Abstract

This study has the purpose of deeply and critically analyzing the beauty myth standard, which is the major issue in the picture book entitled The Princess Who Wasn't that is mostly read by children. Beauty standards refer to the norms within a society that idealize specific physical traits and appearances. These standards may vary across different cultures and time periods, but they have a significant influence on an individual's self-perception and body image. With the fundamental theory of Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf in 1990, this study adopts a qualitative methodology as the approach. By analyzing the narrative and visual representation, the study explores how the picture book presents beauty standards and their potential impact on young readers. Furthermore, the study examines the storyline of a picture book to determine whether it focuses more on changing someone's appearance or on emphasizing the significance of inner beauty and individuality. Beauty is becoming an oppression for women in society. The standard of beauty in society makes it necessary for a woman to look pretty, wear a dress, and be a beautiful woman. This analysis deeply examines beauty myths in society, the standard of beauty, and a woman's right to be herself.

Abstract

In "Beauty" by American poet Tony Hoagland, the concept of beauty symbolizes women's beauty, which capitalists and the media construct to gain and make a profit. Using the Beauty Myth theory by Naomi Wolf as a guide, this study analyses the beauty standard portrayed in the poem. According to Wolf (1990), beauty is a myth that the media and the beauty industry have created to keep women in a state of constant self-doubt and insecurity. The result is that women are not aware of the many negative influences that they have on women, such as health, deception, excessive fantasy, and, most importantly, the exploitation of women as a result of these many factors. As a result of this negative influence, various criticisms are triggered. The purpose of this article is to examine the social forces that lie behind the existence of this poem from the perspective of a feminist.

Abstract

The study of literary philosophy is a relatively new field in Indonesia, though it cannot be said to be a completely new discipline globally. There is growing optimism that the philosophy of literature will attract significant interest due to its unique advantages and distinct focus. This field explores the intersection of philosophy and literature, encompassing both written and oral traditions. This intersection offers a rich area for exploration, both in the realm of ideas and the tangible world. Philosophy and literature both concern themselves with the human experience, examining relationships between individuals, the divine, nature, life, and various existential issues. As a new branch of its parent discipline, the "Philosophy of Literature" joins other specialized fields such as the philosophy of language, law, economics, politics, education, development, medicine, communication, culture, management, religion, and more. In the future, literature is likely to be increasingly studied as a philosophical subject, although some argue that philosophical values have always been inherent in literary works, making the relationship between philosophy and literature a form of 'acronym.' In the digital era, as modern humans become increasingly dependent on digital communication and information, both written and spoken languages continue to evolve. They now often appear on the screens of tablets, cellphones, laptops, computers, and televisions. The challenges and impacts of digital language are significant, affecting not only language and literature but also linguistic and literary philosophy..

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the issue of identity crisis in the graphic novel American Born Chinese (2006) by Gene Luen Yang. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, data were meticulously collected and analyzed through Erik Erikson's theory of the eight stages of psychosocial development, framed within a psychoanalytic approach. The primary focus is on the main character, Jin Wang, whose identity crisis becomes evident upon his transfer to a new school where he is surrounded by a predominantly American environment. This transition triggers a profound sense of dislocation and self-doubt, as Jin struggles to reconcile his Chinese heritage with the cultural expectations of his peers. His identity crisis is manifested through various attitudes and thoughts, such as his desire to fit in and his internalized shame about his ethnicity. These behaviors reflect Erikson's concept of identity versus role confusion, a pivotal stage in adolescent development where individuals grapple with their sense of self. The study's findings underscore the psychological turmoil faced by Jin as he navigates the complexities of his dual identity. This analysis highlights the broader implications of cultural assimilation and the challenges faced by immigrants in preserving their cultural identity while seeking acceptance in a new societal context

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze psychoanalytic issues, specifically post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as depicted in the graphic novel In the Shadow of No Towers (2002) by Art Spiegelman. The study utilizes a descriptive qualitative method to gather and interpret data from the text, focusing on how PTSD is portrayed. Data collection involved a detailed examination of the graphic novel, capturing how Spiegelman illustrates the trauma and psychological impact of the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks, which affected him personally. The analysis is guided by Cathy Charut's (1996) theory of post-trauma, which provides a framework for understanding how traumatic events are represented and processed. The results reveal that In the Shadow of No Towers vividly portrays PTSD through its narrative and visual elements, reflecting Spiegelman's own experiences and emotional responses to the attacks. The graphic novel's depiction of trauma is analyzed to show how it affects the author's psyche and how it manifests in his work. This study contributes to the understanding of trauma representation in graphic literature.

Abstract

The portrayal of female beauty in media often establishes rigid standards that influence societal perceptions of ideal physical characteristics. Women who do not conform to these ideals are frequently marginalized and treated unfairly. This research aims to explore the myth of the ideal female body as depicted in Disney's short film Reflect. Utilizing qualitative research and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, the study examines how beauty myths shape societal expectations. The findings reveal that societal standards of beauty—typically white, tall, and slim—are perpetuated through media representations. The film's protagonist strives to challenge these norms and redefine beauty standards within the ballet world.
