Abstract

The utilization of rice husk waste as an alternative bioenergy source is an innovative approach that has the potential to support environmentally friendly energy production while increasing the added value of agricultural waste. However, farmers' acceptance of this innovation is largely influenced by their perceptions of its characteristics. This study aimed to analyze farmers' responses to the innovation of utilizing rice husk as an alternative bioenergy source among members of the Sido Makmur Farmer Group in Ambopi Village, Tongauna Utara District, Konawe Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by simple quantitative data. All 17 members of the Sido Makmur Farmer Group were selected as informants using a census technique. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Farmers' responses were examined based on Rogers' five perceived characteristics of innovation, namely relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. The findings revealed that farmers showed positive responses toward the innovation of utilizing rice husk as an alternative bioenergy source. The innovation was perceived to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, enhance the utilization of rice husk waste that had previously been considered to have little economic value, and provide a more environmentally friendly alternative energy source. In terms of compatibility, the innovation was considered appropriate for the local economic, socio-cultural, and environmental conditions because it utilizes abundant locally available raw materials. The perceived complexity of the innovation was relatively low since the required tools and materials were readily available and the production process was simple, although farmers' age and heavy daily workloads remained constraints for some respondents. Furthermore, the innovation could be easily tested on a small scale, and its benefits were readily observable, thereby strengthening farmers' confidence in accepting the innovation. The study concludes that the perceived characteristics of innovation, including relative advantage, compatibility with farmers' needs, ease of understanding, trialability, and observability, are the primary factors that foster positive farmer responses toward the utilization of rice husk as an alternative bioenergy source and have the potential to accelerate the adoption of this innovation in rural communities.

Abstract

The distribution of subsidized fertilizers is a strategic government policy aimed at improving farmers' access to agricultural inputs and enhancing lowland rice productivity. The effectiveness of this policy depends not only on the efficiency of the distribution system but also on the proper utilization of fertilizers in accordance with recommended agricultural practices. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of subsidized fertilizer distribution based on the Six Right Principles and to describe its utilization in lowland rice farming in Bente and Rangka Villages, Kabawo District, Muna Regency. A quantitative approach employing a survey method was applied. A total of 56 farmers were selected using proportional random sampling from a population of 125 subsidized fertilizer recipients. Data were collected through structured interviews, field observations, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively using frequency distributions and percentages. This study offers a more comprehensive perspective by integrating the evaluation of subsidized fertilizer distribution based on the Six Right Principles with fertilizer utilization practices at the farm level. The results revealed that the implementation of subsidized fertilizer distribution successfully fulfilled five of the six indicators, namely the right place (85.71%), the right type (100%), the right price (78.57%), the right time (71.43%), and the right target (100%). However, the right quantity indicator remained relatively low (44.64%) because the allocated fertilizer was insufficient to meet farmers' actual needs. Regarding fertilizer utilization, all respondents applied the recommended types of fertilizers (Urea and NPK), while 69.64% applied the recommended fertilizer dosage and 76.79% applied fertilizers at the appropriate time. The insufficient quantity of subsidized fertilizers prompted some farmers to adjust fertilizer application rates, indicating that the effectiveness of fertilizer utilization was strongly influenced by the quality of the distribution system. Therefore, improving the effectiveness of the subsidized fertilizer policy requires refining allocation mechanisms based on site-specific fertilizer requirements, regularly updating the electronic Definitive Group Needs Plan (e-RDKK) database, and strengthening the role of agricultural extension workers in promoting balanced fertilization practices to enhance the productivity and sustainability of lowland rice farming.

Abstract

Communication is a fundamental component of agricultural extension, as it determines the effectiveness of information dissemination, innovation transfer, and technology adoption among farmers. However, communication processes in agricultural extension activities remain susceptible to various barriers that may reduce the effectiveness of extension services. This study aimed to analyze the communication barriers encountered by agricultural extension workers during rice farmer group extension activities in Awuliti Village, Konawe Regency, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design was employed. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, which was subsequently expanded through snowball sampling until data saturation was achieved. The study involved six informants, comprising one agricultural extension worker, one head of the farmers' association (Gapoktan), two farmer group leaders, and two farmer group members. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis process consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The analysis focused on five dimensions of communication barriers: technical, semantic, psychological, organizational, and socio-cultural barriers. The findings revealed that communication barriers experienced by agricultural extension workers were generally low. The primary barriers identified were technical in nature, including environmental noise, inadequate voice clarity during extension sessions, limited use of communication media, and interruptions during information delivery. Semantic barriers were relatively minimal because extension workers adapted their language to farmers' characteristics, simplified technical terminology, and provided clarification whenever necessary. In contrast, psychological, organizational, and socio-cultural barriers were not found to be significant due to open communication, harmonious interpersonal relationships, effective farmer group coordination, and the mutual ability of extension workers and farmers to build trust and adapt to local socio-cultural conditions. The findings suggest that improving the effectiveness of agricultural extension should prioritize strengthening the technical aspects of information delivery through adequate communication facilities and the creation of a conducive learning environment while maintaining high-quality interactions between agricultural extension workers and farmers.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the performance of farmers in managing lowland rice farming in Baruga Urban Village, Baruga District, Kendari City. The research was conducted from May to July 2025 in the same location. The study site was selected purposively, based on the fact that the area is a major center for lowland rice production in Kendari City. The study population consisted of all lowland rice farmers in the area, totaling 280 individuals. The sample size was set at 10% of the population, resulting in a sample of 28 lowland rice farmers, selected using simple random sampling. The data analysis employed in this study utilized descriptive statistics with class intervals to characterize the performance of farmers engaged in wetland rice cultivation. The results indicate that the farmers' performance in the study area falls into the "moderate" category. Specifically, the performance of wetland rice farmers in Baruga Urban Village, Baruga District, Kendari City, is classified as moderate. While these farmers have demonstrated good performance regarding the quantity and quality of their produce, as well as precision in managing and developing their farming operations, there is room for improvement to elevate their performance to an "excellent" level.
