Abstract

Purpose of the study: This experimental study investigated the effect of structured heritage site visits on national identity formation among high school students in Pekanbaru City, Indonesia, examining changes in national pride, cultural knowledge, and civic engagement attitudes. Materials and methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 240 high school students (aged 15-17 years) from six schools in Pekanbaru City. Participants were randomly assigned to experimental (n=120) or control (n=120) groups. The experimental group participated in guided visits to three significant Indonesian heritage sites over eight weeks, while the control group continued regular classroom activities. National identity was measured using the National Identity Scale (NIS), Cultural Knowledge Assessment (CKA), and Civic Engagement Questionnaire (CEQ) administered pre- and post-intervention. Results: Significant improvements were observed in the experimental group compared to controls across all measures. National Identity Scale scores increased by 23.4% (p<0.001), Cultural Knowledge Assessment scores improved by 31.2% (p<0.001), and Civic Engagement Questionnaire scores rose by 18.7% (p<0.01). Effect sizes were large for national identity (Cohen's d = 1.24) and cultural knowledge (Cohen's d = 1.67), and moderate for civic engagement (Cohen's d = 0.73). Conclusions: Structured heritage site visits significantly enhance national identity formation among high school students. These findings suggest that experiential learning through heritage tourism can serve as an effective educational intervention for fostering national consciousness and cultural appreciation in adolescents.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The transition to university life presents significant psychological challenges for students, including increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Physical activity has been recognized as a potential intervention for improving mental health outcomes, yet comprehensive understanding of this relationship among Indonesian university students remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity levels and mental health indicators among university students at Sekolah Tinggi Olahraga dan Kesehatan Bina Guna, examining the potential mediating factors and identifying optimal activity patterns for mental health benefits. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 420 students (aged 18-25 years) from Sekolah Tinggi Olahraga dan Kesehatan Bina Guna. Physical activity levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF), while mental health was evaluated using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5). Data were analyzed using correlation analysis, multiple regression, and structural equation modeling. Results: Students with high physical activity levels demonstrated significantly lower depression (M = 8.2, SD = 4.1) and anxiety scores (M = 7.8, SD = 3.9) compared to low-activity students (depression: M = 14.6, SD = 6.2; anxiety: M = 13.4, SD = 5.8; p < 0.001). A moderate positive correlation was found between physical activity and well-being scores (r = 0.64, p < 0.001). Students engaging in ≥150 minutes of moderate-vigorous physical activity weekly showed 40% better mental health outcomes. Conclusions: Physical activity demonstrates a significant inverse relationship with negative mental health indicators and positive association with psychological well-being among university students. These findings support the implementation of structured physical activity programs as preventive mental health interventions in higher education settings.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Environmental health challenges in developing countries significantly impact children's wellbeing, with primary school students being particularly vulnerable to poor hygiene practices and environmental health risks. Environmental education has emerged as a promising intervention strategy to promote healthy behaviors among young learners. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive environmental education program in improving health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among primary school students in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Materials and methods: A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design was employed with 240 students aged 9-11 years from four public primary schools in Kecamatan Perbaungan, Sumatera Utara. The experimental group (n=120) received a 10-week environmental education module integrated into the science curriculum, while the control group (n=120) received standard curriculum instruction. The intervention comprised four components: personal hygiene education, waste management training, clean water and sanitation awareness, and healthy diet promotion. Data were collected using knowledge assessments, behavioral observation checklists, and attitude scales. Results: Significant improvements were observed in the experimental group compared to the control group. Post-intervention knowledge scores increased from 12.3±2.1 to 19.8±1.9 (p<0.001). Positive behavioral changes were documented in handwashing practices (85% vs. 34%), proper waste disposal (78% vs. 41%), and healthy food choices (72% vs. 38%). Attitude scores toward environmental health behaviors improved significantly (4.2±0.6 vs. 2.8±0.7, p<0.001). Conclusions: Environmental education significantly enhances health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among primary school students. Integration of environmental health education into school curricula represents an effective strategy for promoting sustainable healthy behaviors in young populations.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Audit report readability has emerged as a critical factor in financial communication effectiveness, particularly in the healthcare sector where stakeholder decisions carry significant societal implications. The complexity of audit reports can impede stakeholder understanding and decision-making processes. This study examines the influence of board effort, CEO narcissism, and real earnings management on audit report readability in Indonesian healthcare companies. The research aims to understand how corporate governance mechanisms and managerial characteristics affect the clarity and accessibility of financial reporting communications. Materials and methods: The study employs a quantitative approach analyzing 156 firm-year observations from 52 healthcare companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2020-2022. Board effort is measured using board meeting frequency and director expertise diversity. CEO narcissism is assessed through compensation relative to other executives and media visibility metrics. Real earnings management is evaluated using the Roychowdhury (2006) model. Audit report readability is measured using the Flesch Reading Ease Score and Fog Index. Multiple regression analysis with robust standard errors is employed to test the hypotheses. Results: The findings reveal that higher board effort significantly improves audit report readability (β = 0.312, p < 0.01), while CEO narcissism negatively impacts readability (β = -0.287, p < 0.05). Real earnings management shows a significant negative association with audit report readability (β = -0.341, p < 0.01). The model explains 43.7% of the variance in audit report readability. Additional analyses confirm the robustness of these relationships across different sub-periods and alternative measurements. Conclusions: Board effort enhances audit report clarity through improved oversight and communication standards, while CEO narcissism and real earnings management practices deteriorate report readability. These findings suggest that effective corporate governance mechanisms are essential for transparent financial reporting in the healthcare sector.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Parental support and attachment quality are fundamental determinants of youth behavioral adjustment. Understanding these relationships through a behavioral science lens provides critical insights for intervention and prevention strategies. This study examined the relationships between parental support dimensions, attachment styles, and behavioral adjustment outcomes in adolescents, investigating mediating mechanisms through a comprehensive behavioral science framework. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 847 adolescents (ages 12-18, M = 15.2, SD = 1.8) and their primary caregivers. Participants completed validated measures including the Parental Support Scale (PSS), Adult Attachment Interview-Revised (AAI-R), and Youth Behavioral Assessment Inventory (YBAI). Statistical analyses included correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and mediation analysis. Results: Strong positive correlations were found between parental support and secure attachment (r = .72, p < .001) and between secure attachment and positive behavioral adjustment (r = .68, p < .001). Parental emotional support demonstrated the strongest predictive relationship with behavioral outcomes (β = .54, p < .001). Secure attachment partially mediated the relationship between parental support and behavioral adjustment (indirect effect = .31, 95% CI [.26, .37]). Conclusions: Findings confirm that parental support significantly influences youth behavioral adjustment through attachment mechanisms. Secure attachment serves as a crucial mediator, suggesting that interventions targeting parent-child relationships may effectively promote positive youth outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the predictive role of students' knowledge of poultry ingredients and cooking techniques on their main course preparation skills in the context of continental cuisine. A quantitative ex post facto design was employed with 35 eleventh-grade students from the Culinary Arts program at SMKN 3 Kediri, Indonesia, selected via purposive sampling from a population of 152 students. Data were collected using validated multiple-choice tests measuring poultry ingredient knowledge (X1) and cooking technique knowledge (X2), alongside a performance assessment rubric for main course preparation skills (Y). Instrument reliability was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha values of 0.938 and 0.702, respectively. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression using SPSS version 25.0. Both independent variables demonstrated statistically significant partial effects on main course preparation skills (X1: t = 6.308, p < 0.001; X2: t = 5.732, p < 0.001). Simultaneously, the two predictors explained 62.2% of the variance in skill outcomes (Adjusted R² = 0.622; F = 7.548, p < 0.001). Poultry ingredient knowledge (β = 0.426) showed a slightly stronger predictive contribution than cooking technique knowledge (β = 0.386). Poultry ingredient knowledge and cooking technique knowledge are significant predictors of main course preparation skills in culinary vocational students. These findings highlight the critical role of theoretical content mastery in supporting psychomotor skill development and underscore the need for integrated theory-practice curricula in vocational culinary education.
