Abstract

Background: Dental age estimation is possible due to stable morphological changes in teeth, particularly secondary dentin deposition. The Coronal Pulp Cavity Index (CPCI) assesses changes in coronal pulp size, but its use in the Indonesian population is limited. Objective: To compare dental age estimation of the mandibular first premolar and first molar using the CPCI method on panoramic radiographs and to review it from an Islamic perspective. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed 81 panoramic radiographs of patients aged 20–50 years. Dental age was estimated using the Tooth Coronal Index (TCI) and analyzed with linear regression and paired t-test. Results: TCI showed a significant correlation with chronological age in premolars (r = 0.657; R2 = 0.432) and molars (r = 0.664; R2 = 0.441) (p < 0.001). The first molar demonstrated a smaller age deviation than the first premolar. Conclusion: CPCI-based age estimation using the mandibular first molar is more accurate and consistent with Islamic principles of justice and maslahah.

Abstract

Background: Study model analysis is a tool to establish diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontics, one of the analyses is Pont and Howes analysis. Objective: This study aims to evaluate Pont and Howes analysis in students of the 2022 and 2023 classes of Deutro Melayu race at the Faculty of Dentistry, YARSI University. Method: This study was conducted on 53 study models consisting of 28 students of the 2022 class and 25 students of the 2023 class. The study models were measured for Pont and Howes analysis then the data were processed with One Sample T-Test Independent and One Sample Non-Parametric tests. Results: The results of the Pont analysis showed a premolar index of 38.52 ± 4.90 and a molar index of 48.15 ± 6.12 smaller than the standard Pont value (premolar index 80 and molar index 64). While the Howes analysis was 39.93% smaller than the standard Howes value (44%). This study shows a statistically significant difference between the Pont and Howes values due to racial and ethnic differences in the study population. Conclusion: The Pont and Howes analyses in this study are smaller than their respective standard values. The use of Pont and Howes analyses in Islam is considered permissible (mubah) or recommended (mandub) and is considered an act of worship when based on the intention to improve the quality of dental health services and develop beneficial knowledge.

Abstract

Background: High academic pressure among dental students is often associated with mental health conditions that are presumed to play a role in academic achievement. Parental support is also presumed to contribute to academic achievement; therefore, the relationship among these factors still needs to be further investigated. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of mental health and parental support on grade point average (GPA) among preclinical students of the Faculty of Dentistry, YARSI University. Methods: This study was a quantitative analytic study with a cross-sectional design involving 119 preclinical students. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21 (DASS-21) questionnaire and a parental support questionnaire developed by the researcher and distributed via Google Forms. GPA data were obtained from the academic office of the Faculty of Dentistry, YARSI University. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation test. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between depression and students’ GPA (p = 0.022; r = −0.210) as well as between anxiety and students’ GPA (p = 0.025; r = −0.205), with a negative direction and weak strength of correlation. The stress variable (p = 0.113; r = −0.146) and parental support (p = 0.149; r = 0.133) did not show a significant relationship with students’ GPA. Discussion: The negative relationship between depression and anxiety indicates that mental health can affect students’ academic achievement. These conditions may disrupt cognitive function and reduce learning motivation, thereby affecting students’ ability to optimally participate in the learning process. Conclusion: There is a significant effect of depression and anxiety, while there is no significant effect of stress and parental support on the GPA of preclinical students at the Faculty of Dentistry, YARSI University.

Abstract

Background: This study aims to analyze the differences in Maxilla Canine Index (MxCI) and Mandibular Canine Index (MCI) in preclinical students of the Faculty of Dentistry, YARSI University, and explore the Islamic perspective on its use in forensic identification. Method: A descriptive observational method with a crosssectional approach was used in 115 samples (18 males, 97 females). Measurements were performed on dental models using digital calipers, followed by univariate and bivariate analysis with the Mann-Whitney U test due to the non-normal distribution of data in the female group. Result: The results showed a mean value of MxCI of 0.498 (SD 0.124) and MCI of 0.528 (SD 0.085). There was no significant difference between MxCI and MCI between genders (p MxCI=0.568; p MCI=0.614). Descriptively, females' scores were slightly higher, likely due to sample imbalance and external factors such as nutrition. Conclusion: The MxCI and MCI are not sensitive enough as sole indicators of sexual dimorphism in this population, requiring a combination of other methods..

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a significant oral health issue among school-aged children. Parental knowledge plays a crucial role in shaping children's oral health behavior, including preventive efforts through topical fluoride application. Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between parental knowledge regarding topical fluoride and dental caries prevalence in children aged 9-11 years at SDN Kelapa Gading Timur 01 North Jakarta, as well as its review from an Islamic perspective. Research method: The research method used is a correlational study with a quantitative approach, where knowledge data were collected via questionnaires and caries data through clinical examinations using DMFT and deft indices, subsequently analyzed with the Spearman correlation test. Results: The results showed that the level of parental knowledge was in the fair to good category and the prevalence of dental caries in children was in the low to moderate category. Statistical analysis revealed significant relationship between parental knowledge regarding topical fluoride and the prevalence of dental caries in the study subjects (p < 0.05). From an Islamic perspective, efforts to prevent dental caries are a form of parental responsibility in maintaining the child's physical health as an amanah (mandate) from Allah SWT. Abstract

Background: Saliva is a crucial biological fluid in maintaining oral homeostasis through its buffering capacity and mechanical cleansing functions. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains bioactive polyphenolic compounds, particularly catechins, which have the potential to modulate the chemical environment of saliva. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the differences in salivary pH and unstimulated salivary flow rate among individuals consuming green tea once daily compared to three times daily for seven days. Methods: This quasi-experimental study involved 30 participants divided into Group A (once daily), Group B (three times daily), and a control group. Saliva samples were collected using the spitting method. Data were analyzed using the GLM Repeated Measures test and the Friedman test. Results: A significant increase in salivary pH was observed in all groups (p-value < 0.05), with the highest stability found in the group consuming green tea three times daily. However, no significant changes were observed in unstimulated salivary flow rate across all groups (p-value ≥ 0.05). Conclusion: Green tea consumption significantly improves salivary quality (pH) without affecting the quantity of secretion (flow rate). This practice aligns with the principles of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, particularly ḥifẓ al-nafs (preservation of life/health), as a form of human responsibility in maintaining physical well-being as a trust from Allah SWT.
