SAWERIGADING is a journal aiming to publish literary studies researches, either Indonesian, local, or foreign literatures. All articles in SAWERIGADING have passed reviewing process by peer reviewers and edited by editors. SAWERIGADING is published by Balai Bahasa Sulawesi Selatan twice times a year, in June and December. SAWERIGADING focuses on publishing research articles and current issues related to language, literature, and the instructor. The main objective of SAWERIGADING is to provide a platform for scholars, academics, lecturers, and researchers to share contemporary thoughts in their fields. The editor has reviewed all published articles. SAWERIGADING accepts submissions of original articles that have not been published elsewhere nor being considered or processed for publication anywhere, and demonstrate no plagiarism whatsoever. The prerequisites, standards, and format of the manuscript are listed in the author guidelines and templates. Any accepted manuscript will be reviewed by at least two referees. Authors are free of charge throughout the whole process, including article submission, review and editing process, and publication.

Abstract

Anthropology of literature is one of literary analysis that discusses the relationship between literature and culture focused on how the literature is used in daily life as guide of conduct in society. Anthropology of literature is to describe the structure of literature (novel, short story, poetry, drama, folklore) and to relate the concept or social cultural context. Method used in the research is directed to enthnographic aspects or cultural society, society’s mindset, inheritage cultural tradition from time to time and still done. Data obtained is analyzed and explained descriptively. The aim and result intended to gain are descriptions of anthropology aspect, whether religion, myth, law, or tradition found in Datu museng dan Maipa Deapati.

Abstract

Mystery of the kinship of languages in the archipelago is still being evaluated by linguists of Comparative Linguistics. This paper aimed to explore Torajanese language trace kinship in Kaili using Comparative Linguistics point of view or what commonly called Comparative Historical Linguistics based on Grimm (Grimm’s law) and Verner’s theory. In particular, this study aimed to find out how far footprint of Torajanese language in Kaili language and when the two languages separate from its proto language. Torajanese language and Kaili were chosen because of the results of previous study that claimed Kaili languages in Central Sulawesi was Torajanese language (West Toraja). The method used in this paper is lexicostatistics by comparing 200 Swadesh basic vocabulary of Kaili and Toraja. This study found that Torajanese and Kaili are different languages with kinship percentage rate of 42.5 %. This percentage is derived from the discovery of 85 cognate words between Kaili Toraja, through comparisons of both vowel sound changes, sound changes consonant, the addition of sound/syllable and removal of noise. Lexicostatistics analysis of the results obtained of these two languages were separated in 17 BC.

Abstract

The writing aims at describing the form of polite communication on case study of mass media language in Makassar including Fajar, Tribun, and Cakrawala. Method used is descriptive qualitative with noting technique. Result of analysis shows that speech contained in the mass media is in two forms of communication, impolite and polite communication. The form of impolite communication is marked by: a) critic is conveyed directly, b) there is emotional drive when speaking, c) the speaker is protective towards his opinion, d) The speaker corners the speaker partner, and e) the spesker accuses the speaker partner based on suspicious; whilst the form of polite communication could be identified by: a) the speaker speaks properly, b) the speaker emphasizes on main topic conveyed, c) the speaker always has good prejudice to speaker partner, d) the speaker is opened and conveys critic in general.

Abstract

The Buru tetralogy consists of Bumi Manusia, Anak Semua Bangsa, Jejak Langkah, and Rumah Kaca. The fourth novel has coherence and similarity of themes, namely the domination of indigenous resistance Java feudalism (priyayi) and Dutch colonial, indigenous colonial antiracism culture and the birth of Indies culture (East and West). The objective of this research is to describe 1) the discourse of the blending of Eastern and Western cultures orientalism; 2) representation of Indigenous and Colonial as a consequence of the relationship between the colonized and the colonizers by using the post-colonial theory. The method of this research is the qualitative-interpretation-understanding (verstehen-hermeneutic-qualitative). The Cue of the power relations between East and West is characterized by the interaction of Western and Eastern cultures, known as the seven cultural universal. Meanwhile, repression between colonized and colonizer is revealed on exclusion and racial disparities felt by Natives in European society. Therefore, Orientalism as a reference to identify on the East, as the Indonesian identity has weaknesses, advantages, strangeness, and exotic causing the East is unmatched.

Abstract

Vernacular is uncodified language or unstandardized type of language which is used in daily conversation of informal situation. The purpose of this writing is to explain the forms of vernacular expression in AmericanEnglish in 12 Years A Slave which the script is written by John Ridley and directed by Steve McQueen. The movie is interesting to be observed because the dialogues in this movie consist of non-formal statements and deviated syntax. The vernacular expression discussed in this research is grammatical vernacular and lexical vernacular. The writer uses library research method by reading literatures related to vernacular language. The data obtained in this writing is dialogues in 12 Year A Slave. The writer transcripts spoken conversation from movie into written conversation then describes every situation happened in every dialogue. The vernacular expressions grammatically and lexically in the dialogues are mostly infringe the rules of English grammar. The grammar deviations appear grammatically, such as the deviation of copula be, the vanishing of copula be, the using of multi-negation, the vanishing of subject, the vanishing of auxiliary verb do in interrogative sentence, the deviation of auxiliary verbs do, the vanishing of be and the shortening of going to, and the vanishing of auxiliary verbs have. Meanwhile, the lexically deviations are variant of copula be + not, gunna as variant of going to, cain’t as a variant of the can + not, the linking sound, shortening of the word element, and a variety of lexical variation.

Abstract

Local tradition especially poetry needs to analyze since it becomes the part of local culture that is inherited from generation to generation based on its need. The existence of literary work not only change in the form since it is transferred by oral but also in its frequency usage over the time along cultural tradition movement happens, finally it is scattered and forgotten. Magic poetry (spell) is oral tradition which is still found in the society even though its existence is only known by certain people. The writing is intended to find out the kind, meaning, and form of spell (pangissengeng). Method used is descriptive qualitative with inventory and listening technique. Result of the research is the spell implying mystic power that could influence others or the speller himself. The spell functions as philtre (cenningrara), silencer (paggerak), affirmative (parimbolog), and healer (pajjappi).

Abstract

Gonggang ri Sadoqkoq is one of Torajanese oral tradition that is important to preserve. Applying descriptive method using Vladimir Propp theory that analyzes character function, scheme and pattern of the story, and the way the characters are introcuded uncover the uniqueness and the exclusivity owned by the oral tradition mentioned. Character functions found in Gonggang ri Sadoqkoq are nine functions and three spheres of action. The nine functions involve two willingness pattern, namely having wife that could accompany Gonggang and having descendant in order to make the overwhelming wealth owned by him could be bequathed. Apparently, there is deux ex machine character then have much influence the function in structure. The function is not mentioned in thirty one functions mentioned by Vladimir Propp.

Abstract

The Indonesian language usage of community and certain age could be the second language, whilst local language could be the first or mother tongue. Indonesian language could be influenced by the first language. It causes the phonological variation in pronouncing certain words that is not suitable with Indonesian language grammar. Method applied to find out the phonological variation used by Makassar language community in speaking Indonesian is descriptive qualitative method by listening-noting technique. It is used to describe Indonesian language phonological variation on Makassarese speakers community. Data obtained by the speech of researched object, based on result of data analysis is sound alteration, sound omission, and sound addition.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to know language situation of Mosso language in household domain and language choice by the Mosso speakers in the domain. The research uses quantitative method and applies sociolinguistic approach. Result of research shows that elder people are still active using Mosso language in household domain. It is shown by its effect to the younger. Even though the youngers are able to speak Indonesian language, they are fluent and prefer to speak in Mosso language. In addition, based on anava, the research shows the influence of age in relation to language chosen by the speaker, yet, it is not really significant.

Abstract

The research aims at describing affixes that form the verbs of Panasuan language. It uses descriptive qualitative method with techniques of collecting data by elicitation, recording, and noting. Result of research shows that derivational verbs of Panasuan languages determine its part of speech when they are embedded with basic verbs, while derivations are embedded with noun and adjective. Morphophonemic process only happens on prefix affixation.
