Abstract

This study is aimed at knowing the social behaviors of mentally-retarded students in education learning. As a survey study, the research involves the use of interview and observation as data collection procedures. The subjects of the study are 34 mentally-retarded students. The data is analyzed in a qualitative descriptive manner. The finding shows that mentally-retarded students need intensive and continuous consultation and support for their social behaviors in the physical education learning. In order for these students to participate well in the learning-teaching interaction, it is important to show to them the practical importance and value of doing physical practice. The instructions for the physical practice tasks should be brief and clear, and there should be not more than one instruction at a time. The teacher needs to understand students characteristics and choose the appropriate learning approach.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of competency assessment. The research population consisted of two subpopulations, namely (1) engineering and vocational education experts, machinery practice instructors, and industry practitioners, and (2) students of Industrial Engineering Vocational High Schools in Surakarta. The sample from the first subpopulation was selected using the purposive sampling technique and that from the second subpopulation was selected using the proportional random sampling technique. The data were collected through questionnaires, a paper-and-pencil test, and a performance test. The data were analyzed using the descriptive technique and the LISREL model analysis. The results show the following. First, the construct model consists of the learning style construct, personality construct, and competency construct. Second, there is a positive and significant relationship between students personality and learning style, students learning style and personality, students learning style and vocational competency, and there is a negative and significant relationship between students personality and vocational competency. The model of vocational competency development fits the empirical data. Third, the model of vocational competency assessment consists of three components, namely personality, learning style, and competency. The model is called the PLC model. Abstract

This study aims to describe disaster preparedness and trauma healing programs from the context, input, process, and product aspects. The context refers to the appropriateness of the program design, the input to resources in the program, the process to the accomplishment of the program, and the product to impacts and benefits of the program. This study was an evaluation research study. The subjects were 105 teachers from 34 schools in Bantul Regency consisting of art, guidance and counseling, and religion teachers. The data were collected using questionnaires and were analyzed using the content analysis on the training materials and other relevant documents. The results show that the program is relevant to the needs in relation to trauma healing and disaster preparedness. The materials of the training help the participants understand trauma healing and disaster preparedness. According to the participants, the training is effective although the materials need to be synchronized. The trainers have been applying and spreading out the result of the training although only few of them have already developed the materials.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the educational program at Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Teknologi dan Industri (SMKTI) in the city of Bandar Lampung, in terms of (1) program effectiveness, (2) program quality, and (3) gaps between SMKTI students employability skills and industrial demand the first time they work. The evaluation model employed was a combination between the model of context, input, process, output, and outcome (CIPOO) and the Provus gap model. The research subjects were SMKTI students registered in the academic year 2004/2005 and employees who were SMKTI graduates. The data collecting instruments were questionnaires. The data were analyzed using MANOVA and ANCOVA. The research findings indicate that (1) from the number of classes demanded and supplied and the attainment effect, the SMKTI educational program is ineffective and the indicator of future workforce market, the SMKTI educational program is ineffective, (2) the quality of SMKTI educational program is good in developing technological skills and personal management skills but not good in developing fundamental skills and teamwork skills, and (3) the SMKTI educational program is able to equip its students with the employability skills required the first time they work.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the effectiveness of Chempuzzle on increasing studentss understanding of atomic structure, elements periodic system, chemical bonding, and basic laws of chemistry concepts. This study has been done in four high school in Province DIY on 2008/2009 academic year. There are 247 students become participants of this quasi-experiment study. Instuctional methods including chempuzzle was conducted in this study came into three stage: chempuzzle introduction, chemdoku problem solving exercises, chemkuro problem solving exercises, and discussion. The data collection was devided into two steps. First, measurement of students priorknowledge and the second is measurement of students concept understanding. The result of Anacova test showed that the concept understanding of student from Gunung Kidul (Fo = 12.041; p = 0.001), Kota Yogyakarta (Fo = 6.918; p= 0.010), and Kulon Progo (Fo = 15.923; p = 0.000) were significantly different for the two groups, meanwhile those from Sleman (Fo = 1.418; p = 0.237) were not different for the two groups. This results showed that Chempuzzle is effective to be implemented on learning process of atomic structure, elements periodic system, chemical bonding, and basic laws of chemistry concepts in the three of four high school. To be an effective method on improving student concept acquisition, it need more time for preparing and introducing the game, and need teacher creativity to make the puzzle form interesting.

Abstract

One of the major problems faced by a university nowadays is plagiarism. The problem of plagiarism is found not only in Indonesian universities but also in overseas universities. Lecturers in overseas universities often find papers containing copy and paste sentences. This study aims to investigate plagiarism attitudes among Indonesian university students in Perth, Western Australia. Further, this study also intends to investigate differences in plagiarism attitudes between male and female Indonesian students. The results of this research may help Indonesian students to realize and understand that plagiarism relates to the academic dishonesty. Moreover, students must understand that achieving good grades is important but presenting the original masterpieces from the good sources of their own knowledge is more important.

Abstract

This research study aims at: (1) finding out the forms of difficulties in writing in vocabulary and grammar of the second year students of SMP 1 Selong East Lombok West Nusa Tenggara in the school year 2008/2009, and (2) finding out the causal factors of difficulties in writing in vocabulary and grammar of the second year students of SMP 1 Selong East Lombok West Nusa Tenggara in the school year 2008/2009. The study was a case study. It used a qualitative positivistic descriptive approach. The participants consisted of 34 students. The main data were obtained from the 34 students compositions. The other data were collected from observation, interviews, and recording. The results show that (1) eight most common errors of students writing were: verb-tenses, articles, word forms, capital letters, punctuation, missing words, spelling, and prepositions; (2) verb-tense errors occupied the first rank (23.76%), followed by article errors (20.85%), and word form errors (10.62%); (3) two kinds of direct factors caused the students to make errors in the writing skills were: negative interlanguage and intralingual transfers in the forms of adverb interference, copulative verb interference, word-order interference, tense-form interference, overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, and incomplete application of rules; and (4) five sources of indirect factors caused the students to make errors in the writing skills were: students low motivation, lack of use of media, low frequency of the writing instruction, lack of parents support, and loose control of students learning.

Abstract

This research study was aimed at (1) comparing the Master of Education (M.Ed.) curricula of public universities and private universities of Bangladesh, and (2) identifying the similarities and dissimilarities along with the strengths and weaknesses of these curricula. Data and information necessary for the study were collected from the M.Ed. curricula of 2 public and 3 private universities of Bangladesh. Only qualitative analyses were done in examining the documentary information. A comparative method was employed to organize and analyze the information. Findings of the study revealed that the structures of the M.Ed. curricula of public universities were more organized than those of private universities. The objectives prescribed in the M.Ed. curricula of public university were more specific than those of private universities; and the objectives of the public university were stated in terms of measurable behavior.
