were made to determine the annual volume of fallen leaves, and technological alternatives such as composting, biogas plants, and mulching were assessed. Results: Findings indicate that approximately 254 billion leaves fall annually in Tashkent, creating a significant waste management challenge. Composting emerged as the most feasible solution due to its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. Biogas production offers energy potential but requires substantial investment, while mulching presents a low-cost alternative for urban landscaping. Novelty: The article provides a localized, data-driven framework for urban organic waste recycling in Central Asia, highlighting specific environmental and infrastructural constraints in Tashkent. It also integrates ecological impact analysis with economic feasibility, offering a comprehensive model for similar urban ecosystems.

Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach in enhancing geography education by fostering independent thinking, deepening theoretical knowledge, and strengthening practical skills among students. Method: A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving three stages of testing across schools in the Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Tashkent regions of Uzbekistan. Students were divided into experimental and control groups, with the experimental group taught using PBL strategies such as case studies and interactive tasks, while the control group received traditional instruction. Results: The findings reveal a 14.7% improvement in academic performance among students in the experimental group compared to the control group, demonstrating the effectiveness of the PBL approach in advancing educational outcomes. Novelty: This study provides empirical evidence supporting the integration of PBL in geography lessons within the context of Uzbekistan’s education system, offering a validated, innovative instructional model aimed at promoting analytical skills, self-directed learning, and academic achievement in secondary education.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the presence and concentration of specific radioactive and chemical elements in the soils of the Urgut district and assess their potential impact on human health. Method: A field and laboratory approach was employed, involving soil sample collection from key locations followed by spectral analysis, mass spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence to determine the levels of dysprosium, erbium, neodymium, and strontium. Results: The findings reveal that concentrations of these elements vary across different geographical areas, with strontium showing particularly high levels in certain regions, potentially posing health risks through soil exposure and food chain contamination. Dysprosium and erbium were found at relatively uniform but concerning levels across foothill and plain areas. Novelty: This research contributes a novel perspective by linking geochemical soil characteristics directly with public health implications in a specific and underexplored region, offering critical insights for regional ecological assessments and the development of localized health safety interventions.

Abstract

Objective: This article examines the challenges and opportunities involved in revitalizing the Great Silk Road within the geopolitical context of Central Asia, focusing on its potential to enhance regional connectivity, economic development, and cultural exchange. Method: Employing a qualitative historical and geopolitical analysis, the study synthesizes archival records, policy documents, and international cooperation initiatives, such as UNESCO programs and the TRACECA corridor, to assess the strategic significance of Silk Road restoration. Results: Findings reveal that despite Central Asia’s central role in the historic Silk Road network, modern geopolitical constraints—especially limited access to global maritime routes—impede regional integration. However, recent infrastructure projects, including the Tejen-Serahs-Mashhad railway and the Andijan-Kashgar route, alongside coordinated multilateral efforts, demonstrate practical steps toward reinvigorating trade and diplomacy. Novelty: The article contributes a comprehensive, multi-dimensional perspective by bridging historical insights with contemporary political developments, highlighting Uzbekistan’s pivotal role in connecting continents through strategic policy and infrastructure. This integrated approach advances understanding of the Silk Road’s revival as a catalyst for international tourism, regional cooperation, and global trade, offering valuable implications for scholars and policymakers engaged in Central Asian geopolitics and economic strategy.
