About the Journal GEN BIONIX: Jurnal Ilmiah Pendidikan Biologi is a peer-reviewed journal that accepts and publishes scholarly articles in the field of biology education, including the application of biological research findings in learning contexts. The journal aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by presenting empirical findings, conceptual ideas, and critical reviews related to the teaching and learning of biology. The scope of the journal includes: biology/science education at the secondary school and higher education levels; the development and utilization of biological research as learning resources or media; biology education curricula; classroom action research (CAR) and lesson study; qualitative research in biology education; learning and biology laboratory management; learning assessment; as well as issues and trends in biology teacher professionalism. The journal targets readers consisting of teachers, lecturers, researchers, students, and educational practitioners who have an interest in and contribute to the development of biology education. The types of articles accepted include empirical research articles (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods), classroom action research, literature reviews (both systematic and narrative reviews), and conceptual articles relevant to the field of biology education. Abstract

This study was motivated by the low learning outcomes and student motivation in Science (IPA) subjects at the junior high school level. The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of learning, learning motivation, and student learning outcomes through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, where each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 20 eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Alo’oa. Data were collected through observation, learning outcome tests, motivation questionnaires, and interviews. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed a significant improvement from cycle I to cycle II: learning quality increased from 74.25% to 82.55%, learning motivation increased from 69.79% to 86.76%, and the average learning outcomes improved from 64.33 to 79.82 with classical completeness reaching 90%. These findings indicate that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model is effective in improving learning quality, student motivation, and science learning outcomes.

Abstract

The low level of students’ communication skills and learning outcomes in science learning remained a major problem in the teaching and learning process at secondary schools. This condition was reflected in the lack of students’ active participation, the dominance of conventional teaching methods, and students’ low confidence in expressing opinions during classroom activities. This study aimed to improve students’ communication skills and learning outcomes through the implementation of the Numbered Head Together (NHT) learning model at SMK Swasta Kristen Tomosa 1 in the 2024/2025 academic year. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 30 students of class X-TKJ. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, documentation, communication skills rubrics, and learning achievement tests. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Numbered Head Together model improved the quality of learning from 68% to 92%, students’ communication skills from 68% to 92%, and students’ learning outcomes from an average score of 63.94 to 86.23 with a learning mastery level reaching 90%. These findings indicated that the Numbered Head Together model was effective in enhancing active participation, communication skills, and students’ learning outcomes in science learning.

Abstract

Low student learning outcomes in Integrated Science subjects remain a major problem in the learning process at schools, particularly because classroom instruction tends to be teacher-centered, causing students to be less active during learning activities. This study aimed to improve students’ learning outcomes through the implementation of the Active Knowledge Sharing learning strategy in Integrated Science at SMP Negeri 1 Ulumoro’o during the 2024/2025 academic year. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles, where each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 30 students of class VII-A. The data were collected through observation, learning achievement tests, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Active Knowledge Sharing strategy improved both student learning activities and learning outcomes. The average student score increased from 64.44 in Cycle I to 77.50 in Cycle II, while the learning mastery percentage increased from 60% to 86.67%. In addition, the quality of learning improved from a fair category to a very good category. These findings indicate that the Active Knowledge Sharing strategy was effective in creating a more active, collaborative, and meaningful Integrated Science learning environment.

Abstract

Low learning motivation, limited learning independence, and poor Biology learning outcomes remain critical challenges in secondary education, particularly when instructional practices are still dominated by conventional methods that inadequately engage students in active learning. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the Mind Mapping learning method in improving learning motivation, learning independence, and Biology learning outcomes among eleventh-grade science students at SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi in the 2023/2024 academic year. The study employed a Classroom Action Research design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, implemented through two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, achievement tests, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and comparative approaches across cycles. The findings revealed that the implementation of Mind Mapping increased students’ learning motivation from 62.43% to 89.12%, learning independence from 67.21% to 88.28%, and average learning outcomes from 69.52 to 81.8, while classical learning mastery improved from 59% to 88%. Hypothesis testing demonstrated that all indicators significantly achieved the predetermined targets at a 95% confidence level. These findings confirm that Mind Mapping is an effective instructional strategy for fostering more active, independent, and meaningful Biology learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Numbered Heads Together cooperative learning model to enhance eighth grade students understanding of science concepts. The research addresses persistent challenges in traditional science instruction where students demonstrate low engagement and weak conceptual mastery. The method employs classroom action research conducted over two cycles with twenty students from SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Utara. Data collection instruments include observation sheets, learning quality questionnaires, and essay-based concept understanding tests. Results indicate that cycle one achieved a learning quality score of 74.17 percent and a concept understanding average of 81.71. Cycle two showed improvement with learning quality reaching 82.34 percent and concept understanding averaging 85.50. Student active participation increased from 65.31 percent to 81.25 percent across cycles. The findings demonstrate that structured group discussion combined with individual accountability through random numbering significantly improves both conceptual grasp and classroom engagement. Teachers should integrate this model into routine science instruction to foster active learning and deeper comprehension of scientific principles.

Abstract

Low student motivation and learning outcomes in science subjects remain significant challenges in schools, particularly when learning processes are still dominated by conventional teacher-centered approaches that do not actively engage students. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Prediction Guide Learning Model on students’ motivation and learning outcomes in science subjects at SMK Negeri 1 Alo’oa during the 2023/2024 academic year. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method through a pretest-posttest control group design. The research subjects consisted of two classes: an experimental class taught using the Prediction Guide model and a control class taught using conventional learning methods. Data were collected through validated learning outcome tests and learning motivation questionnaires, then analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, t-tests, and z-tests. The results showed that the average learning outcomes of students in the experimental class were higher than those in the control class, accompanied by a significant increase in learning motivation. Statistical testing confirmed that the Prediction Guide Learning Model had a significant effect on both student motivation and learning outcomes. These findings affirm that prediction-based active learning can serve as an effective strategy for improving the quality of science education.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the quality of assessment instruments on ecosystem material based on the aspects of validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power of test items. The study employed a quantitative descriptive research method. The research population consisted of all tenth-grade students at SMKN 1 Onohazumba, with the research sample comprising one agricultural major class. The instrument used was a multiple-choice test consisting of 30 items developed according to the learning indicators. Data collection techniques were carried out through learning achievement tests and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using validity testing with the Product Moment correlation formula, reliability testing using the KR-20 formula, difficulty level analysis, and discriminating power analysis of test items. The results showed that all test items were declared valid, with the highest r_xyvalue of 0.506 and the lowest value of 0.368, where all r_xyvalues were greater than the r-table value of 0.367. The reliability test produced a reliability coefficient of 0.844, which falls into the very high category. The difficulty level analysis indicated that all test items were categorized as moderate, with difficulty index values ranging from 0.32 to 0.68. Meanwhile, the discriminating power analysis showed that 20 test items were categorized as good, while 10 test items were categorized as excellent.

Abstract

Learning activities that were still dominated by conventional teaching methods caused students to become passive, less motivated, and experience difficulties in understanding scientific concepts meaningfully. This study aimed to analyze the improvement of learning quality and students’ learning outcomes in Integrated Science through the implementation of a constructivist approach among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Mandrehe Barat during the 2023/2024 academic year. The study was conducted using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through classroom observations, learning achievement tests, learning quality questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The findings revealed that the implementation of the constructivist approach improved the quality of the learning process from 67.06% in Cycle I to 92.62% in Cycle II. Students’ average learning outcomes also increased from 68.76 to 82.27, with learning mastery reaching 90.62%. These findings indicate that the constructivist approach was effective in improving student engagement, conceptual understanding, and learning outcomes in Integrated Science learning.

This study aimed to improve students’ motivation and learning outcomes through the implementation of the Picture and Picture learning model for seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Sitolu Ori in the 2023/2024 academic year. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Research data were collected through observation, learning motivation questionnaires, learning outcome tests, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicated that the implementation of the Picture and Picture learning model improved the quality of the learning process, student participation, learning motivation, and student learning outcomes. The percentage of students’ learning motivation increased from 70.04% in Cycle I to 95.6% in Cycle II. The average student learning outcomes also improved from 70.4 to 84.7, with learning mastery reaching 100%. The findings demonstrated that the use of visual images in Integrated Science learning created a more active, engaging, and meaningful learning environment, which positively influenced student participation and academic achievement.

Teacher-centered learning processes caused students to experience difficulties in constructing conceptual understanding independently, resulting in learning outcomes that had not yet achieved the minimum mastery criteria. This study aimed to improve the quality of the learning process and students’ learning outcomes through the implementation of a constructivist approach. The study was conducted using Classroom Action Research (CAR), consisting of two cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 30 students of class VIII-C at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi in the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, documentation, and learning achievement tests, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings revealed that the implementation of the constructivist approach increased students’ active participation from 62.72% in Cycle I to 89.79% in Cycle II. Students’ average learning outcomes also improved from 65.31 to 82.12, with learning mastery reaching 93.33%. These findings indicated that the constructivist approach was effective in creating a more active, meaningful, and student-centered Integrated Science learning environment.
