Abstract

This study aims to analyze the clustering system of the Rammang-Rammang tourism area and to evaluate the roles, collaboration, challenges, and opportunities among stakeholders in supporting sustainable destination management. The research employs a qualitative approach that combines interviews with tourists, local communities, and village managers with direct field observations of facilities and activities. The findings indicate that the clustering system in Rammang-Rammang has naturally developed into several zones, including riverboat tourism, karst caves, village-based tourism, and culinary areas, each of which is interrelated and contributes to the identity of the destination. Tourists perceive the natural attractions as highly unique, yet they also note limitations in facilities and infrastructure. The interviews further reveal that local communities play a central role as guides and service providers, while village authorities coordinate governance and the government provides infrastructure support. Collaboration among stakeholders has been positive but remains hindered by weak coordination, limited funding, and low environmental awareness among some visitors. Nevertheless, opportunities for development are significant, particularly in strengthening local economic activities, adopting digital-based promotion, and integrating conservation into tourism services. The study concludes that clustering not only strengthens destination identity but also promotes more effective stakeholder collaboration and supports sustainable tourism practices. Recommendations include improving communication among stakeholders, establishing sustainable financing mechanisms, and adopting a stronger conservation-based approach to tourism management.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the role of local community organizations in the development of Passimaranu Tourism Village in Sinjai Regency, Indonesia. Building on a community-based tourism framework, the study explores how organizations such as Pokdarwis mobilize local resources, preserve cultural heritage, and promote sustainable tourism practices. Using a qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and document analysis, the research findings reveal that these organizations serve as key facilitators in managing tourism activities, coordinating stakeholder collaboration, and ensuring inclusive community participation. The results of the author's literature review indicate that local institutions play a significant role in the tourism sector. These institutions can increase community participation in tourist villages, develop the local economy, and foster sustainable social development. The author's recommendation is that local institutions can enhance their efforts by collaborating with the government to develop infrastructure, promote tourism practices internationally, and expand tourism education in secondary schools. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze promotional strategies that should be applied to tourism products at Pantai Biru, identify the factors that support the increase in tourist visits, and develop recommendations for integrated and sustainable promotional strategies. This research uses a qualitative method with data collected through observation and interviews involving tourism managers, local business actors, and tourists as informants. The findings show that the promotional strategies implemented so far are still limited to the use of simple social media, word-of-mouth promotion, and occasional entertainment events organized at the beach area. The main supporting factors for the increase in tourist visits include the natural beauty of Pantai Biru with its clear seawater, relatively easy accessibility from downtown Makassar, and the involvement of the local community in providing facilities and tourism services. However, the study also found several obstacles in the implementation of promotional activities, including limited funding, lack of innovation in digital content creation, and the absence of an integrated marketing strategy. Based on these findings, this study recommends strengthening the branding of Pantai Biru as a more competitive tourism destination, optimizing the use of digital media with creative and interactive content, and developing multi-stakeholder collaboration that involves local communities, managers, and tourism business actors. In addition, the principle of sustainability needs to be integrated into every promotional activity so that the development of tourism is not only oriented toward increasing the number of visitors but also maintaining the preservation of the coastal environment and improving the welfare of local communities. This research is expected to provide practical contributions for managers and tourism business actors in designing more effective promotional strategies, while also serving as a reference for the development of sustainable tourism in Makassar. In the future, the findings of this study may also serve as a consideration for further research on promotional strategies in other destinations with similar characteristics, so that the results are not only beneficial locally but also relevant in the context of national tourism development. Such strategies will strengthen the long-term competitiveness of Pantai Biru.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of sustainable tourism principles in small island destinations, using Samalona Island in Makassar as a case study. The focus of the research is to understand the dynamics of environmentally friendly tourism management while simultaneously providing socio-economic benefits to the local community. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques through interviews, field observations, and documentation. Thematic analysis was conducted to describe stakeholder involvement, forms of community participation, and the challenges and opportunities faced in developing sustainable tourism. The results indicate that Samalona Island has significant marine tourism potential, but is also vulnerable to marine ecosystem damage due to increasing tourist numbers and limited environmental carrying capacity. The government plays a role in providing basic policies and infrastructure, local communities contribute through community-based tourism management, businesses strengthen the tourism and culinary services sectors, academics support with research and mentoring, and the media plays a role in destination promotion. The level of collaboration among stakeholders has been quite good, although obstacles remain, such as limited funding, a lack of environmental awareness among some tourists, and weak coordination between parties. The main challenges identified include the threat of ecosystem degradation, potential conflicts of interest between stakeholders, and a lack of regulations regarding tourist visit capacity. However, significant opportunities also exist, such as strengthening the local economy through culinary and ecotourism businesses, increasing human resource capacity through training, and utilizing digital technology for environmental promotion and monitoring. Based on these findings, the study recommends strategies such as strengthening cross-sector collaboration using the pentahelix model, increasing tourist awareness of environmental sustainability, and implementing visitor capacity regulations. If these strategies are consistently implemented, Samalona Island has the potential to become a model for developing sustainable small island tourism destinations in Indonesia, capable of preserving the environment while improving the welfare of local communities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the experiences of students in the Convention and Event Management Study Program in organizing events at the Makassar Tourism Polytechnic. The primary focus of the study is to identify the obstacles and challenges faced by students during the planning, coordination, and implementation of events, as well as the strategies they employ to overcome these obstacles, ensuring the events run smoothly and achieve their intended goals. The method employed is a qualitative approach, involving data collection through in-depth interviews and participatory observation of students actively involved in the event committee, conducted in 2025. The study's results reveal that the main obstacles faced by students include limited funds as a source of financing, difficulties in finding sponsors to support activities, ineffective communication and coordination among committee members, and suboptimal time management in preparing for events. To overcome these problems, students implemented various strategies, including careful and structured planning, creating detailed work timelines, holding regular coordination meetings, utilizing digital communication groups such as WhatsApp to facilitate coordination, and distributing tasks clearly and organized. The evaluation of the event's implementation was conducted comprehensively, involving the entire committee and supervising lecturers. This study recommends strengthening training and improving event management competencies in the academic curriculum, increasing the active role of lecturers and practitioners in mentoring and evaluation, and developing an event management information system to support the effectiveness and efficiency of event management. In conclusion, the success of events organized by students greatly depends on the mastery of structured managerial skills and synergistic collaboration between various related parties. The practical experience gained from organizing these events not only improves students' professional competencies but also contributes positively to the sustainable development of local tourism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of social media as a promotional tool to enhance the attractiveness of Akkarena Beach, located in Makassar City. Digital promotion through social media has become a crucial strategy in strengthening destination branding and attracting tourists, especially in the era of rapidly evolving information technology. The research focuses on the effectiveness of social media in delivering tourism information, the types of content that most appeal to audiences, and the most influential platforms in promoting Akkarena Beach. Despite its natural beauty and available tourism facilities, Akkarena Beach still faces challenges such as the lack of a targeted promotional strategy, limited involvement of local stakeholders in digital content creation, and outdated online information. This study uses a qualitative case study approach, employing observation, interviews, and content analysis of social media related to the destination. Data were analyzed using a SWOT approach to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in utilizing social media as a promotional medium. The findings show that key strengths include the beach’s scenic appeal, accessibility, and strong visual potential for digital content, while weaknesses involve inconsistent content and low participation from local actors. Opportunities arise from the growing trend of visual-based tourism promotion and government support for digitalization programs, while threats include competition from other destinations that are more active on social media. The study concludes that creative, collaborative, and sustainable promotional strategies are essential in leveraging social media to improve the visibility and competitiveness of Akkarena Beach as a leading beach tourism destination.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the existing conditions of Akkarenna Beach as a coastal tourist attraction, to examine the forms of the Clean Tourism Movement (CTM) activities at Akkarenna Beach, and to assess its impact on both visitors and managers. The research method employed a SWOT analysis approach (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) as suggested by Adrian et al. (2021). Primary data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, while secondary data were obtained from official reports and documents related to destination management. The findings reveal that Akkarenna Beach has significant potential to be developed as a sustainable tourism destination. Its key strengths include community-based management, relatively adequate facilities, and consistent environmental education programs. On the other hand, identified weaknesses include limited cleanliness monitoring systems, insufficient waste management facilities, and low levels of active tourist participation in environmental preservation. The implementation of CTM at Akkarenna Beach is realized through regular beach clean-up activities, socialization of reducing single-use plastics, and collaboration with environmental communities. These activities have had a positive impact on increasing visitor awareness of the importance of cleanliness, building a positive image of the destination, and strengthening the managers’ capacity to create environmentally friendly tourism. Moreover, the involvement of local communities in these activities reinforces the social dimension and expands multi-stakeholder collaboration networks. Future development strategies of CTM are directed toward strengthening synergy among government, private sector, academia, communities, and tourists. These efforts are supported by improvements in waste management infrastructure, the development of education programs based on sustainable tourism, and innovations in eco-friendly tourism products. With a holistic and participatory approach, Akkarenna Beach has the potential to become a model of community-based tourism destination that integrates environmental, social, and economic aspects in a balanced way to realize tourism sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze management and digitalization in two significant museums in Makassar City, namely Museum La Galigo and Museum Mandala, using a comparative study approach. Data at Museum La Galigo was collected through direct observation and recording of visitor activities to examine the implementation of digital technology in service processes and the delivery of information to visitors. Meanwhile, the focus at Museum Mandala was on analyzing the content and utilization of various digital media, including websites, social media, and videos as promotional and educational tools capable of reaching a wider audience. The results show that Museum La Galigo emphasizes internal digitalization, particularly for data archiving and visitor education efforts. However, several main challenges were identified, related to inadequate technological facilities and limited capacity of human resources proficient in digital technology. On the other hand, Museum Mandala is more active in utilizing external digital platforms to expand reach and enhance interaction with visitors and the general public. Overall, the digitalization implementation in both museums has a significant positive effect in improving visitor experience and supporting more effective cultural information management. Nonetheless, this study found an essential need for increasing human resource capacity and more comprehensive technology integration to ensure optimal and sustainable digitalization. The study recommends enhancing collaboration among relevant parties, developing technological infrastructure in museums, and providing technology-based management training to support more adaptive and modern museum management. It is expected that this study can serve as a valuable reference for digitalization development in other museums in Makassar City and beyond.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges and opportunities in the management of culinary tourism at Losari Beach, as well as its contribution to the local economy. In addition, the study analyzes effective promotion strategies to enhance the appeal of culinary tourism at Losari Beach in supporting sustainable tourism development in Makassar. This research applies a qualitative method with data collected through direct field observations, documentation as supporting material, and interviews involving tourism managers, local business actors, and visitors as informants. This approach provides a comprehensive picture of how culinary tourism functions not only as a cultural expression but also as a driver of the local economy. The findings reveal that current promotional strategies remain limited, relying mainly on simple social media usage, word-of-mouth, and user-generated content on platforms such as TikTok that occasionally go viral. Although these approaches can increase public awareness, they are inconsistent and unsustainable in reaching a wider audience. Furthermore, several challenges persist, including inconsistency in service quality, hygiene issues, waste management problems, and the presence of street performers, beggars, and people soliciting money in the tourism area. Their presence often causes discomfort among visitors and negatively impacts the overall image of the destination. These conditions highlight the need for more structured promotion strategies and stronger collaboration among stakeholders. Nevertheless, the opportunities for developing culinary tourism at Losari Beach remain significant. Iconic dishes such as pisang epe, complemented by other popular street foods like es pisang ijo, grilled meatballs, and roasted corn, enrich the visitor experience. These culinary offerings not only preserve local food traditions but also contribute to economic activity by supporting small-scale vendors. The strategic location of Losari Beach on the seafront further enhances its appeal, allowing tourists to enjoy dining experiences with a beautiful sunset view. With well-designed promotional strategies, improved service quality, and solutions to existing social challenges, Losari Beach has great potential to strengthen its position as one of Indonesia’s leading culinary tourism destinations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of community involvement on Samalona Island in the management and development of Community-Based Tourism (CBT), encompassing aspects of participation from planning to implementation of tourism activities. Furthermore, this study also aims to identify tourist perceptions of service quality, attractions, and the active role of local communities in supporting tourism management on Samalona Island. The research method used a qualitative approach through direct interviews with tourism managers and tourists, as well as field observations. The research results show that the Samalona Island community is directly involved in various aspects of tourism, such as providing homestays, boat transportation services, marine tourism packages, and additional activities like banana boat rides and beach cleanliness. This involvement demonstrates a spirit of mutual cooperation, although challenges remain, particularly in the management of waste, which is not well-organized due to minimal government support. Other obstacles faced by the community include damage to facilities due to the rainy season and limited formal training to improve service capacity. Nevertheless, the community continues to strive to maintain the sustainability of tourism through simple initiatives such as beach cleanups and collaboration with students conducting environmental conservation programs. This role demonstrates that the community is not only a service provider, but also a key driver in maintaining tourist attractions. From a tourist perspective, perceptions of Samalona Island are quite positive. Tourists consider the services provided by the community adequate, marine tourism attractions such as snorkeling, diving, and the beauty of the beaches very attractive, and the friendly attitude of the community adds value to the travel experience. Tourists also see the role of the local community as crucial in improving the quality of visits and creating an authentic tourism atmosphere. This study concludes that the implementation of CBT on Samalona Island has been quite successful because the community is the main actor in tourism management. However, sustainable tourism development requires further support, particularly in terms of environmental management, community capacity building, active government involvement, and more targeted tourism promotion strategies to attract domestic and international tourists.
