Abstract

This article explores the growing political apathy among Indonesia's young generation, which poses significant challenges to the nation's democratic future. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, the study delves into the lived experiences of Indonesian youth to uncover the factors contributing to their disengagement from political processes. Key factors identified include disillusionment with the political system, the influence of digital media, socio-economic pressures, cultural and familial expectations, and educational shortcomings. The article also discusses the implications of this apathy for Indonesia's democracy and proposes recommendations to re-engage the youth in the political process. These include reforming civic education, leveraging digital media for positive engagement, addressing socio-economic barriers, promoting a culture of political participation, strengthening political institutions, and encouraging youth leadership.

Particular attention is focused on the evaluative function of legal consciousness, with the help of which the activities of law enforcement agencies in general and the police in particular are assessed. Abstract

This paper applies the new concept of the Unified Theory of Politics, which states that any polity with writing can be compared with any other polity with writing, regardless of culture, place, and time. In this paper, we will look at political terms for rulers, particularly those for monarchs, in order both to compare them and to correct equivalences that do not make sense. The most distinct Civilization in the world is Mesoamerica. Its most well-known literate civilization is the Mayan civilization. Martin and Grube are the experts on the political institutions of the Classic Mayans. They are, in fact, the ones who best show the ability to compare Mayan monarchy to other monarchies from across the world. However, they mistranslate a key term, which is the core problem that this paper attempts to solve. Martin and Grube translate “ajaw” and its variants as “king”. The title for a stronger ruler, “kaloomte” and its variants, does not seem to be translated into a particular term by Martin and Grube. Their book is by far the most thorough look at Mayan political regimes, offices, and titles, though Coe and Houston also have something to say about this. The equation of “ajaw” with “king” seems to be uncontested. In order to compare rulers from different cultures, times, and places as the Unified Theory of Politics demands, we need analytically-comparable terms. In this paper, it will be argued that an “ajaw” is not “king”. Instead, an “ajaw” can be described as a legitimate ruler, a sovereign, or a monarch. In working towards this conclusion, this paper will argue that the term “king” should be used sparingly in historical-comparative studies and if possible, in common parlance. Not only is “ajaw” an inappropriate synonym for “king”, but even the term “rex”, which is usually translated as if unproblematic as “king” really should not be so translated. This is true essentially down the line of common equations with “king”. Some of these equations are comparable but never really equate to “king”. This paper uses Aristotle and the Unified Theory Politics to come up with a political taxonomy of monarchies that not only resolves the above problem, but allows for cross-cultural analysis of thirty-seven distinct monarchical offices.

Abstract

Electoral democracy provides an impetus for citizens’ participation and the act of choosing political actors across different democracies. Nigeria had transitioned from one civilian administration to another, beginning in 1999 and lasting until 2023. However, the practice of democracy and the conduct of elections appeared challenged even though the electorate “elects” the candidate of their choice in every election circle. Issues such as the imposition of candidates, violence, rigging, and a decline in voter turnout remain major issues of public concern. Previous studies have shown the challenges or factors affecting the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections, which include electoral rigging, imposition of candidates, violence, and low voter turnout, but they have not sufficiently shown how these factors affect the outcome of the election and the legitimacy of the regime change. This study examined how voter participation influenced the crisis of legitimacy in Nigeria’s fourth republic elections. In conducting this investigation, the perspective of theorists was delved into as the theoretical foundation of this study, relying on a qualitative approach, using secondary data, and analyzing via content and historical analysis. The study found that low voter turnout influenced the legitimacy of the regime change. The paper recommended that the electoral body and civil society organizations should be more involved in voter education in order to encourage voter turnout and confer legitimacy on the regime change.

Abstract

Investigative journalism in Nigeria faces numerous contextual issues that influence its effectiveness and the quality of reporting. These challenges can be categorized into political, economic, social, and professional dimensions. Investigative journalists often face intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests by government authorities. Nigeria's laws, such as the Cybercrime Act, are sometimes used to suppress critical reporting. Despite constitutional guarantees, press freedom is often undermined by restrictive regulations and informal pressures. Investigative journalists working on issues related to corruption, terrorism, or organized crime may face direct threats to their safety. The rise of terrorist groups like Boko Haram in the north and violent criminal groups like bandits has made certain regions particularly dangerous for journalists. Attacks on journalists, kidnappings, and assassinations have become increasingly common, with little accountability for perpetrators. Journalism in Nigeria often faces financial constraints, which limit investigative reporting. Media outlets are frequently underfunded, and journalists may lack the resources to conduct thorough investigations, travel to relevant locations, or access key information. Moreover, media owners may have their own political or economic interests, which may affect editorial independence and discourage deep investigative work. The paper also argues that many media organizations are owned by political elites or business moguls, which can lead to biased reporting and self-censorship to protect the owners' interests. Similarly, journalists working online are vulnerable to hacking, surveillance, and digital harassment.

Abstract

Social media have become important tools for political participation worldwide, and Nigeria is not an exception. With a multi-cultural society like Nigeria, social media provide platforms for citizens to engage in politics, discuss issues, and participate in the political process. The objectives of this research paper were to determine if respondents engage in politics through social media; ascertain the social media platforms through which respondents participate in politics, and determine the nature of their participation through social media. The study was hinged on the Agenda-Setting Theory. It was conducted through a survey of 500 participants selected from Midwestern Nigeria (Delta and Edo States). The findings revealed that social media play a significant role in citizens' participation in politics in Nigeria, and that respondents use various social media platforms to engage in politics. The study also revealed that citizens' participation through social media is mostly limited to discussions, sharing of information, and social advocacy. This study concluded that social media play significant roles in citizens' participation in politics in a multicultural society like Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that there should be the development of online civic education initiatives that provide citizens with comprehensive knowledge about political processes, institutions, and their rights and responsibilities. Also, there is the need for increased education and awareness on the use of social media for political participation. Further, itizens need to be educated on how to use social media platforms for political activities and how to differentiate between credible and fake news.

Abstract

Social media regulations and government censorship in Nigeria have evolved over the years, shaped by the government’s desire to manage the influence of online platforms on public discourse, politics, and social activism. There have been discussions about regulating over-the-Top (OTT) services and, by extension, digital material all over the world. Through mandatory operational licenses or content filtering, regulators continue to try to bring OTT service providers' services inside their regulatory purview in a number of jurisdictions. It has been the same in Nigeria, one of the biggest markets for OTT services worldwide. Despite the fact that Nigerians are using social media more frequently and finding ways to communicate with one another that are less expensive than paying for phone calls, these calls for regulation continue to reverberate. The Nigerian government has expressed concern over the use of social media to commit crimes and support terrorist activities in the nation as a result of the exponential rise in social media usage among Nigerians and the country's escalating level of insecurity. The way that citizens criticize the government on numerous social media sites like Twitter and organize themselves for both online and offline rallies like the EndSARS Protest is even more concerning for the administration. The government's agenda to establish channels for social media and OTT regulations has been centered on these concerns. The paper argued that social media has an impact on society in many different nations throughout the world. Due to its role in amplifying and hastening regime changes in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, the Arab spring became a point of reference in numerous discourses.
