Abstract

The development of information technology, particularly the internet and social media, has brought about significant changes in how individuals, especially teenagers and young adults, shape their perceptions of their body image. Body image disturbances often arise as negative perceptions, typically triggered by exposure to social media that showcases ideal beauty standards, such as slim or muscular bodies. Social media has become one of the main sources of social comparison, where individuals compare themselves to body images curated visually by public figures, celebrities, or peers. A qualitative approach was used, with data collection methods including the analysis of relevant academic literature, including previous research, scientific journals, and current literature. Studies show that these comparisons contribute to body dissatisfaction, particularly among adolescent girls who are vulnerable to social pressure. Surveys by APJII and We Are Social indicate that the majority of internet users are teenagers who spend hours on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. This research aims to analyse how social media influences body image perceptions among teenagers, identify the most influential factors, and explore mechanisms to help reduce the negative impact of social media on mental health and body image.

Abstract

Child sexual abuse is a form of violence that has long-term psychological, physical, and social impacts, requiring attention from society, families, and educational institutions. This study employed a qualitative approach using a literature review method. Data collection was conducted through systematic searches of databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar, validated through source triangulation. Data analysis utilised content analysis to identify themes and patterns. The findings indicated that school-based education is effective in equipping children with self-protection knowledge, although it faces challenges such as limited teacher training, cultural resistance, and insufficient teaching materials. Community-based advocacy has been shown to enhance public awareness, strengthen child protection policies, and reduce stigma against victims, despite obstacles such as weak cross-sector coordination. The study concludes by emphasising the importance of collaboration between education and advocacy in developing sustainable prevention strategies. It recommends the development of culturally sensitive curricula, teacher training programmes, and improved cross-sector coordination to enhance child protection. Practical implications include designing policies that support the synergy of education and advocacy to create a safe environment for children in Indonesia.

Abstract

The deportation of refugees and illegal immigrants is a complex issue involving legal, human rights, and socio-cultural impacts in both the receiving and origin countries. This study examined the phenomenon of refugee and illegal immigrant deportation and its social and cultural effects, focusing on cultural identity, social marginalisation, and the economic conditions of deported individuals. The research employs a qualitative approach by analysing literature from various sources, such as journals and books, from a sociocultural perspective. The findings reveal that deportation causes profound social dislocation, severing social and economic ties established in the host country, and exacerbating social marginalisation and cultural identity crises. In the home country, deported individuals often face social stigma, which hinders reintegration. Additionally, deportation disrupts the economic networks built in the host country. The study concludes that more humane policies and social reintegration support for deported individuals are essential.

Abstract

This study examines the persistent limitations of retributive punishment within the Indonesian criminal justice system, particularly its inability to fully address victim needs, offender accountability, and social restoration. The objective of the research is to analyze the application of restorative justice principles as an alternative to conventional punishment and to assess their normative legitimacy, practical implementation, and implications for criminal law reform in Indonesia. The research subjects consist of primary and secondary legal materials, including legislation, institutional regulations, court decisions, and scholarly works relevant to restorative justice and criminal justice reform, which were selected purposively based on relevance and authority. Employing a qualitative normative legal research approach, data were collected through systematic document study and literature review, supported by statutory, conceptual, and comparative legal analyses. The data were analyzed using qualitative legal interpretation to identify patterns, coherence, and gaps in the application of restorative justice principles. The findings reveal that restorative justice has contributed to a paradigm shift in criminal case resolution by emphasizing harm restoration, victim participation, and offender reintegration, particularly at the investigation and prosecution stages. However, its implementation remains fragmented and largely dependent on discretionary policies rather than comprehensive statutory regulation. The study concludes that restorative justice represents a legitimate and transformative alternative to punishment that can strengthen the humanistic orientation of criminal law while enhancing social justice and legal responsiveness. Its application has important implications for the development of a more balanced, inclusive, and socially grounded criminal justice system in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study looked at assessing organizational performance through agile methodologies within selected Aluminium manufacturing firms in Delta State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: examine the effect of Agile Iterative Development on organisational performance, assess the influence of Agile Collaboration and Communication on organisational performance, determine the effect of Agile Adaptive Planning on organisational performance, and evaluate the contribution of Agile Continuous Integration and Testing to organisational performance. A sample size of 300 respondents was selected, and 287 valid questionnaires were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression techniques. The findings revealed that all four Agile dimensions, AID, ACC, AAP, and ACIT, had positive and significant effects on organisational performance. AID enhanced operational efficiency through improved feedback cycles; ACC strengthened teamwork and communication, thereby improving production flow; AAP enabled firms to respond quickly to disruptions and market fluctuations; and ACIT improved quality consistency through early error detection and frequent system integration. Regression results further showed that the combined agile variables explained a substantial proportion of the variance in organisational performance, indicating their strong predictive power. The study concludes that agile methodologies significantly enhance productivity, adaptability, quality assurance, and overall performance in Aluminium manufacturing firms. It recommends that firms strengthen iterative processes, adopt digital communication systems, institutionalise flexible planning frameworks, and implement continuous integration and testing mechanisms to improve efficiency and competitiveness.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of ethnicity on recruitment practices in the Delta State Civil Service, examining how ethnic considerations affect merit-based selection, workforce efficiency, and overall organizational performance. The study employed a cross-sectional research design and was guided by Weber’s Bureaucratic Theory, which emphasizes meritocracy, formal rules, and competence as the foundation of an effective public service. The study assesses the extent to which recruitment processes in Delta State conform to or deviate from these principles. The study population comprised 3,723 civil servants, from which a sample of 397 respondents was selected using a stratified sampling technique to ensure adequate representation across ministries and cadres. Out of the 397 questionnaires distributed, 341 were returned and analyzed. Three hypotheses guided the analysis. Findings from the first hypothesis confirm that ethnicity significantly influences recruitment decisions, often overriding merit and weakening transparency, contrary to Weberian expectations of impartiality and professionalism. The second hypothesis established a strong relationship between ethnicity-based recruitment and worker inefficiency, revealing that individuals appointed through ethnic patronage often lack the required competence, resulting in lower productivity and poor service delivery. This supports Weber’s argument that recruitment based on merit is vital for bureaucratic efficiency. The third hypothesis identified a moderate yet significant relationship between ethnicity and merit, showing that although meritocratic structures exist, ethnic pressures continue to undermine their implementation. The study concludes that ethnicity-based recruitment weakens institutional capacity, reduces efficiency, and hampers long-term development. It recommends, among others, that the Delta State government should strengthen transparent merit-based recruitment systems, enforce anti-discriminatory policies, and promote continuous professional development in line with Weberian principles to build a more accountable and performance-driven civil service in Delta State.

Abstract

This study examined the influence of performance appraisal systems on employee motivation in selected ministries of Delta and Rivers States, Nigeria. The research focused on five performance appraisal dimensions: Traditional Performance Appraisal Systems, 360-Degree Feedback Systems, Management by Objectives (MBO), the Critical Incident Method, and Ranking and Paired Comparison Methods. The study was motivated by the need to understand how different appraisal practices affect motivation and performance within the public sector, particularly in an environment where efficiency, accountability, and service delivery are critical. A cross-sectional research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 30,500 public service employees drawn from selected ministries in Delta and Rivers States. Using the Gill and Johnson (2010) sample size determination table, a sample size of 652 respondents was selected. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, of which 537 copies were correctly completed and deemed suitable for analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, and multiple regression techniques to test the study’s hypotheses at a 5% level of significance. The findings revealed that all five performance appraisal systems examined had positive and statistically significant relationships with employee motivation. Traditional performance appraisal systems were found to enhance motivation when appraisal processes were clear, fair, and consistently applied. The 360-degree feedback system showed a strong positive influence on motivation by promoting fairness, accountability, and comprehensive feedback. Management by Objectives emerged as the most influential appraisal method, significantly enhancing motivation through participatory goal-setting, clarity of expectations, and measurable performance tracking. The Critical Incident Method positively influenced motivation by focusing on key job-related behaviors and timely feedback. At the same time, the Ranking and Paired Comparison Methods also contributed positively by encouraging recognition and healthy competition among employees. The study concluded that effective performance appraisal systems are vital tools for enhancing employee motivation in the public sector. It recommended, among other things, adopting a balanced, integrated appraisal framework that combines traditional and modern approaches to improve motivation, accountability, and overall organizational effectiveness in public service ministries.

Abstract

Tax disputes arise from disagreements between taxpayers and tax authorities, typically due to differing interpretations of tax regulations or audit procedures. One recurring issue concerns the obligation to deliver the Audit Report (Laporan Hasil Pemeriksaan/LHP) to taxpayers prior to the issuance of a tax assessment letter. This study aims to examine the legal obligation to provide the audit report from the perspective of legal certainty and the principle of checks and balances in tax dispute resolution. The research employs a normative-empirical method using a case study approach of Tax Court Decision Number PUT-011120.99/2023/PP/M.XIIB/Tahun 2024. The normative analysis reviews the provisions of the Law on General Provisions and Tax Procedures (UU KUP) and its implementing regulations, while the empirical analysis evaluates the legal reasoning of the panel of judges in the decision. The findings indicate the existence of legal uncertainty regarding the obligation to deliver the audit report, which in practice may reduce transparency and weaken the protection of taxpayers’ rights. Although the panel held that the Tax Assessment Letter was legally valid because a Notification of Audit Findings (SPHP) had been issued, the decision did not comprehensively address the obligation to provide the audit report under applicable legislation. Therefore, regulatory clarification is necessary to ensure legal certainty and to maintain a balanced relationship between tax authorities and taxpayers.
