Abstract

This study uses a linear regression model to predict lunar eclipses (red moons) from 2025 to 2050 by integrating scientific, religious, and cultural viewpoints. According to science, the reddish-hued moon during a lunar eclipse is caused by Rayleigh scattering, which happens when Earth's atmosphere blocks off shorter wavelengths. Red moons are associated with eschatological signals in many religious traditions, such as Christianity and Islam. However, in some civilizations, such as Ethiopian, Egyptian, and Jewish, the red moon has important spiritual and cultural significance. The forecasting model employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression based on past lunar eclipse data. With an R-squared value of 0.999 and an adjusted R-squared of 0.999, the model produced a precise fit that showed almost perfect agreement between the observed and anticipated eclipse timings. The significance of the model is validated by the F-statistic of 24,800 and the p-value of 1.49e-41. With a t-value of 157.48 and a p-value of 0.000, the slope coefficient of 359.9 days per year closely matches the established lunar cycle, demonstrating the cycle's statistical significance. The Durbin-Watson statistic (1.704), one of the diagnostic tests, shows no evidence of considerable autocorrelation. Culturally speaking, lunar eclipses have been interpreted as prophecies or occasions for rites in countries like Ethiopia and Egypt and among Arab and Jewish populations. The model's predictive power for eclipses in the future provides important information for scientific and cultural purposes.

Abstract

In Ethiopia, breast cancer is the primary cause of death and the most common cancer among women worldwide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how well mammography works for early breast cancer identification in women between the ages of 40 and 60. The study, conducted in Addis Ababa between April 20 and May 20, 2023, examined the opinions of 45 female patients who were purposefully selected to assess their knowledge of breast cancer and clinical breast examinations (CBE). The study combined primary and secondary sources in a quantitative research design. Women had CBE administered by a doctor, and then they had a mammogram to assess its efficacy in detecting breast cancer early. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique from St. Paul's Hospital, focusing on breast cancer patients who were receiving follow-up care and treatment at the facility. Data was collected through experiments and surveys, and descriptive statistical analysis was conducted using Excel and STATA software. The mean age of the 45 women who were screened was 51.02 years. 84.44% of participants had normal CBE results, while 73.33% of the women had negative mammogram results for breast cancer. Mammography is more useful for the early identification of breast cancer than CBE since it discovers more cases of the disease. The study's results, however, are constrained by its small sample size and narrow age range, which calls for more extensive and varied population-based research. The study's results, however, are constrained by its small sample size and narrow age range, which calls for more extensive and different population-based research. According to the study findings, 73.33% of respondents are not formally educated. It is a noteworthy discovery since it implies that a sizable portion of the population could not have access to or a chance to pursue an education.

Abstract

This essay explores the interdisciplinary nature of theatre studies, focusing on integrating anthropological and historiographical research in the discipline. It examines how these approaches contribute to a deeper understanding of theatre as both a cultural and historical artefact. The essay begins by discussing the role of ethnography in theatre, highlighting its ability to uncover the cultural contexts and lived experiences embedded in performances. It also delves into cultural performance theory, emphasizing how theatre acts as a form of social commentary and creates cultural norms. Historiographically, the essay considers theatre as a historical text that reflects the political, social, and cultural climates of its time. It also addresses revisionist historiography, which seeks to challenge traditional narratives and bring marginalized voices to the forefront of theatrical history. Additionally, the importance of archival research is explored, particularly in preserving the ephemeral nature of performances. The intersections between anthropological and historiographical approaches are discussed, revealing how these methodologies complement each other in constructing a comprehensive narrative of theatre's role in society. The essay concludes by asserting that these interdisciplinary approaches are essential for uncovering the rich layers of meaning within performances, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse understanding of theatre history. This research underscores the importance of context in theatrical analysis and the role of theatre in shaping and reflecting humans.

Abstract

The portrayal of elderly characters in Nollywood movies can significantly shape public attitudes toward the aged in Western Nigeria, given the prominent role of Nollywood in Nigerian culture. Nollywood has a powerful influence on shaping societal views on aging in Western Nigeria. Portrayals that emphasize respect, wisdom, and positive aging can help foster supportive and respectful attitudes toward the elderly, while negative stereotypes can perpetuate ageism. The objectives of the paper are to examine the representation of the elderly in films and the common themes in Nollywood movies. This paper adopted the Representation Theory. The theory explains how stereotypical representations of the elderly in films are done. Certain ideologies or viewpoints which may be considered ageist against the elderly are sometimes portrayed in movies. Since media contributes to the creation and reinforcement of stereotypes, an application of this theory informs the intention to use in-depth interview to interact with film makers of the need to make movies which are anti-stereotypical representations of ageing process and the aged. The paper is a conceptual paper, which utilises secondary data based on the existing literature like journal articles, textbooks and online materials. The paper argues that in the traditional African societies the elderly are also revered. Aged members of a community are seen as culture-bearers, philosophers, professors and visionaries. The traditional Nigerian society is not left in this regard. The African world view regards old age as, reward to those who are just, chaste, kind, charitable, and upright in their doing with others. No wonder, the old people were usually regarded as living ancestors.

Abstract

Since ancient times, auroras have fascinated science and religion because of their amazing natural displays in Earth's upper atmosphere. With an emphasis on the recombination and diffusion of ions during auroral events, this study investigates the ionospheric processes in the E-region and syndicates the results with spiritual and cultural interpretations. The study sought to understand the scientific and spiritual significance of these processes by examining changes in ion concentrations with altitude and time. Through analytical and numerical simulations, the study found that during the day, A+ ion recombination is more active between 80 and 120 km altitude, with diffusion from 1e6 to 2.4 × 105 cm-3. Recombination rates for A+ ions rise at night, but those for B atoms drop, especially in the region between 100 and 120 kilometers above sea level. These findings are important for comprehending how space weather affects navigation and communication systems. Spiritually speaking, auroras are said to be cosmic occurrences that represent heavenly messages or ancestors' souls. The amalgamation of scientific analysis and cultural narratives yields a more comprehensive and multifaceted comprehension of auroral events. The study concludes that integrating spiritual viewpoints with scientific investigation improves our understanding of natural occurrences. To preserve indigenous tribes' perceptions of auroras, recommendations include fostering interdisciplinary research, introducing cultural narratives into educational initiatives, and interacting with them.

Abstract

This study explores the Igbo trade apprenticeship system as an indigenous business model, using a Netflix film, Afamefuna - An Nwa-Boi Story (2024) as a primary source. The thrust is to examine how film communicates ideology by discussing the tenets of the trade apprenticeship system among the south-east people of Nigeria called Ndigbo. Methodologically, it makes use of focus group discussions, in-depth interview and textual analysis to investigate the objectives of the study. The findings indicate film as a veritable tool in creating awareness and promoting the trade apprenticeship model as a panacea to unemployment, especially among the young people of Nigeria, most of who suffer in idleness after graduation from school because there is no job provided by the government for them. Thus, while it is recommended that the Nigerian government encourages the apprenticeship model by replicating it across her numerous agencies as a way of training young people in skills, the main thesis of this paper is that Nollywood filmmakers ought to start doing more of service-oriented movies that beyond entertainment values can point to answers that viewers look out for in life as is the case with Afamefuna that highlights the nwa-boi model for business minded people.

Abstract

The study of popular culture and media messages on public transport in Nigeria reveals an intriguing intersection between mass communication, social behavior, and the broader cultural dynamics of the country. Public transport systems in Nigeria, ranging from buses (Danfo), taxis, to larger interstate vehicles (like the ones operated by companies such as Peace Mass Transit), serve as crucial spaces where various media messages, social trends, and cultural practices converge. The development of cars has radically transformed and revolutionized road transport system and affected the medium, channel, pattern and direction of mass communication, especially in Africa, Asia, North America, and South America where public transport vehicles are used as channels of advertisement, cultural communication, identity construction, and social reflection. This paper utilised secondary data to interrogate the trends and dynamics of popular culture and media messages on public transport literature in Nigeria. The paper adopted the Cultural Populism Theory. The theory represents activists’ opposition to the ways in which dominant forces in capitalist society shape people’s behaviour and ways of thinking. The literature on the trends and dynamics of popular culture and media messages on public transport in Nigeria demonstrates the importance of this seemingly mundane space as a site of cultural production, socialization, and political discourse.

Abstract

The influence of Nollywood films on the representation of the elderly in Nigeria is a topic of significant cultural and social importance. Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, is one of the largest and most prolific film industries in the world. With its diverse range of genres, Nollywood films have a profound impact on shaping societal views, especially concerning the elderly. Nollywood films often portray elderly characters in roles that reflect traditional Nigerian values. These films typically show older individuals as wise, respected members of the community, who provide guidance and spiritual leadership to younger generations. In many cases, elders are depicted as the moral compass of the family, helping to resolve conflicts and uphold traditional values. However, there is also a contrasting portrayal where the elderly people are seen as weak, helpless, or sometimes even villainous. Some films depict elderly characters as scheming or greedy, particularly in family dynamics involving inheritance or power struggles. This dual representation can influence the perception of the elderly, either affirming their revered status or challenging it. Nollywood films often highlight issues related to aging, such as health problems, physical decline, and the challenges of growing old in a rapidly changing society. While these depictions can raise awareness about the needs and struggles of the elderly, they sometimes present negative stereotypes, such as portraying elderly people as burdens on the family or society. This can shape how younger generations view aging, often emphasizing fear or avoidance of growing old.
