Abstract

Economic pressures resulting from environmental degradation and structural changes have significantly affected the sustainability of traditional fishing livelihoods in the Nongsa coastal area of Batam. This study investigates the economic adaptation strategies adopted by traditional fishermen in response to declining fish catches, rising fuel prices, and limited government support. A qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews and field observations involving local fishing communities. The findings indicate that coastal households have increasingly diversified their livelihoods, with only 5–10 of approximately 270 households continuing to depend primarily on capture fisheries. Adaptation strategies include the development of floating net cage aquaculture, the provision of marine tourism services, and participation in fishermen’s cooperatives to strengthen collective economic capacity. These strategies have reduced dependence on capture fisheries while creating alternative sources of income and improving community resilience. However, their effectiveness remains constrained by limited institutional support, access to capital, and sustainable coastal management policies. Strengthening cooperative institutions, expanding livelihood diversification, and improving government assistance are therefore essential to enhancing the long-term economic resilience of coastal communities facing environmental and socioeconomic challenges.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a significant role in supporting Indonesia's economic growth. However, many MSMEs have not optimally utilized digital technology as a promotional medium. One of them is Warung Cik Pen, located at Tok Anjang Beach, Nongsa District, Batam City, whose promotional activities relied mainly on word of mouth marketing. This community service program aimed to improve the owner's knowledge and skills in utilizing social media as a digital marketing tool. The program was conducted for 30 days using observation, interviews, socialization, training, mentoring, and evaluation methods. The activities included training on digital marketing, Instagram Business, Facebook Page, WhatsApp Business, Google Maps, and Canva for creating promotional content. The results showed an improvement in the owner's ability to manage social media independently. The outputs included promotional banners, redesigned menus, optimized social media accounts, a WhatsApp Business product catalog, business location registration on Google Maps, and digital promotional content. These outcomes are expected to expand market reach and improve the competitiveness of Warung Cik Pen as a local culinary MSME.

Abstract

Fishermen groups play a strategic role in strengthening the adaptive capacity and productivity of coastal communities facing environmental and socioeconomic changes. This study examines the contribution of fishermen groups to fostering adaptive and productive behaviors among coastal fishing enterprises in Nongsa District, Batam City. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted using field observations, documentation, and in-depth interviews with fishermen group administrators, traditional fishermen, and fisheries extension officers. The findings indicate that fishermen groups function as key community institutions by strengthening social cohesion, disseminating maritime weather forecasts and market information, facilitating access to government assistance and modern fishing equipment, providing training on navigation technology and business management, mediating fishing zone conflicts, and improving marine catch productivity. These institutional functions have enhanced fishermen’s capacity to respond to ecological uncertainty, optimize fishing activities, and diversify livelihood management. The study demonstrates that community-based organizations are essential in building resilience within coastal fisheries by integrating social support, technological innovation, and institutional collaboration. Strengthening fishermen groups through sustained policy support and capacity development is therefore critical to promoting sustainable coastal livelihoods amid increasing environmental and economic pressures.

Abstract

Coastal communities have a close relationship with coastal and marine resources, particularly through fisheries and other economic activities that depend on coastal ecosystems. This study aimed to describe the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities and examine the role of fishing communities in supporting the sustainability of coastal ecosystems in Kampung Melayu, Batam City. The study employed a descriptive research design with a qualitative approach supported by quantitative descriptive data. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The respondents consisted of 10 community members selected purposively, while key informant interviews involved two fishermen and one community leader. The results showed that seven respondents (70%) worked as fishermen, two respondents (20%) worked as seafood traders, and one respondent (10%) had other occupations. The respondents ranged in age from 20 to 55 years, with educational backgrounds ranging from elementary to senior high school. The findings indicate that the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities are closely related to the availability and condition of coastal and marine resources. Community involvement in maintaining coastal ecosystems was reflected in environmental awareness, participation in conservation activities, coastal cleanliness, and support for mangrove preservation. Therefore, sustainable coastal management requires an approach that integrates environmental conservation with the socio-economic interests of local communities. Strengthening environmental education, community participation, alternative livelihood opportunities, and collaboration among local communities, universities, local governments, and other stakeholders is expected to support the long-term sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are important coastal ecosystems that provide ecological, social, and economic benefits to coastal communities. The sustainability of mangrove ecosystems depends not only on planting activities but also on community participation in conservation, maintenance, monitoring, and environmental management. This study aims to describe community participation in coastal conservation through mangrove planting activities in Kampung Melayu, Batam City. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach supported by descriptive quantitative data. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and activity records. The activity involved 15 community participants and resulted in the planting of 50 mangrove seedlings. The activities included mangrove planting, environmental clean-up, and providing information on post-planting mangrove maintenance. The results indicate that community participation was demonstrated through direct involvement in mangrove planting and environmental clean-up activities. The activity also provided an opportunity to increase community awareness regarding the importance of mangrove ecosystems and the need for continued maintenance. However, the success of mangrove restoration cannot be assessed solely based on the number of seedlings planted. Long-term restoration requires continuous maintenance, monitoring of seedling survival, appropriate site selection, environmental education, institutional support, and collaboration among local communities, universities, government institutions, and other stakeholders. Therefore, participatory mangrove planting should be developed as a continuous conservation program that involves communities throughout the planning, implementation, maintenance, monitoring, and evaluation stages.

Abstract

Abstract. Coastal ecosystem sustainability is closely related to the knowledge, awareness, and participation of local communities. Environmental education is an approach that can improve public understanding of coastal ecosystems and encourage participation in conservation activities. This community service activity aimed to increase community knowledge and participation in supporting coastal ecosystem conservation in Kampung Melayu, Batam City. The activity used a descriptive approach supported by pre-test and post-test evaluations, observation, interviews, and documentation. The educational activity involved 15 participants and covered coastal ecosystems, mangrove benefits, waste impacts, waste management, and community roles in coastal conservation. The results showed that participants' knowledge increased from 60% before the activity to 85% after the activity, representing an increase of 25 percentage points. Community participation was demonstrated through direct involvement in conservation activities, including planting 50 mangrove seedlings and conducting environmental clean-up activities. The results indicate that environmental education can increase community knowledge and provide a foundation for participatory conservation actions. Program sustainability requires continuous education, routine monitoring, mangrove maintenance, waste management, and collaboration among communities, universities, government, and other stakeholders.

Abstract

Coastal ecosystems provide important ecological, social, and economic benefits for communities living in coastal areas. However, coastal ecosystems face various pressures caused by environmental degradation, waste accumulation, human activities, and limited public awareness. Higher education institutions can contribute to coastal ecosystem conservation through field-based learning activities that involve students and local communities. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the Field Work Lecture (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL) in supporting coastal ecosystem conservation in Kampung Melayu RW 08, Batam City. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by activity documentation and field observations. Data were collected through observation, documentation, informal interviews, and evaluation of the activities conducted during the KKL program. The evaluation focused on activity planning, implementation, community involvement, environmental education, and potential sustainability of the program. The results indicate that KKL activities provide opportunities for students to apply academic knowledge in real community settings while contributing to environmental awareness and coastal conservation efforts. Community involvement is an important factor in determining the effectiveness and sustainability of conservation activities. However, the implementation of short-term field activities requires follow-up programs, continuous monitoring, and stronger collaboration among universities, communities, and local stakeholders. Therefore, KKL should not only be viewed as an academic activity but also as a participatory learning and community engagement program that can contribute to sustainable coastal ecosystem conservation.
