Abstract

Fokus permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana dampak Perang Sunggal (1872–1895) dalam membentuk identitas sosial dan budaya masyarakat Sunggal. Kajian ini menelusuri transformasi struktur sosial, pergeseran nilai budaya, dan ekspresi resistensi terhadap kolonialisme Belanda dan elit lokal yang pro-kolonial. Penelitian ini membahas karakteristik perlawanan masyarakat adat Sunggal terhadap konsesi tanah oleh Kesultanan Deli kepada perusahaan tembakau Belanda serta bentuk-bentuk resistensi simbolik dan identitas kolektif yang muncul pascaperang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji proses pembentukan identitas sosial dan budaya masyarakat Sunggal sebagai dampak dari konflik kolonial. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode sejarah kualitatif dengan pendekatan interdisipliner. Teknik pengumpulan data terdiri dari empat macam, yaitu studi pustaka, dokumentasi, wawancara mendalam, dan observasi lapangan. Teknik wawancara dilakukan melalui wawancara semi-struktural dengan tokoh adat dan sejarawan lokal, sedangkan dokumentasi dilakukan dengan menganalisis arsip kolonial dan foto-foto sejarah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Perang Sunggal (1872–1895) merupakan peristiwa penting yang menandai perlawanan terhadap kolonialisme Belanda sekaligus menjadi tonggak pembentukan identitas sosial dan budaya masyarakat Sunggal. Perang ini muncul sebagai reaksi atas politik konsesi dan perampasan tanah adat oleh kolonial yang didukung elite komprador Kesultanan Deli. Dipimpin Badiuzzaman Surbakti, perlawanan tidak hanya bersifat teritorial, tetapi juga mempertahankan martabat, nilai-nilai, dan struktur sosial adat. Dampaknya bersifat multidimensional: secara politik mengakhiri otonomi lokal; secara sosial menyebabkan dislokasi dan perubahan struktur kekerabatan; secara ekonomi memunculkan proletarisasi; dan secara budaya memicu transformasi adat serta revitalisasi simbol identitas lokal. Identitas sosial masyarakat pascaperang dibentuk melalui dialektika antara dominasi kolonial dan memori kolektif.Penelitian ini sesuai dengan teori identitas budaya (Stuart Hall), resistensi simbolik (James C. Scott), identitas sosial (Henri Tajfel), serta teori konflik sosial (Karl Marx dan Lewis Coser) sebagai landasan teoritik dan sekaligus sebagai pisau kritik terhadap narasi hegemonik kolonial.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in English instruction within the Visual Communication Design (DKV) program at SMK Negeri 2 Gorontalo. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore the extent to which classroom practices align with ESP principles, particularly in terms of needs analysis, materials development, and assessment. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with one English teacher, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that instruction has begun to reflect contextual ESP principles through the integration of digital design projects and vocabulary relevant to the students’ field of study. However, the implementation remains adaptive in nature and is not yet grounded in a systematic and formal needs analysis. Gaps were also identified in the reinforcement of technical vocabulary, pronunciation development, and performance-based assessment. The study underscores the importance of industry-oriented needs analysis and authentic evaluation strategies to strengthen ESP implementation in vocational education.

Abstract

This study explores EFL learners’ perspectives on syntactic awareness in academic writing within an Indonesian higher education context. Although syntax is often taught as rule-based grammar, little attention has been given to how learners conceptualize and utilize syntactic awareness in their writing processes. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 undergraduate students in an English Education program who had completed Academic Writing and English Syntax courses. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that learners perceive syntactic awareness as conscious attention to sentence structure, a strategy for achieving academic complexity, an error-monitoring mechanism, a bridge between grammatical knowledge and writing practice, a cognitive challenge, a product of reflective practice, a source of writing confidence, and a meaning-making resource. The study concludes that syntactic awareness extends beyond grammatical knowledge and functions as a dynamic metalinguistic and metacognitive process supporting academic literacy development. These findings highlight the importance of integrating reflective syntactic engagement into EFL writing pedagogy.
