Abstract

Zakat, a pillar of the Islamic economic system, plays a vital role in sustainable development, particularly in Gorontalo Regency. Previous studies have largely focused on public interest in zakat, leaving its synergy with sustainable development—especially in economic and social dimensions—underexplored. This study examines the relationship between zakat and sustainable development, assessing its socio-economic impact. Using a descriptive and analytical approach, it explores zakat management and distribution while evaluating its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Findings indicate that zakat significantly contributes to poverty alleviation, education, and healthcare—three key SDG sectors. Economically, zakat functions as a wealth redistribution mechanism and a driver of local economic growth. Socially, it enhances community welfare and strengthens social cohesion. These impacts highlight zakat’s potential in advancing sustainable development. Further research is needed to explore innovative zakat management models that optimize its effectiveness and efficiency in achieving sustainable development goals.

Abstract

The problem of environmental damage is a global problem that must be addressed immediately for the survival of humans and other living things on earth. The best way to solve this problem is by switching to renewable energy (RE). However, this transition requires a high cost, so alternative financing is needed. Waqf can be alternative financing to fund RE. The most potential renewable energy is solar energy because it is relatively low installation costs, easy to install, and is suitable for tropical areas such as Indonesia. Some studies proposed the concept of energy financing, but none have proposed waqf as an alternative to energy financing, especially solar energy. This paper aims to determine the opportunities and challenges of waqf as an alternative to financing solar energy in Indonesia based on the practice. The research data were obtained from literature studies and in-depth interviews with energy waqf stakeholders in Indonesia. The results show that waqf has a great opportunity as an alternative for financing solar energy in Indonesia, but the biggest challenge is the lack of socialization and education on waqf and solar energy. This research can be used as a consideration for policymakers.

The method of data analysis used the analysis of the content on the messages received from the productive zakat. Zakat as a religious law, and a unique unity that combines educational functions with social purposes and economic realities require further study to discover more of its legislative secrets and to find out about its various miraculous aspects. One of the purposes of zakat legislation is to provide the necessary sufficiency to dispense with it, the person who is poor and in need, and for the Muzakki, he treats himself in a small way and distorts the instinct of ownership, so that he becomes accustomed in giving and spending for zakat. The attempt to remove usury without activating the zakat foundation leads to a fundamental flaw in the Islamic finance process, To regulate or at the level of practice making usury tricks it appears as a necessity that can not escape them, though, in fact, the problem does not only make matters worse.
