Abstract

The foundational ethos of a nation-state is inextricably linked with long-standing cultural tenets, often encapsulated in a codified philosophy that predates the state's formal establishment. These traditional values serve as an authoritative framework for addressing complex societal issues. Specifically, in the Indonesian context, there is a discernible challenge characterized by a multifaceted set of issues and inherent complexities in devising effective solutions. It is posited that these dilemmas can be ameliorated by adhering to the country's ingrained philosophical and traditional mores. If such a philosophy is rooted in religious principles, it is only through the application of these religious teachings that the veracity of traditional customs can be affirmed. In this regard, Islam is particularly salient as a religion of 'rahmatan lil'alamin,' possessing a universal applicability that encompasses all facets of human existence. The impetus for this research lies in its potential to catalyze a reorientation of societal perspectives, specifically among the Batak tribe. The objective is to align communal practices, including architectural and infrastructural developments, with the precepts of the Poda Na Lima philosophy. This alignment will be achieved by first establishing the points of congruence between the Poda Na Lima philosophy and the tribe’s religious and ethnic identity as Muslims and Bataks, respectively. To achieve this, the study employs qualitative methodologies guided by critical discourse analysis. The results unequivocally indicate that the quintessential principles enshrined in the Poda Na Lima philosophy are not merely instructive but also possess significant intrinsic value. Moreover, the entirety of the Poda Na Lima's content is congruent with and complementary to, Islamic doctrine.

Abstract

The extended journey towards both economic and political modernization within Indonesia's democratic framework has led to a transformation of its society into an industrialized community. However, this change has largely failed to boost the economic prospects of the general populace. Moreover, the turbulent nature of Indonesia's democratic evolution has not aligned well with the principles of open dialogue and inclusive discussion, as advocated by its foundational philosophy, Pancasila. Over the last 15 years, the amalgamation of development-oriented politics and political liberalization has exerted a detrimental impact on the nation's unique cultural identity and wisdom. The upcoming research aims to revisit and revitalize the indigenous political ideologies and social values held by various ethnic groups and community structures in Indonesia. The objective is to shed light on the unexplored potential of social capital to enhance the quality of the country's democratic governance. The research will focus on two main categories for its case study: Firstly, it will delve into ethnic groups, concentrating specifically on the Wajo and Minang communities; Secondly, it will study communities that are active in a number of urban parks across the Java region. The study is rooted in the theoretical framework of consultative democracy and will utilize qualitative research methods interpreted through the lens of political anthropology to obtain nuanced, context-rich insights.

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the structure of traditional marriage in the Yoruba culture and to explore how issues of bride price, virginity and fertility are used to reinforce male dominance. In the Yoruba culture, marriage is seen as a very important institution and it is regarded as a union between two families. Traditionally, the groom's family is responsible for providing a bride price to the bride's family. Bride price is seen as a bargaining chip, conferring rights to the husband to control the wife while also legitimizing her place in his family. Virginity is associated with purity and good character, with faithfulness to the husband being prerequisite for a good marriage. Fertility is seen as a duty of the wife and necessary for the continuity of the husband’s lineage. Failure to fulfil these roles was seen as grounds for divorce or repudiation. The paper adopts critical and reflective methods to explain male dominance as related to the issues of bride price, virginity and fertility in Yoruba traditional marriage and concludes that the traditional marriage practices that dictate these values are a source of inequality and oppression that reinforces male dominance in Yoruba society.
