Abstract

The writer translated 6,933 words from the novel. There are 81 problems that were grouped into 3 categories namely problems in understanding, transferring, and understanding and transferring. There are 27 problems in understanding, 37 problems in transferring, and 17 problems in understanding and transferring. There are 25 sentences containing problems analyzed. The writer used Baker’s translation strategies to solve those problems. The result revealed that not all of the translation strategies were used for analysis. From 8 strategies, there are 7 translation strategies used namely translation by a more general word (4 problems), translation by a more neutral/less expressive word (1 problem), translation by cultural substitution (1 problems), translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation (3 problems), translation by paraphrase using related words (11 problems), translation by paraphrase using unrelated words (6 data), and translation by omission (1 data). The strategy of translation by illustration was not used in the analysis.

Abstract

Most video advertisements used certain linguistic styles and persuasive techniques in order to attract and persuade audiences. Unfortunately, not all makeup and skincare video advertisements use linguistic styles and persuasive techniques appropriately. Thus, the researcher decided to study the use of linguistic styles and persuasive techniques in successful makeup and skincare video advertisements. Therefore, the data sources used in this research were the advertisements of L’Oreal Paris and Rare Beauty (as the makeup video advertisements) and of Nivea, and Curology (as the skincare video advertisements). The research design used is case study which is a form of qualitative research. This study attempted to investigate what persuasive techniques are used in the makeup and skincare video advertisements. Based on the result analysis, the researcher found that familiar language, simple vocabulary, imperative, and present tense were the most frequently used in makeup and skincare video advertisement. Then, the persuasive techniques used in makeup and skincare video advertisements were pathos as the most frequently used, and ethos and logos as the least frequently used.

Abstract

This project is a design and development research. The objects of the research are Candi Jago and Candi Kidal. The purposes of this research are (1) to develop bilingual descriptions of Candi Jago and Candi Kidal as integrated in a QR-Code supported by a virtual tour guide application; (2) to give appropriate solutions to the problems. In conducting this design and development research, the stages are analysis, design, development, expert validation, and evaluation. The result of the research is QR-Code that contains bilingual descriptions of Candi Jago and Candi Kidal. The problem in this research was solved by providing the virtual tour guide applications for tourists who go to the object attractions without tour guides.

Abstract

This study presents an annotated translation, elucidating the translator's rationale for selecting specific meanings. The data originates from Marchella FP's novel, "Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini." The research addresses translation challenges and remedies for writer-translators. The objectives are: (1) unveiling issues encountered in source text translation, and (2) proposing solutions for the identified novel challenges. The researcher employs footnotes and comments during the annotated translation, comprehensively analyzing problems using encoding methods for words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and other translation-related issues. Two chapters are translated, yielding 20 problem instances, each elucidated through relevant strategies. The translation employs varied techniques, primarily synonyms and additions. Overcoming obstacles relies on established translation theories, methods, and procedures. The writer navigates translation tool limitations, consulting dictionaries and search engines, like Google. Rigorous research ensures faithful conveyance of meaning to the target audience.

Abstract

Museum Gubug Wayang stands as the sole museum in Mojokerto City, boasting an array of collections ranging from Wayang and Traditional Heirloom to Si Unyil's Puppet, Artefact Mojopahit, and Batik Nusantara. The museum attracts a diverse range of visitors, including both local and international tourists. However, an issue arose as the collections' labels were exclusively printed in Indonesian, posing difficulties for foreign tourists to comprehend the displays effectively. To address this, the museum sought to develop bilingual labelling in both Indonesian and English for their collections.  The research adopted a qualitative approach, utilizing the DDR (Design and Development Research) method, with Museum Gubug Wayang Mojokerto serving as the setting. The study successfully resulted in bilingual labels placed beneath the museum's collections. Respondents confirmed that these labels were easy to comprehend and greatly aided them in obtaining information about the exhibits at the museum.

Abstract

Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan Malang, a potential home to a tourist magnet in Malang, is an tourismt asset that has not been marketed well. Unfortunately, the local administration and inhabitants have not fully tapped into the area’s prospective revenue streams. The number of visitors is still low. A bilingual guidebook is one of the solutions to improve the number. Based on this background, the objective of the research was to create a bilingual guidebook for Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan Malang to improve visitors’ experience.The researcher employed research and development paradigm and used Borg and Gall’s developmental framework to craft a bilingual guidebook (in both Indonesian and English) for Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan Malang. Expert evaluations revealed favourable outcomes. Subsequent field trials confirmed the guidebook’s utility, affirming its capacity to improve visitor experiences and provided comprehensive locale-related information.

Abstract

This article focuses on learning situations in an ESP classroom at a university. Having taught heterogeneous learners, the researcher found that many students still experience low learning achievement in writing lessons. Therefore, the researcher needs new ideas to prepare her students for a more meaningful writing experiences in classroom. I believe that adapting both product and process approach through collaborative writing tasks is one way to overcome the problem. To explain my arguments briefly, I would firstly describe the ESP course learner’s situation. Then, I will address the problem by reviewing some literature related to writing approaches in which I believe could help. Lastly, I will put the literature and implement it to my context. It is expected that having collaborative writing by using product-process approach can help my students experience a good learning experience with peers. Abstract

This study analyzes the language used in BTS' digital marketing strategies, specifically in their social media posts and advertisements. A corpus of 120 social media posts and advertisements was compiled. A qualitative method was used to examine language use. In addition, the theory that is used is a theory from Martin Joos. Results show that BTS' digital marketing strategies utilize a range of linguistic devices and digital marketing strategies to connect with their audience and promote their brand. Additionally, the study identified patterns of language between Instagram and Twitter platforms. This study also provides insights into the language strategies used by BTS in their digital marketing, which can inform the development of effective digital marketing strategies for other brands targeting similar audiences. As a result, the researchers found that the most used language style in BTS' digital marketing strategies is the consultative style, which accounted for 62.5% of the analyzed posts. The company utilizes this style to provide advice, product information, and promote events, aiming to establish a helpful and trustworthy relationship with their audience. Additionally, the casual language style was observed in 37.5% of the posts, creating a friendly and approachable tone that resonates with BTS' youthful image.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the perceptions of 25 English for Tourism Industry students at the State Polytechnic of Malang on using ChatGPT as a speaking partner in tour guide role-plays. The research aimed to evaluate its effectiveness in improving fluency, vocabulary, and confidence, while noting challenges such as speech recognition errors, limited response variety, and technical issues. Data were gathered through Likert-scale questionnaires and open-ended responses and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that students valued ChatGPT for vocabulary enrichment and fluency practice, though it was seen as a complement rather than a substitute for human interaction. The study highlighted the potential of integrating AI into Tourism English curricula while calling for enhanced feedback and conversational realism.

Abstract

This study follows up students' perception to threaded online discussions from private university in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. This study was conducted on a sample space of 45 undergraduate Civil Engineering students who were all aged between 18 to 24 years. The participants included 13 females and 32 and they were then broken out into six groups to read the material and discussed in in the threaded online discussion through ProBoard platform. It employed a mixed-method approach and the interaction level were examined based on Thomas’ framework. Six students were interviewed in Bahasa Indonesia using semi-structured interviews to ensure that responses are clear. Interviews and questionnaires showed that 13 students experienced technical problems on the online platform. The atmosphere and communication matters played significant roles in eliciting unfavourable perceptions of the students in terms of online discussion. A follow-on examination indicates that in general, students do not like threaded discussions. However, the study also indicated that there is potential for online discussion to be used in language learning setting.
