Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct Toshihiko Izutsu’s hermeneutical paradigm through a semantic approach to understanding the meaning of du‘ā (prayer) in the Qur’an. The main problem addressed concerns the limitation of previous studies that described Izutsu’s semantic theory without deeply integrating it into the theological and experiential dimensions of Qur’anic meaning. Employing a qualitative-hermeneutical method, this research analyzes the semantic field of du‘ā in relation to other key Qur’anic concepts such as ‘ibādah (worship) and istijābah (divine response). Data were collected through a textual study of the Qur’an and Izutsu’s major works, including God and Man in the Qur’an (1964) and Ethico-Religious Concepts in the Qur’an (1966). The findings reveal that du‘ā, in Izutsu’s framework, is both a linguistic and existential phenomenon representing a reciprocal dialogue between humans and the Divine. When the initial spiritual tension of prayer becomes stabilized and deeply rooted, du‘ā transforms into ‘ibādah—a continuous mode of worship and divine consciousness. This study contributes to the development of a modern Qur’anic exegesis methodology called Qur’anic Semantic Hermeneutics, which integrates linguistic, theological, and experiential dimensions into a coherent interpretative framework.

Abstract

This paper examines the interpretive thinking and hermeneutical approach of Abdullah Ahmed An-Na'im, a contemporary Islamic scholar from Sudan who is widely known as a figure of Islamic legal reform. The discussion focuses on analysing An-Na'im's contextual interpretation method in understanding Sharia law, human rights, and the relationship between religion and the state. Through a critical hermeneutical approach, An-Na'im seeks to reinterpret religious texts so that they remain in line with universal human values and the demands of modernity, without abandoning the normative roots of Islam. This research uses a qualitative method based on a literature study by examining An-Na'im's major works such as Toward an Islamic Reformation (1990) and Islam and the Secular State (2008). The results of the study show that An-Na'im's interpretation is contextual, ethical, and progressive, with an emphasis on moral hermeneutics oriented towards maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah as the basis of universal ethics. He rejects a rigid and textualistic approach to Islamic law and offers a new paradigm that integrates justice, human rights, and pluralism within the framework of a modern secular state.

Abstract

This study discusses the reconstruction of the semantic interpretation method of toshihiko izutsu in order to build a paradigm of interpretation of the Qur'an that is so relevant to the needs of contemporary thinking. The semantic method of izuts is also seen as a very important approach because it is able to reveal the network of interrelated meanings in the language structure in the Qur'an, as well as showing the Qur'an's perspective on reality. However, in this application, it is still very limited to linguistic and philosophical analysis. So far, the izutsu method has also been more focused on language only, while the social situation, human problems are less considered. Therefore, this study tries to develop this method so that it can be used to understand the Qur'an more broadly and in accordance with life today. This study also discusses a new way to more easily understand the Qur'an through a method made by Toshihiko Izutsu, which according to Izutsu, the words contained in the Qur'an are interconnected. Therefore, they cannot be understood in isolation. Because this research is seen from how the method works and also how to improve it so that it is more suitable for use today.

Abstract

The Da'wah method is a method used by a preacher to convey Islamic teachings to the congregation with the aim of inviting them to goodness and truth in accordance with the guidance of the Qur'an and Sunnah. The background of this research is based on the successful da'wah delivery process of Ustadz Andri Malin Batuah in developing the character of the younger generation in the mosque to avoid various delinquent behaviors such as stealing, adultery/dating, and bullying. This method utilizes an appropriate approach or method so that the da'wah message is conveyed and well-received by the congregation. This study aims to determine and analyze Ustadz Andri Malin Batuah's da'wah method in developing the character of the younger generation at the Sumanik Grand Mosque in Tanah Datar Regency. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The primary informant was Ustadz Andri Malin Batuah, and supporting informants included the village head of Sumanik, two mosque administrators, two religious leaders, six mosque youth, and two parents of teenagers.The results of the study indicate that the da'wah methods used by Ustadz Andri to foster the character of the younger generation are: first, al-hikmah (Islamic teachings) delivered wisely, openly, and with compassion toward teenagers through activities such as wirid (recitation of Islamic teachings) for teenagers via virtual videos. Second, al-mauizah hasanah (Islamic teachings) is delivered in the form of lectures, with activities such as self-reflection for teenagers, including advice, guidance, discussion, and motivation. The challenges faced by Ustadz Andri Malin Batuah in da'wah include the influence of social media and popular culture, the lack of interest and encouragement among teenagers in participating in religious activities, the lack of participation and support from community leaders, and the inability of teenagers to understand religion deeply.

Abstract

Tafsir of Sayyid Ahmad Khan represents a significant intellectual contribution to Islamic thought, emphasizing a rational and contextual approach in understanding the Qur’an. This study aims to analyze how Khan interprets Qur’anic verses by taking into account social, historical, and contemporary scientific contexts, making his exegesis relevant and applicable to modern society. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method based on library research, collecting data through the review of literature, books, journal articles, and credible online sources. The analysis reveals three main aspects in Khan’s tafsir: (1) rationality in interpreting divine revelation to align with logic and scientific knowledge, (2) the use of tafsir as a tool for intellectual renewal and apologetics to address external criticism and social challenges, and (3) contextualization to ensure that Qur’anic verses can be applied in modern life without compromising moral and legal values of Islam. Therefore, Khan’s tafsir not only explains the text literally but also provides moral, social, and political guidance that remains relevant, making it a model of integration between revelation and human reason. This study recommends utilizing Khan’s tafsir as a reference for academics, Islamic education practitioners, and the wider Muslim community to understand the Qur’an rationally, critically, and contextually.

Abstract

The phenomenon of bullying in educational institutions, including Islamic boarding schools, is a serious problem that can hinder the educational process, reduce academic achievement, and cause long-term psychological effects on victims. As institutions founded on Islamic values, Islamic boarding schools need a strong normative foundation to build a safe, ethical, and civilised educational culture. This study examines the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad, which explicitly and implicitly emphasise the prohibition of harming others, whether through physical, verbal, or psychological actions. This prohibition is positioned as a theological foundation for the development of strategies to prevent bullying in Islamic boarding schools. Through an in-depth study of relevant hadiths, such as the prohibition of harming one another (lā taḍārrū), the prohibition of insulting, the prohibition of belittling, and the command to guard one's tongue, this study shows that prophetic values substantially support efforts to create a safe and humane pesantren environment. The results of this study are expected to contribute conceptually to the development of character building programmes, a hadith-based anti-bullying curriculum, and the strengthening of the role of caregivers and senior students in building a culture of mutual respect.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of Qiwāmah (husband's leadership) in the household based on the hadith narrated by Imām al-Bukhārī No. 2558. The hadith explains the responsibilities and roles of men as leaders in their families. This study uses a thematic study method on hadiths related to Qiwāmah, with a primary focus on analysing the text, context, and scholars' understanding of the hadith. The approach used is a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis through a review of hadith commentary books, interpretations, and classical and contemporary literature. The results of this study show that the concept of Qiwāmah in Bukhari Hadith No. 2558 is not a form of male superiority over women, but rather an affirmation of the moral, spiritual, and material responsibilities of husbands guided by the values of justice, compassion, and deliberation in making household decisions. In the context of modern life, the meaning of Qiwāmah needs to be understood proportionally as leadership oriented towards cooperation and balance of roles between husband and wife, not domination. Thus, Bukhārī Hadith No. 2558 provides a strong normative basis for the formation of a sakinah family through fair, responsible, and compassionate leadership.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the concept of ghuluw from the perspective of hadith, including its meaning, forms, consequences and impact on religious life, as well as its relevance to the phenomenon of excessive reverence for religious figures today. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach, namely by examining primary sources in the form of hadith books, tafsir, and related scientific literature. The results show that ghuluw etymologically means excessive or beyond the limits in religion, while terminologically it is understood as disproportionate actions in understanding, practising, or glorifying something beyond the provisions of Sharia law. Forms of ghuluw can include the cult of religious figures, group fanaticism, and distortion of the meaning of religious teachings. The consequences of ghuluw include the emergence of doctrinal deviations, socio-religious conflicts, and a weakening of objectivity in religion. In the current context, the understanding of the hadith on ghuluw has significant relevance to the phenomenon of excessive reverence for religious figures, which often has the potential to lead to fanaticism and blind imitation. Therefore, a proportional understanding of the hadiths about ghuluw needs to be instilled to maintain the purity of Islamic teachings and balance in religion.

Abstract

This article discusses the relevance of the hadith isbāl to the phenomenon of outfit scenes in contemporary youth dress culture. The hadith isbāl, which prohibits extending clothing beyond the ankles due to arrogance, has a historical context related to the social practices of pre-Islamic Arab society. On the other hand, outfit skena is a loose and expressive style of dress that has developed in the digital age as a symbol of youth identity, creativity, and social interaction. The research method used is historical to understand the socio-historical context of the hadith, as well as a relevance approach to link the moral values of the hadith with modern fashion practices. The research data included hadiths about isbal, the views of scholars, and the phenomenon of outfit skena recorded on social media, which were analysed descriptively and qualitatively. The results of the study show that the prohibition of isbal is not merely a matter of the length of the fabric, but rather emphasises the intention and arrogance behind the way of dressing. Outfit scenes, even if they are loose and flowing, do not automatically violate Sharia law if they are not motivated by showing off or arrogance. Thus, the moral values of simplicity, sincerity, and humility remain guidelines in modern dress, so that contemporary fashion trends can be contextualised without violating Islamic principles.

Abstract

Fishing is a popular recreational activity among many people. From an Islamic perspective, recreation is permitted as long as it does not violate Sharia law and does not interfere with religious obligations. This study aims to examine fishing from the perspective of hadith, particularly in relation to the prohibition of gambling (maisir) and the dangers of neglecting religious obligations. The research method used is a thematic study (maudhu‘i) by compiling relevant hadiths from major books, then analysing them normatively and contextually. The results of the study show that fishing as a recreational activity is permissible (mubah) if done with good intentions, such as seeking livelihood or healthy entertainment. However, this activity becomes haram if it is used as a form of gambling, as stated in QS. Al-Maidah verse 90 and the hadith narrated by Muslim about the prohibition of games involving betting. In addition, fishing should not neglect religious obligations, especially prayer, which is the pillar of religion as stated in the hadith narrated by Baihaqi. The hadith also emphasises the principles of Islamic recreational ethics, namely maintaining a balanced life, environmental cleanliness, and using recreation as a means of character education. Thus, recreational activities such as fishing can be positive and even part of worship if done in accordance with Islamic manners. Conversely, if it contains elements of gambling or neglects obligations, then such activities are contrary to the principles of Sharia.
