Abstract

The waste problem in urban areas demands a sustainable management strategy that involves active community involvement. One emerging approach is community-based waste management through the existence of a waste bank. This study aims to analyze the application of development communication principles in supporting sustainable waste management at the Main Waste Bank (BSI) of Rumah Harapan Umat (Rumah Harum), Depok City. This study focuses on five main principles: sustainability, community participation, collaboration, two-way dialogue and communication, and empowerment. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies of waste management activities at BSI Rumah Harum. Data analysis focused on how development communication strategies were designed and implemented to encourage changes in community behavior in waste management. The results show that BSI Rumah Harum applies sustainability principles through circular economy education that adds value to waste. The principle of community participation is realized through active community involvement in waste sorting from the source, while the principle of collaboration is reflected in the synergy between BSI, local governments, and the private sector. In addition, the principle of dialogue and two-way communication is implemented through regular forums and the use of social media as a means of conveying customer aspirations. Meanwhile, the principle of empowerment is evident in the increased economic capacity and independence of communities through a waste savings system. This study concludes that the integration of these five development communication principles is a key factor in building a sustainable urban waste management ecosystem as a agen of changes.

Abstract

Agricultural extension plays a strategic role in empowering coffee farmers in Ataku Village, South Konawe Regency, through effective communication to improve their knowledge, skills, and productivity in coffee farming, which is still low despite its great potential. This study aims to determine the channels of agricultural extension communication in improving the knowledge of coffee farmers in Ataku Village, Andoolo District, South Konawe Regency. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive survey method that aims to systematically describe the extension communication channels and the level of knowledge of coffee farmers. The research population consists of all 150 coffee farmers in Ataku Village. The research sample was determined using simple random sampling, with the research sample set at 20% of the total population, or 30 people. The research variables included extension communication channels and coffee farmers' knowledge. The data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that agricultural extension communication channels played an important role in increasing the knowledge of coffee farmers in Ataku Village, Andoolo District, South Konawe Regency. Mass communication through a group approach was the most dominant channel, with print media (especially extension brochures) being the most effective medium because it was easy to understand and could be used as a continuous reference. Audiovisual media served as a complement that helped visualize technical information and encourage discussion, although its use was still relatively limited. The impact of using these communication channels is reflected in the change in farmers' knowledge, which is in the moderate category, with a high level of understanding, but the ability to apply and integrate knowledge in farming practices is still not optimal. The effectiveness of extension communication needs to be strengthened through media synergy and continuous assistance so that increased knowledge can encourage the application of coffee farming innovations more effectively and sustainably.

Abstract

The efficacy of agricultural extension programs in the Andoolo Subdistrict remains constrained by numerous challenges, including suboptimal program planning that does not adequately align with farmers' needs and regional potential. This suboptimal planning is attributable to limited competencies, the dynamics of extension tasks, and the phenomenon of extension workers changing professions. Consequently, the effectiveness of agricultural extension implementation at the field level is also diminished. The objective of this study is to ascertain the extent of the performance of agricultural extension workers in the development of programs in Andoolo Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency. The present study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a descriptive research design. The selection of informants was deliberate. The objective of this study is to assess the performance level of agricultural extension workers in the development of agricultural extension programs. The analysis was conducted in a descriptive manner, employing a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The findings indicate that the performance of agricultural extension workers in developing agricultural extension programs in Andoolo Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency, is satisfactory, with an average NPK score of 88.08. Extension workers have been able to carry out most of the stages of program development systematically, particularly in the stages of program refinement and approval, which reached the very good category. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement in the stages of determining activity plans and planning monitoring and evaluation methods. These methods should be more closely aligned with the objectives and problems faced by farmers.

Abstract

Rats have been identified as a significant threat to rice productivity in Indonesia, including in Sendang Mulya Sari Village in the Tongauna Subdistrict of Konawe Regency, a region that is a major producer of rice. The objective of this study is to analyze the manufacturing process, steps for use, characteristics of innovation, and effectiveness of the Anti-Rat Net as an alternative for controlling rats in rice fields. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through a purposive study in Sendang Mulya Sari Village, involving 18 informants who were purposively selected from 11 rice farming groups. The research concentrated on the methodologies for fabricating and utilizing the Anti-Rat Net, emphasizing its innovative attributes. The findings indicated that the Anti-Rat Net exhibited a substantial capacity to curtail the severity of rat pest incursions, accompanied by a notable capture success rate and a comparatively low operational cost efficiency when benchmarked against established methodologies. The Anti-Rat Net innovation is characterized by its adaptability to farmers' needs and ease of application. The present study corroborates the hypothesis that the Anti-Rat Net can function as an effective solution for sustainable rat pest control.

Abstract

Interpersonal communication is a critical component of the knowledge transfer process, particularly within the context of farming. In the agricultural sector, effective communication has been identified as a key factor in facilitating the transfer of knowledge from experienced farmers to their successors. This transfer is particularly important in the context of corn farming, where the dissemination of best practices is crucial for enhancing productivity and environmental sustainability. The challenge of fostering effective communication between farmers has led to a dearth of understanding regarding strategies for enhancing agricultural practices. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of interpersonal communication on the process of knowledge transfer regarding corn farming from older farmers to younger farmers in Umba Village, Napano Kusambi District, West Muna Regency. The present study employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a survey method. The research population comprised all 33 young farmers residing in Umba Village, and the sampling technique employed was a census. The data were collected through a variety of methods, including surveys, interviews, literature reviews, and documentation. The research variables were interpersonal communication and the process of corn farming knowledge transfer. The analysis was executed through the implementation of both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings indicated that interpersonal communication exerted a substantial influence on the efficacy of the transmission of corn farming knowledge between generations of farmers. The presence of openness, empathy, supportive attitudes, positive attitudes, and equality in social interactions fostered the exchange of experiential knowledge between older and younger farmers. Empirical analysis demonstrates that the efficacy of knowledge transfer processes is contingent upon the quality of interpersonal communication. These processes are most effective when communication is of a high caliber, which is evident in all stages of the knowledge transfer process, including initiation, involvement, rumination, and integration in corn farming. The transfer of knowledge in the agricultural sector is not purely technical in nature; rather, it is significantly influenced by the relational and social dimensions inherent in interactions between agricultural actors. Strengthening interpersonal communication between generations of farmers is a strategic element in efforts to regenerate farmers and ensure the sustainability of the corn farming system, and needs to be systematically integrated into the formulation of rural agricultural development policies and programs.

Abstract

The present study explores the untapped potential of developing cayenne pepper as a strategic horticultural commodity in Matabura Village, Amonggedo District, Konawe Regency. The analysis reveals that this potential has not been realized due to several constraints. First, farmers' knowledge, bargaining position, and technology utilization are inadequate. Second, the role of agricultural extension workers in supporting marketing and enhancing farmers' welfare is suboptimal. The objective of this study is to ascertain the role of agricultural extension workers, the market access of cayenne pepper farmers, and the relationship between the role of agricultural extension workers and the market access of cayenne pepper farmers in Matabura Village. The present study employs a quantitative approach, utilizing an explanatory survey design. The study population consists of all cayenne pepper farmers who actively participate in agricultural extension activities in Matabura Village, with a total of 26 individuals included in the study. The present study employed a census technique. The data collection process entailed the implementation of various methodologies, including surveys, interviews, and documentation. The research variables of interest were the role of agricultural extension workers and market access. Quantitative descriptive methods were used to analyze the data. The results demonstrated that the role of agricultural extension workers in Matabura Village was relatively effective and contributed significantly to improving the market access of cayenne pepper farmers. Extension workers have performed a variety of strategic functions, including roles as educators, information disseminators, motivators, and facilitators. These functions have included the provision of training, market and price information, marketing assistance, and the strengthening of business networks and partnerships. The market access of cayenne pepper farmers is also favorable, as evidenced by the availability of marketing facilities and cooperation with various parties. However, this is not yet universally experienced by all farmers. The correlation test results show a positive and strong relationship between the role of agricultural extension workers and farmers' market access (r = 0.770; p < 0.05), confirming that optimizing the role of extension workers is a key factor in expanding market access and improving farmers' bargaining position. Strengthening the capacity and institutional support of extension services needs to be continuously improved to encourage more sustainable agricultural marketing.

Abstract

The economic potential of ornamental plant farming in Kendari City is significant, given the rapid urban development and increasing market demand. However, the sector faces challenges related to production costs, business management, technology, and capital. The objective of this study is to analyze the practices and economic implications of ornamental plant farming in Kendari City. The research method employed is a survey method with a case study approach. The research population consists of all ornamental plant cultivation businesses in Kendari City, with a sample size of 25 people. The data was analyzed using a quantitative descriptive approach. The results indicate that the commercial cultivation of ornamental plants in Kendari City is economically viable and lucrative. In the context of horticultural enterprises, production costs are predominantly influenced by labor expenditures, particularly in the context of fertilization activities. This observation is indicative of the inherently labor-intensive nature of horticultural business operations. The age of the crop has been demonstrated to exert a substantial influence on revenue generation. Specifically, 4-month-old plants have been observed to yield higher revenue compared to 2-month-old plants, despite the extended production time associated with the former. The mean net income from ornamental plant farming is IDR 48,703,974 per cycle, or IDR 12,175,993 per month, indicating a high level of profitability. Ornamental plant farming possesses the potential to become a sustainable urban agribusiness in Kendari City.
