Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of MSMEs on poverty alleviation in Indonesia utilizing ARDL approach. The independent variables examined include the quantity of MSMEs, labor, and investment, with poverty serving as the dependent variable. Data spanning from 1990 to 2023 were employed for this analysis. The findings indicate that the number of MSMEs exerts no influence on poverty levels in either the short or long term. Conversely, the MSMEs workforce demonstrates a positive effect on poverty reduction in the short term, while investment yields a more substantial impact in the long term. Given the heterogeneity in poverty levels and MSME development across different regions in Indonesia, it is essential to consider regional variables when assessing the impact of MSMEs. Adopting a more region-specific approach will enable policies to better address the specific needs and challenges encountered by each region, thereby providing a fertile ground for future research.

Abstract

Issues surrounding the difficulty of buying a house for local people in the Special Province of Yogyakarta are undeniable. This raises the question: can local residents afford a decent house? This study aims to develop a framework to describe housing affordability using surveys and econometric methods. A hedonic price model was created based on data from 174 houses in urban areas in Yogyakarta. This model estimates house prices considered appropriate, derived from a survey of 283 local residents who do not own a house. The results indicate that local residents cannot afford to buy a house. The regression model estimates house prices higher than the mean or median values of respondents' perceptions of affordability. Surveyed respondents deemed houses with minimum specifications as follows: a lot size of 53.6 m², building size of 89.4 m², front road width of 4.4 m, and a distance of 2.7 km to shopping facilities. The estimated price for such housing ranges between IDR 300,000,000 and IDR 400,000,000. These findings highlight a gap between market prices and local affordability. The government can use these specifications as input to design policies that provide affordable housing for local residents in Yogyakarta

Abstract

Tourism sector is one of the key sectors in the national economy. This study aims to analyze the impact of amenities and accessibility on domestic tourism demand in Indonesia using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) with panel data. The results show that the number of hotels and road quality have a positive and significant effect on the number of domestic tourist trips, while airport and port infrastructure do not significantly influence tourism demand. Additionally, per capita income is identified as a major determinant of domestic travel decisions. It implies that the government should increase in the provision of road infrastructure and support the growth of the hotel sector to stimulate domestic tourism. Tourism industry’s stakeholders should also optimize land-based travel promotions and provide more accommodation options suitable for various tourist segments.

Abstract

Smoking substantially adds to chronic illnesses and healthcare expenditures. Current smokers typically incur substantial annual costs, whereas former smokers have distinct health hazards associated with their previous tobacco consumption. This study utilizes IFLS data (2007–2014) to examine healthcare expenditures between current and former smokers in Indonesia. This study used propensity score matching (PSM) to mitigate sample selection bias in smoking cessation. Research indicates that smoking status substantially influences healthcare expenditures, with former smokers facing elevated costs—presumably due to the delayed emergence of smoking-related diseases. Significant determinants affecting smoking cessation encompass age, educational attainment, chronic disease, and body mass index (BMI). Simultaneously, active lifestyles and increased expenditure are associated with persistent smoking habits. These findings underscore the necessity for specialized post-cessation assistance and customized tobacco control programs that account for individual variances.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of internet utilization on the proportion of local government procurement transactions allocated to Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) through E-Katalog. The dataset covers 504 districts in Indonesia over the period 2020–2023 and is estimated using a Two-Way Fixed Effects (TWFE) model. The results indicate that a one-percentage-point increase in internet utilization is associated with a 0.212-percentage-point rise in the share of local government transactions awarded to MSEs (significant at 0.05%). Heterogeneity analysis reveals a significant effect in Eastern Indonesia (β=0.487; p<0.05) but not in Western Indonesia (β=0.057), suggesting stronger impacts in digitally lagging regions. These findings are consistent with Information Economics and Transaction Cost Theory, highlighting the role of digitalization in reducing information asymmetry and transaction barriers. Overall, this study underscores the importance of expanding internet utilization among MSEs and implementing complementary affirmative policies—such as targeted digital access subsidies and strengthened digital procurement literacy—to promote more inclusive and equitable public procurement for MSEs.Penelitian ini mengkaji pengaruh tingkat utilisasi internet terhadap proporsi transaksi pemerintah daerah kepada Usaha Mikro dan Kecil (UMK) melalui E-Katalog menggunakan data panel pada 504 kabupaten/kota di Indonesia tahun 2020–2023, dengan metode Two-Way Fixed Effect (TWFE).

Abstract

This study analyzes relationships between ASEAN exports and key macroeconomic variables (imports, GDP current prices, GDP per capita, inflation, FDI) during 2013-2022. Few studies have discussed this relationship using a Vector Error Correction Model approach with comprehensive panel data from all ASEAN member states. Results reveal that exports exhibit high endogeneity with 98.21% of variability explained by internal dynamics. This research identifies a temporal dichotomy where imports positively affect exports in the short-term but negatively in the long-term. We observe an "Economic Development Paradox" where GDP growth reduces export orientation as domestic markets strengthen. Granger causality tests confirm the export-led growth hypothesis for ASEAN economies. FDI functions as a structural catalyst with positive long-term effects on export performance. This study contributes methodologically through analysis that combines long-term equilibrium relationships with short-term adjustment mechanisms. These findings have implications for regional trade policy, highlighting the need for strategic FDI enhancement, balanced development approaches, and strengthened value chain integration to sustain ASEAN's competitiveness, which has not yet formed a fully integrated economic community.

Abstract

The economic statistics of the micro and small industries in North Kalimantan Province indicate that the added value reached IDR. 516.6 billion from micro industries and IDR. 46.6 billion from small industries in 2022. However, these industries only absorbed 2% of the total workforce in North Kalimantan Province. This indirectly suggests that the performance of the manufacturing sector for micro and small industries has not yet been optimized. This study aims to identify the factors influencing efficiency and assess productivity in micro and small industries in North Kalimantan Province from 2015 to 2023. The results show that only input value and output value significantly affect the efficiency of micro and small industries in North Kalimantan Province, while the number of firms and the workforce do not have a significant impact on efficiency during the 2015–2023 period. However, simultaneously, input value, output value, number of firms, and workforce influence the efficiency of micro and small industries in North Kalimantan Province.

Abstract

Bank Indonesia enforces the Statutory Reserve Requirement (RRR/GWM) as a key monetary policy instrument aimed at maintaining liquidity stability within the banking system. This policy plays a crucial role in regulating the amount of funds banks can allocate to society through credit distribution. This study examines the impact of Reserve Requirements (RRR/GWM), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation, bank size, the BI Rate, and third-party funds on bank credit. A dynamic panel data analysis is conducted using the System Generalized Method of Moments (SYS-GMM) approach to address potential endogeneity bias. The sample consists of 42 conventional banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2014 to 2023. The results indicate that an increase in Reserve Requirements, bank size, the BI Rate, and third-party funds positively and significantly influences credit distribution. In contrast, GDP and inflation exert a negative and significant impact on bank lending. These findings highlight the crucial role of monetary policy in shaping banking dynamics, particularly in credit allocation. The policy implications derived from this study provide valuable insights for regulators in designing more effective liquidity management strategies in the future.

Abstract

This study assesses social capital in Indonesia using the Item Response Theory (IRT) with the Graded Response Model (GRM), based on data from the 2021 Happiness Level Survey (SPTK) by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), involving 74,684 respondents. Social capital is measured across three dimensions: trust, social participation, and tolerance. Trust is further categorized into bonding (close relations), bridging (community leaders), and linking (institutions), with the highest levels in Sulawesi and the lowest in urban areas like Jakarta and Banten. Social participation is higher in rural areas, while tolerance is strongest in multicultural regions such as East Nusa Tenggara and North Kalimantan. The findings underscore the need for region-specific strategies to strengthen social capital, including institutional transparency and inclusive engagement. Reviving programs like Pendidikan Moral Pancasila (PMP) and the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM) can enhance trust, participation, and tolerance. The IRT-GRM model offers a robust approach for analyzing ordinal data and informing inclusive development policies.

Abstract

Indonesia's Vision 2045 aims to become a high-income country by boosting per capita income and ensuring inclusivity. Financial inclusion is a key national strategy to drive economic growth and equitable welfare. This study examines the effect of household characteristics on financial inclusion and its impact on the welfare of male-headed and female-headed households, using SUSENAS data. Logistic regression and Propensity Score Matching methods were used. The findings reveal that productive mobile phone ownership, non-food expenditure proportion, higher education, productive-age members, social assistance, microenterprises, and urban residence increase the probability of financial inclusion, while agricultural sectors and older household heads reduce it. Financial inclusion positively affects welfare, with greater benefits observed among female-headed households. This study gives policymakers insights into designing more effective financial inclusion strategies to enhance household welfare.
