Abstract

This study aims to classify and explain the functions of illocutionary act used in the novel entitled The Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell. After being collected, the data is analyzed based on the theory of illocutionary act by George Yule (1996). The object of this study is the novel itself. This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. Based on the result, there are 68 items found in the novel, there are 21 directives, with the function such as suggesting, commanding, and requesting, 16 representatives, with the function such as stating, concluding, and describing, 16 expressive, with the function such as a statement of joy, anger, like, dislike, 8 commissive, with the function such as promising and refusing and 7 declarations, with the function declaring. The most dominant type of illocutionary act that is found is directives with 21 items or 30,88%, while the least type is declaration with 7 items or 10,29%. The directive act became the most dominant act in the last leaves falling novel due the main character is a teen who was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Keywords: Pragmatics, Speech act, Illocutionary acts, Qualitative method.

Abstract

This thesis is entitled “The Reflection of Inferiority Complex in The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur”. The topic of this study is the inferiority complex. The object for this thesis is a book of the poem by Rupi Kaur entitled The Sun and Her Flowers (2017). The book tells about the speaker’s life as an immigrant, about her family, love life, and society around her. The aim of this study is to analyze the speaker who suffer from an inferiority complex. In conducting this study, the writer used Alfred Adler’s theory in a book The Individual Psychology by Alfred Adler: A Systematic Presentation in Selection From His Writings (1956). And this thesis also used the qualitative method. The result showed that from the data analyzed it was found that the cause of the speaker’s inferiority complex is the bad memories from childhood and during she grows up. The symptoms the speaker shows include anxiety, sorrow, despair, insecurity, and weakness.Keywords: adler, inferiority, poetry, rupi kaur

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic landscape in Taman Safari Bogor tourist attractions. To analyze the researcher based on the findings found by Landry and Bourhis (1997). There are two problem formulations in this research, the first is the diversity of languages used in the linguistic landscape and the function of the linguistic landscape. This study uses a qualitative method. Qualitative methods are used by the writer to explain and interpret various kinds of signs, language and also the results of observations. The writer got 205 signs collected from observations in the outdoor and indoor areas of Taman Safari Bogor. The writer conducted interviews to find out the reasons for showing written signs at Taman Safari Bogor in various languages. The writer found several types of language used in the linguistic landscape such as monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual. The writer also found that there are 4 languages used such as Indonesian, English, Arabic, and Chinese. All signs are installed in the outdoor and indoor areas of Taman Safari Bogor as warnings and prohibitions, directions, promotions, and building names. Indonesian – English is dominant at Taman Safari Bogor. The reasons for displaying multiple languages are; educating local communities in foreign languages and facilitating information for overseas visitors.Keywords: linguistic landscape, sign, tourist attractions.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to find out the sign and the description of denotation, connotation, and myth meaning in the music video of Earth by Lil Dicky and Life Goes On by BTS. In analyzing both music videos, the writer used qualitative method and applied Barthes’ theory. The sign shows that the signs are denotation and connotation meaning. While, the denotation reflected in the music video Lil Dicky’s Earth music video is about life on the Earth, while in BTS’ Life Goes On music video is about life that must o on in a pandemic. The connotation reflected in the Lil Dicky’s Earth music video is about the life problems that we face the world, and BTS’ Life Goes On music video is about support to all people and the world which is not well. Lastly, the myth reflected in both of the music videos are about problems on Earth symbolized with the structure of circumstances and climate change.Keywords: Connotation, Denotation, Music Video, Semiotics

Abstract

The study aimed to describe the depiction of mourning and melancholia in the novel What to Say Next and to find out the causes of melancholia on character in What to Say Next novel. This study is entitled “Mourning and Melancholia in Julie Bauxbaum’s What to Say Next Novel”. The object of the study is novel by Julie Buxbaum. It described how someone developed mourning and melancholia after the loss of someone loved. This study is sought with qualitative methods in order to reveal the issue of the novel. This study applied the theory of mourning and melancholia by Sigmund Freud (1971). The result of the study should that the main character developed melancholia as portrayed by changed her behavior, aligned herself, blaming herself, having death wishes, and paralysis. It also found that the cause was that she developed melancholia because of the sudden death of her father and loss the family in which her parents were in the middle of divorce before the accident.Keyword: depression, melancholia, mourning, loss

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the things that can trigger bullying in an illustrated novel, especially children's literature. The object of this study is an illustrated novel entitled The Hundred dresses. This study uses a qualitative method that presents analysis in illustrations and writings. To guide this study, the perspective of Olweus (1993) is used which can support the bullying issue presented. The result of this study is to find differences in the characteristics of names that come from Poland and the quiet behavior of the main character that triggers bullying, in addition, low social class is marked by the condition of the house being small and remote, the main character actually claims about a hundred dresses.  It doesn't match her look through the faded blue dress she wears every day. The main character is also bullied for trying to make friends with a popular girl at school with an excessive approach so that the main character tries to overcome bullying by changing her appearance and attitude by being more friendly, proving about the hundred dresses she has by winning a drawing contest and transferring to another school more suited to her life.Keywords: illustrative elements, narrative elements, bullying, struggle.

Abstract

This study entitled “Ecological Awareness in Never Lonely Again Picture Book”. It represents how ecological awareness the main character portrays the way nature as a friend can occur. The data of this study were collected from a picture book entitled Never Lonely Again by Hans Wilhelm (1988). The qualitative approach was used to present and analyze the data. In analyzing the data (Issue of Nature as a Friend) theory from Cheryll Glotfelty (1996) was applied. The result of the study revealed that nature can be an influence in changing a good personality towards the main character. The personality change caused natural objects in the picture book such as flowers, sunshine, waterfall, mountain, etc. To complete the research, analysed the data based on the pictures and saw the changes in the characters at the beginning and end of the story.Keywords: Literature, ecological awareness, picture book

Abstract

This study entitled “English Blending Word Found in The Jakarta Post    E-Newspaper” presents the process of created the words by using blending process. This study also identified the types of blending word. The study methodology used in this study was the qualitative approach by analysing the data source taken from the                    e-newspaper. To analyse this study, theory from Naghmeh Mirzaie Hosseinzadeh (2014) used. The formed of blending word shows the creativity of human in creating of a word or language. Based on the analysis, it was found 19 data with 16 data of new blending clipping and 3 data of new blending with overlapping. The dominant types of blending word used are new blend with clipping: the first part of the first word is blending with the last part of the second word. Abstract

The title of this research is “Women Struggle Revealed In Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone: Positioning In Legal, Economy, and Social Fields”. The Great Alone novel by Kristin Hannah (2018) discusses the life of a female character, Lenora Allbright who can struggle with a different life than before. She is so patient to face the trials that are happening, the problem raised in this research is how is the issue of women struggle and how does the protagonist survive the problems of gender in legal, economy, and social fields in The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah (2018). The theory used in this research is existential feminism from Simone de Beauvoir (1949). The data analysis approach used by the researcher is descriptive qualitative. The result shows that there are kinds of struggle of women positioning gender in legal, economy, and social. Besides that, the protagonist survive the problems of gender in legal, economy, and social fields.            Keyword: descriptive qualitative, existential feminism, gender, and women struggle.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to identify types of implicature and identify the meaning found in Pirates of Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie. The writer used Grice (1975) theory of implicature and the classification, conversational and conventional implicature. Moreover, the writer used qualitative method to collect the data which are analyzed by using Grice theory. This study identifies the implicature used by the 8 casts. From the data analysis, it was found that there are 30 implicatures, there are 27 conversational and 3 conventional implicature. This study found more data from conversational implicature because 27 conversations are depending on the context of the conversation or meant by the speaker's utterance that is not part of what is explicitly stated, while 3 conversations that used conjunction implicates of what is being said conventionally or someone’s utterance that could change at another time.Keywords: Implicature, Pirates of Carribean, Types of Implicature
