Abstract

Cigarette smoke is a source of free radicals contains carcinogenic chemical substances. The purple sweet potatoes contains anthocyanins which has potential antioxidant activities to neutralize free radicals. This research aim was to know the effect of purple sweet potatoes extract on the levels of lung’s superoxide dismutase (SOD) and number of foam cells in aorta of wistar rat which were exposed to cigarette smoke. This research was an experimental study with complete random design and post test only control group design. The twenty five wistar divided into five groups: control group (P0); group was only exposed to cigarette smoke (P1); groups were exposed to cigarette smoke and purple sweet potatoes extract in dose of 0,065 (P2), 0,13 (P3), and 0,26 (P4) g/day for 90 days. Data was analyzed by One Way Anova and Post Hoc Tukey HSD test. The result of this study indicate that the levels of lung’s SOD were 25,26 ± 2,35; 13,11 ± 3,85; 19,24 ± 3,95; 9,20 ± 6,23; 24,53 ± 5,75 unit/mg, while the average number of foam cells in aorta were 19,68 ± 7,74; 40,40 ± 10,67; 27,16 ± 4,28; 25,92 ± 5,24; 16,80 ± 4,22 for P1, P2, P3, P4, and P5 respectively. There was different SOD levels in lung and foam cells in aorta significantly between control and treatment groups (p < 0,05). It was concluded that the purple sweet potatoes extract can increase SOD levels in lung and decrease foam cell in aorta of wistar rat which were exposed to cigarette smoke. Keywords: purple sweet potatoes, SOD, foam cell, cigarette smoke

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 was increases globally. DM can be affected by several factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity and obesity. This study used  a quantitative research and cross sectional design with 30 subjects. Analysis of data was carried out using pearson correlation. The result of this research showed that almost respondents between 50-64 years old (73.3%) and (83.3%) with low educational (53.3%). The average of WHR are 0.9 and BMI are 27.4 kg/m2. The results showed that BMI have significat association with  fasting blood sugar levels (p<0.05). However, there was no significant association between WHR and fasting blood sugar levels. Keywords : diabetes mellitus, body mass index, waist hip ratio

The results of food waste showed about, 33.9% for main food, 25.7% for animal based side dishes, 37.5% for non-animal based side dishes and 38.1% for vegetables and 1.1% for fruits. Respondents that declare unsatisfactory aroma have a low appeal to consume the food served because the aroma is able to cause nausea and decreased appetite. The appearance of food served by the hospital is less varied.

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome are commonly found in many adolescent girls. There are several factors that contribute to the incidence of premenstrual syndrome such as hormonal changes, nutritional status, food intake, and lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that mostly affect the incidence of premenstrual syndrome in adolescent girls. This study used analytic observational design with cross sectional approach. As many as 100 adolescent girls in Brawijaya Smart School (BSS) Malang were randomly chosen to take a part in this stud. The independent variables in this study were total fat intake and intake of micronutrients (iron, potassium, calcium, vitamins B1 and B6) that measured by using Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and the dependent variable was the severity premenstrual syndrome, as measured using Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ),. The results showed that some of the nutrient intake of food that was classified as less was iron intake (94%), potassium intake (95%), calcium intake 81%), intake of B1 and B6 (84% and 43%), while total fat intake mostly were  high (86%) and most respondents experienced moderate severity of premenstrual syndrome (97%). The conclusions of this study is the most influential factors on the premenstrual syndrome is iron intake. So it is necessary to increase iron intake in adolescent girls., especially food from animal products.  Keywords: premenstrual syndrome, iron, calium, calcium, vitamine B1 and B6, total fat

Abstract

School-aged children need adequate nutrients to support their growth. Infact, the school-aged children in Indonesia eat a low nutritional breakfast, even many who do not eat breakfast. An alternative solution is the manufacture of cereals that are practical yet nutrient-dense as high in protein and calcium. The purpose of this study was to determine the protein, calcium contents and sensory properties of Corn Flakes based on anchovy flour as an alternative breakfast for school-aged Children. This research uses Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Treatment is the ratio of corn flour:anchovy flour that are 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, and 70:30. Each treatment was repeated 5 times. The results showed an increase in the concentration of anchovy flour gave a significant difference in protein content (Kruskal Wallis, p=0,000) and calcium (ANOVA, p=0,000) of Corn Flakes. However, the use of anchovy flour decreases the sensory properties of Corn Flakes in terms of color, texture, taste, and aroma (Kruskal-Wallis, p<0.05). Conclusion, the best Corn Flakes composition of corn flour with anchovy flour is 80:20 to obtain better sensory properties of Corn Flakes. Consumption of 30 g of Corn Flakes TITN per day can meet the protein and calcium needs of children aged 7-9 years by 8.96% and 45.99%. Keywords: Corn flakes, anchovy flour, protein, calcium, sensory properties.
