Abstract

This study aims to determine community participation and identify obstacles in the implementation of waste management policies in Medan Sunggal District, specifically the Pinang Baris area. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants in this study consisted of local residents and Medan City Environmental Agency employees who were deemed to have relevant information related to the issues being studied. The data obtained were then analyzed inductively through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that community participation in the implementation of waste management policies is still relatively low and inconsistent. This is evident in the community's irregular involvement in community-based activities, suboptimal household waste management practices, and low awareness of maintaining environmental cleanliness. Furthermore, the community still tends to mix waste and has not implemented sustainable waste sorting. This situation indicates that public awareness is actually starting to develop, but has not yet been matched by strong habits and commitment in daily practice. Furthermore, this study found several obstacles to the implementation of waste management policies, namely low public awareness, limited supporting facilities such as adequate trash bins, indiscriminate waste disposal, and a lack of public awareness campaigns. Therefore, the successful implementation of waste management policies depends not only on public participation but also requires adequate facilities and a sustained increase in the intensity of education and outreach from the government.

Abstract

Abstract

This community engagement program aims to improve students’ understanding and practice of purity (thaharah) and ethical conduct (adab) through an intensive mentoring program titled “Taharah & Adab Class” at SDN Kutorejo II Pandaan. The main problems addressed are students’ low understanding of proper purification procedures and the decline in ethical behavior in daily interactions. The mentoring method applies a participatory approach that includes preparation, implementation, and intensive assistance stages. The program uses peer tutoring, direct practice at the ablution area, and fun-learning strategies supported by simple media such as daily control cards to monitor students’ consistency. The results show a significant improvement in the cognitive aspect, indicated by an increase in the average score from 56 to 82.6. In addition, there are observable behavioral changes in the affective and psychomotor domains. Students become accustomed to performing ablution correctly, maintaining personal hygiene, and demonstrating more polite behavior in social interactions. Teacher testimonials also confirm improvements in classroom atmosphere, which becomes more orderly and conducive to learning. The implications indicate that a practice-based and habituation-oriented mentoring model is effective in strengthening character education at the primary school level. This program can serve as a reference for developing similar initiatives that integrate religious understanding with the formation of students’ actual behavior.

Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in laboratories is a fundamental aspect in supporting laboratory and research activities at universities, particularly in the field of animal science, which involves potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards. During the digital transition, the complexity of occupational risks has increased alongside the increasingly intensive use of laboratory technology. This community service activity aims to enhance the understanding and awareness of the academic community regarding the implementation of laboratory OSH as a preventive measure against workplace accidents. The methods employed include outreach, training, and the delivery of case-study-based materials online via the Zoom Meeting. A total of 151 participants took part in the activity, comprising students, faculty members, and laboratory staff from various universities. The results of the activity indicate that participants gained a comprehensive understanding of hazard identification, risk control strategies based on the 3E approach, the implementation of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and the importance of near-miss reporting. This training contributes to building a culture of workplace safety and enhancing preparedness for emergency situations in the laboratory.

Abstract

Religious activities play a strategic role in shaping public awareness and social participation; however, in practice, the level of community involvement in Islamic study circles remains relatively low. This community service program aims to enhance awareness and encourage active community participation as agents of da'wah through religious counseling with the theme “Becoming Openers of the Doors of Goodness.” The method employed is a participatory approach consisting of preparation, implementation of counseling, mentoring, and evaluation stages. The activity was conducted at Al-Mujahidin Mosque in Sumbermanjing Kulon Village, involving approximately 150 participants from diverse backgrounds. The results indicate an increase in participation, understanding, and awareness among participants regarding the importance of individual roles in da'wah. A communicative approach grounded in Islamic values proved effective in transforming participants’ mindsets from passive recipients to active and participatory contributors. Furthermore, this activity strengthened the role of the mosque as a center for religious development and community empowerment based on Islamic values.
