Abstract

The hospitality industry demands professional, skilled, and adaptive human resources to meet guest needs. Vocational education in the hospitality sector needs to emphasize industry-based practical learning to prepare students to face the world of work. One method that can be used is housekeeping drilling skills, a repetition-based training that emphasizes consistency, speed, and precision in housekeeping skills. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the housekeeping drilling method in increasing the adaptability of the Room and Hospitality Management Division Study Program students who study Housekeeping courses at the Makassar Tourism Polytechnic. The research uses a qualitative approach with the research location at the Makassar Tourism Polytechnic, one of the vocational universities under the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia. Over six months, data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observation of students who participated in housekeeping practices (April-September 2025). The analysis was conducted descriptively to understand students' experiences, perceptions, and challenges in drilling housekeeping skills. The study results show that the housekeeping drilling method improves technical skills, discipline, and students' adaptability to the dynamic hospitality work environment. Repetitive exercises strengthen the motor aspect and cognitive understanding related to industry operational standards. This study contributes to the development of a vocational curriculum. It enhances the synergy between educational institutions and the hospitality industry in producing more ready-to-use, competent, and adaptive graduates.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of English blended learning in enhancing nutrition awareness among nursing students within the context of health tourism education in Bali. With the growing demand for healthcare professionals who are both linguistically competent and nutritionally literate, this research investigates how a hybrid approach to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) can simultaneously improve language skills and health education outcomes. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, analyzing essay responses from 14 nursing students at STIKES Bina Usada Bali through thematic content analysis. The findings reveal three major themes: (1) the perceived importance of English proficiency in accessing global nutrition knowledge and patient communication, (2) challenges in traditional language learning methods, including limited speaking practice and contextual relevance, and (3) strong student support for blended learning models combining online modules with interactive classroom sessions. Students emphasized that integrating nutrition topics into English instruction increased their engagement and awareness of dietary health, particularly in serving international health tourists. The study concludes that blended learning is a viable and effective strategy for achieving dual educational goals, language development, and nutrition literacy. It recommends the development of a structured ESP curriculum focused on health tourism, incorporating asynchronous video lessons, real-world case studies, and peer discussions. This approach aligns with national education affirmations and supports the cultivation of globally competent nursing graduates ready for Bali’s evolving health and hospitality landscape.

Abstract

The Halmahera walking shark (Hemiscyllium halmahera) represents a unique marine species endemic to North Moluccas, Indonesia, with significant potential to become a focal point of sustainable marine tourism. This study explores the role of engaging nearby coastal populations in supporting the development of walking shark habitats as tourism assets. Data were obtained through community surveys and stakeholder interviews. Findings reveal that local communities demonstrate strong interest in marine tourism initiatives but require capacity-building in ecotourism practices, conservation awareness, and benefit-sharing mechanisms. Effective community engagement enhances stewardship of walking shark habitats, reduces the risk of unsustainable exploitation, and increases socio-economic resilience through alternative livelihoods such as guiding, homestays, and small-scale enterprises. The integration of community perspectives into tourism planning also fosters local ownership and long-term conservation commitment. The results emphasize that the success of marine tourism centered on the Halmahera walking shark depends not only on ecological suitability but also on the active participation and empowerment of nearby populations through inclusive management frameworks.

Abstract

Tondok Bakaru Village is a buffer village that borders Gandang Dewata National Park and is a tourist village that has been ranked among the top 50 in the 2022 ADWI (Awards for the Development of Tourism Villages). The sustainable and inclusive development of tourism in the buffer village of Tondok Bakaru is strategically necessary to maintain a balance between environmental conservation, community empowerment, and local economic growth. Methodologically, this study uses a descriptive quantitative approach with a Likert scale-based scoring analysis technique to measure and assess the level of implementation of inclusive tourism principles in the Tondok Bakaru Tourism Village. Scoring is applied to indicators in five dimensions of inclusivity: physical and environmental accessibility, socio-culture, economy, management and policy, and information and communication technology. The results of this assessment were then processed to determine the tourism village inclusiveness index. A qualitative approach is used in semi-structured interviews/focus groups with key stakeholders (local communities, tourism businesses, tourists, and vulnerable groups) and document review. The scope covers core attractions and supporting services in Tondok Bakaru Village, as well as governance arrangements and local enterprises. The objective is to establish a rigorous baseline for inclusive tourism implementation, identify principal constraints and enablers, and formulate actionable priorities that link inclusion with sustainability. The findings provide actionable evidence for village managers and policymakers to steer investments toward high-leverage improvements and measurable progress toward sustainable destination status.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of a culturally embedded augmented reality (AR) English book to enhance language engagement among gastronomy students in hospitality education. Conducted at Akademi Komunitas Manajemen Perhotelan Indonesia with 12 culinary students, the research employed classroom observations and qualitative interviews. The AR book was designed to merge local cultural contexts, particularly Balinese and Indonesian culinary traditions, with interactive language learning elements such as 3D food models, pronunciation guides, and gamified vocabulary quizzes. Findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ motivation, vocabulary retention, and speaking confidence, with 83% of participants reporting increased engagement compared to traditional materials. Qualitative data highlighted the effectiveness of cultural relevance and multisensory interaction in sustaining attention and deepening understanding. The study concludes that AR-enhanced materials can bridge the gap between language learning and professional culinary communication within tourism and hospitality education when grounded in local culture. It recommends the broader adoption of context-sensitive digital tools in vocational programs to support linguistic and cultural competency. This research contributes to the evolving landscape of technology-enhanced hospitality education, particularly within marine and cultural tourism domains where authentic, place-based learning is essential.

Abstract

Shark diving has emerged as one of the most significant forms of marine tourism worldwide, providing both economic opportunities and conservation challenges for coastal communities. This study examines a decade of shark diving tourism in Morotai, North Moluccas, Indonesia, focusing on its growth trajectory, ecological implications, and socio economic contributions. Data were collected from local tourism agencies, diver operators, and secondary records covering the period 2013–2025. The findings indicate that shark diving tourism in Morotai has expanded steadily, with an average annual increase in visitor numbers exceeding regional marine tourism growth rates. Economically, the activity has contributed substantially to local livelihoods through employment and revenue generation, while also stimulating small-scale businesses such as homestays and dive shops. However, challenges remain in terms of regulating diver shark interactions, ensuring ecosystem sustainability, and balancing conservation goals with tourism development. The case of Morotai illustrates the potential of shark-based ecotourism to foster sustainable blue economy initiatives in Indonesia, provided that appropriate management strategies, stakeholder engagement, and long-term monitoring frameworks are implemented.

Abstract

Aquaculture is a biological resource management activity aimed at meeting food needs, increasing community income, and conserving natural resources. Bulukumba Regency in South Sulawesi Province has significant potential in maritime tourism, with a coastal and marine area of 237.87 km² and a coastline of 128 km. However, the potential of these marine resources has not been optimally utilized as a leading tourism product. Currently, tourism activities in Bulukumba are still limited to conventional activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and diving, without considering the principles of sustainable tourism, which can actually increase negative impacts on the environment. This study aims to explore the possibility of integrating the concept of aquaculture as a leading sustainable tourism product in Bulukumba Regency and assess its suitability with local community activities and tourist behavior. The study used a case study method through observation and interviews. Observations were conducted on coastal community activities and tourist behavior, while interviews were used to explore potential collaboration between aquaculture and tourism activities. This study also reviewed government policies related to aquaculture and tourism management to assess their alignment. The research stages include preparation, data collection, analysis, interpretation of results, and report preparation. The research results indicate that aquaculture activities have the potential to be developed as an educational and conservation-based tourism product that can enrich the tourist experience while improving the well-being of coastal communities. Integrating aquaculture into the tourism sector could be a strategy for sustainable tourism development in Bulukumba. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for the local government in formulating policies and will be disseminated through publication in indexed national journals.

Abstract

Although the marine environment is not a human habitat, it is utilised for two purposes: economically, to fulfil food needs based on marine biota, and for tourism, where recreational activities are carried out. This means that the issue of marine environmental cleanliness is highly significant and crucial. With regard to recreational needs, we believe that front office staff and housekeepers play a major role in promoting marine environmental cleanliness, especially in meeting recreational needs, where the presence of rubbish or dirt is difficult to avoid, while cleanliness is a major factor in meeting recreational needs. Through an action research approach, we constructed a learning model that we hope can be incorporated into the hospitality education curriculum in order to promote marine environmental cleanliness. The participation of lecturers and students in the field of hospitality in conducting action research, the construction of knowledge about learning models where enculturation is related to the culture of cleanliness, and support for understanding the function of the marine environment and the impact of its damage, especially in Indonesia, are the main topics with the aim of shaping the role of front officers and housekeepers in promoting marine environmental cleanliness. The results of this study show that the formation of a culture of cleanliness occurs through an understanding of the concepts of dirt and cleanliness based on general views or understanding, which are therefore not based on personal judgement or understanding, and can thus be practised and accepted in a general context. This understanding is formed through enculturation that takes place in formal vocational education, where understanding of the function of and impact of damage to the marine environment is taught as a form of cognitive support, with the aim of realising a culture of cleanliness. The understanding that sustainability as a concept can only be realised through the active role of humans as actors in life leads us to view the significance of this study in the formation of a formal vocational education curriculum in the hospitality field. Therefore, we hope that the results of this study can be developed for the purpose of forming an action-based curriculum for front officers and housekeepers as agents in promoting marine environmental cleanliness.

Abstract

This paper breaks down what resilience really means and how it helps the destination bounce back from tough times. The research aims to identify the challenges and opportunities in managing cultural tourism at Fort Somba Opu, and to propose strategies for managing Fort Somba Opu from a resilience perspective. This research applies a qualitative method, with the study location being Fort Somba Opu, Gowa Regency, during the period of August-October 2025. The research results indicate that Fort Somba Opu faces various challenges, both between the managers and the community and between the managers and relevant government agencies. These challenges include limited basic and supporting tourism facilities, land use conflicts between the fort area and the local community due to the area's location being mixed with the community, a lack of income sources, and damaged traditional houses. Besides these challenges, Fort Somba Opu also has opportunities that allow it to develop further and survive in the long term, such as being a center for cultural festivals and activities related to culture, and having great potential for collaboration with the private sector to obtain development and expansion funds. The proposed strategy involves short, medium, and long-term approaches, allowing the destination to develop gradually by building a strong foundation at each stage before moving to the next level. The strategy includes: infrastructure improvements (accessibility and providing access for public transportation like busses to enter the fort area), adding facilities such as a Tourist Information Center, souvenir shops, more decent sanitation facilities, and a better lighting system, collaborating with the private sector to obtain development capital, developing innovative tourism packages, and government support by creating policies to separate the tourism area from public road access for the community. The above strategies are part of the Sombu Opu Fort's resilience perspective, applying the concept of resilience and requiring revitalization efforts to revive the fort tourism area amidst external challenges and changes. This research reinforces the urgency of resilience in cultural attractions to protect historical sites from significant threats. This research is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of an applicable resilience concept for the preservation and development of cultural destinations in Indonesia.
