Abstract

Science education in junior high school continues to face difficulties in improving student learning outcomes, especially in physical and chemical changes topic. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the experimental learning method in improving student learning outcomes at SMP Negeri 3 Cikancung. The method used in this study is a quantitative approach with a One Group Pretest–Posttest design. Data were analysed using non-parametric statistical tests and N-Gain value calculations to measure the improvement in students' learning outcomes. The normality test showed that the data were not normally distributed, with a p-value of 0.000; therefore, the analysis was continued with the Wilcoxon test. The analysis results showed a significant difference between students' initial and final scores, with p = 0.000. The average final scores of the students increased, with a N-Gain percentage of 78.11%, which is considered high. This finding indicates that implementing experimental methods for the topic of physical and chemical changes is effective in improving students' learning outcomes. This research makes a significant contribution to the development of more innovative teaching methods in science education at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of elective English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in preparing beauty vocational students for participation in the global workforce. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research was conducted at SMKN 2 Selong, East Lombok, and involved 15 participants comprising students, teachers, and a curriculum coordinator. Data was gathered through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, and then analyzed thematically to identify patterns in instructional practices and stakeholder perceptions. The findings indicate that integrating beauty-specific English content into ESP instruction enhances students’ communicative competence, motivation, and confidence in professional contexts. The use of authentic materials such as product catalogs, salon manuals, and customer-service simulations was found to increase classroom engagement and support practical language use. However, the study also identified key challenges, including limited instructional resources, inadequate teacher training, and the lack of performance-based assessment. The study implies that ESP is essential for bridging language education and industry needs in vocational settings. To maximize its effectiveness, stronger institutional support, targeted teacher development, and collaboration with the beauty industry are recommended.

Abstract

Chemistry learning in senior high schools (SMA) is seen as abstract and theoretically oriented, making it less contextually meaningful for students. The integration of national values of patriotism and the use of local wisdom in science learning, especially chemistry, is still limited compared to social subjects. This study aims to examine the integration of local wisdom in chemistry learning on the colligative properties of solutions through the practice of making salted eggs (a traditional Indonesian food product) as an effort to foster patriotic character education. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with 34 students of grade XI as subjects. Data were obtained through a response questionnaire and analyzed descriptively in the form of percentages. The results of the study showed an increase in the attitude of patriotism through reflection on local wisdom-based chemistry learning, increasing students' awareness of the scientific and cultural value of local products, encouraging a commitment to be proud of innovating and developing local products that can improve the welfare of the Indonesian people, not just for consumption but also for cultural heritage that can be developed scientifically and economically. The integration of science and culture in this learning was able to increase student involvement in the learning process, facilitate the understanding of chemical concepts, and show the meeting point between understanding chemical concepts and strengthening the character of patriotism, and is in line with the Pancasila Student Profile and the principles of meaningful contextual learning.
