Abstract

Iron is an essential micronutrient for bacteria, functioning as a cofactor in vital processes such as electron transport, heme synthesis, and DNA replication. However, excess iron triggers the Fenton reaction, producing harmful reactive oxygen species. To manage this, E. coli has evolved regulatory systems to maintain iron balance despite its scarcity in the environment, with free iron concentrations as low as 10^-18 M. The iron-binding repressor protein Fur regulates genes involved in iron uptake, transfer, and storage. The FeoABC system is the primary route for Fe2+ entry, with FeoB enabling the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and transferring it to FeoA, which likely prevents wasteful iron binding to negatively charged cellular membranes. This efficient management of iron acquisition and storage not only ensures cellular survival but also provides insights into bacterial metabolic strategies for optimizing iron use while minimizing damage from reactive oxygen species. Highlights: Iron is crucial for bacterial functions like DNA replication and heme synthesis. Excess iron triggers Fenton reaction, creating harmful reactive oxygen species. FeoABC system regulates Fe2+ uptake and balances iron acquisition in bacteria. Keywords: Iron homeostasis, FeoABC system, E. coli, Fur protein, reactive oxygen species

Abstract

Background:Pediculosis (human head lice) infestation is aglobal problem among primary schools.Aims: This study has been conducted to investigate the prevalence of head lice among some primary schools in Diyala province. Methodology and Results: The study samples were randomly collected from the city center and villages, during the period from October/2022 to February/2023. This study examined 1579 pupils to detect pediculosis. The results have revealed 234 infections among the school students which represents 14.819% of the total examined sample. The infections among females were higher than males (217) females were infected which represents 92.735% of the total infections. Moreover, the study found that the proportion of pediculosis in rural areas was higher than in urban,60.256% and 39.743% respectively. The study has also shown the highest rate of infection among females in ages 10-14 years 39.316%, compared with other groups, Moreover, the study has shown the relationship between the mother’s education level and pediculosis. The percentage of infection among students who have mothers without university degrees was 83.333% while those who have mothers with university degrees were 16.666%. The study has also pointed to the significant effect of family size on infection percentages. A high percentage was recognized among those who live in big families,66.239%. Conclusion, significance, and impact of study: Infection is prevalent among pupils, and risk factors play an important role in this situation which requires that controlling the infection and treating infected pupils be given the utmost importance to increase awareness. Highlights: Prevalence: 14.8% of students infected, higher in females and rural areas. Risk Factors: Low maternal education and large family size increase infection. Action: Control measures and awareness programs are urgently needed. Keywords: Pediculosis, Head lice, Nits, Pediculus humanus capitis

Abstract

General Background: The integration of interactive learning media has become essential in contemporary education to meet the demands of digital transformation and engage students more effectively. Specific Background: In SDN Sarirogo, low student performance in Pancasila Education, particularly regarding complex topics such as constitution and norms, highlights the need for innovative teaching approaches. Knowledge Gap: Existing instructional methods rely heavily on conventional techniques, such as lectures and textbook exercises, which fail to stimulate interest or cater to diverse learning styles. This has created a gap in effective engagement and comprehension of abstract concepts like constitutional principles and societal norms. Aims: This study aims to develop and evaluate interactive learning media using Macromedia Flash to enhance student understanding and interest in the subject matter. Results: Employing the ADDIE development model, the research yielded a highly effective product validated by media, design, and subject experts, achieving an average score of over 90% in expert evaluations. Field trials involving 30 students demonstrated a significant improvement in learning outcomes, with post-test scores markedly surpassing pre-test results. Novelty: Unlike prior approaches, this study leverages multimedia integration—combining audio, visual, animation, and interactive elements—to address diverse learning needs and provide an engaging platform for Pancasila Education. Implications: The findings underscore the potential of interactive learning media to transform traditional pedagogies, providing educators with tools to foster deeper understanding and sustained interest in constitutional and normative education. This approach not only supports curriculum goals within the Merdeka Belajar framework but also aligns with the broader vision of equipping students with foundational knowledge essential for civic engagement and societal harmony. Highlights: Innovative Approach: The study utilizes Macromedia Flash to create multimedia-rich educational content. Effective Results: Validations and field trials demonstrate over 90% effectiveness in improving student engagement and learning outcomes. Curriculum Alignment: Supports the Merdeka Belajar curriculum by integrating interactive media tailored to students' diverse learning styles. Abstract

Infection control is essential in dentistry to ensure patient and practitioner safety. However, gaps often exist between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of senior dentistry students regarding infection control methods, focusing on critical areas such as handling dental chairs, sterilization processes, use of personal protective equipment, and tool storage. A questionnaire was administered to 666 participants, comprising first- to fifth-year dental students and newly graduated dentists from various academic institutions in Iraq. Results revealed that while 61.1% of respondents demonstrated adequate theoretical knowledge of sterilization procedures, adherence to best practices was inconsistent. For instance, only 10.2% of participants consistently wore protective eyewear, and 18.2% left dropped instruments unattended during procedures. Disparities in responses were statistically significant (p > 0.05), highlighting knowledge gaps in the practical application of infection control protocols. This study's findings underscore the need for systematic interventions to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, emphasizing the role of regular seminars, practical workshops, and curriculum revisions to reinforce infection control adherence. The study provides novel insights into the critical yet underexplored area of infection control practices among dentistry students in developing countries, highlighting institutional and behavioral factors influencing compliance. These findings have broad implications for improving infection control training programs and promoting safety standards in dental education and practice. Highlights: Assess dental students' infection control knowledge, attitudes, practices. Questionnaire for preclinical and clinical students; 666 participants analyzed. High knowledge, poor adherence; recommends annual seminars to improve compliance. Keywords: dental students, infection prevention, and sterilization methods
