Abstract

Interpreting is a much more intricate process than translation. It involves expertise in linguistic and non-linguistic factors, such as cross-cultural comprehension. This article presents the results of a study conducted in a university classroom, specifically focusing on using Folklore in consecutive interpreting activities as a pedagogical tool among interpreting students. This study uses content analysis to explore untranslatable cultural terms in Folklore, particularly in evaluating students' interpreting skills. Moreover, the researchers examine moral lessons and untranslatable terms through student discussions. Students of English Department students participated in this study, chosen based their interpreting assessment. The findings are innovative in that Folklore serves as a pedagogical tool that effectively engages with consecutive interpreting activities by bridging practical experiences with theoretical concepts. This study's findings are novel in that Folklore is a feature of pragmatic teacher-student interaction and a pedagogical tool used to engage with consecutive interpreting students to relate practical experience to theoretical constructs, which spoken language interpreter educators could consider if culturally appropriate. Spoken language interpreter educators should also consider incorporating Folklore as an appropriate cultural approach to enhance the learning experience for their students.

Abstract

International and national entities like UNESCO, the Malagasy Cultural Heritage Policy Framework (CPPC), and the Malagasy Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC) advocate for leveraging cultural heritage as a significant catalyst for sustainable development. They acknowledge the historical, cultural, environmental, and touristic wealth intertwined with cultural heritage within the framework of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for the populace. This study aims to illustrate how cultural heritage can genuinely contribute to enhancing and advancing education towards sustainable development. It scrutinizes the potential correlation between artifacts and heritage assets of cultural sites and the socio-cultural, environmental, and economic facets of sustainable development, with a focal point on the Ambohimanga hill in the Analamanga region. Findings reveal that cultural sites embody traits that align with the goals of ESD, via their tangible and intangible heritage assets. They facilitate a heightened consciousness of our lineage and our cultural and social identity, thereby ensuring the perpetuation of our heritage for posterity. Moreover, they play a role in conserving the environment and biodiversity by housing endemic and medicinal fauna and flora, thus safeguarding their existence for future generations. Furthermore, they spur local and national economic growth by drawing tourists, generating revenue, and fostering employment opportunities. Propagating education about cultural heritage through cultural site visits presents a promising avenue as a component of ESD.

Abstract

Seven is significant in many spheres of human cognition, culture, and science; it captivates the imagination and has deep symbolic meaning in many cultures and historical periods. This study traced the significance of the number seven in religious traditions, cultural behaviors, and scientific occurrences to examine the multidimensional nature of this number. Seven is a hallowed number in religious contexts, signifying spiritual fulfillment, divine wholeness, and perfection. The number seven is found in many religious stories and rites, representing cosmic harmony and divine order. It includes the seven days of creation in Judeo-Christian texts and the seven heavens in Islamic cosmology. It indicates cyclicality, renewal, and transition and can be found in mythology, folklore, and other cultural expressions. The number seven enhances human expression and creativity in literature, music, and the art of narrative structure, artistic composition, and aesthetic beauty. Seven appears throughout astronomical events, mathematical formulas, and natural cycles, exposing patterns and structures that control the universe through scientific investigation. The number seven highlights the mathematical beauty and complexity of the natural world. It includes the seven hues of the rainbow and the seven musical notes in the diatonic scale. This study emphasized how numerical symbolism in human culture and civilization continues to be fascinating and resonate by examining the significance of seven throughout religious, cultural, and scientific areas. Our understanding of numbers that affect our perceptions, beliefs, and experiences is deepened via interdisciplinary research and discussion, which inspires us to consider the mysteries of existence and the interconnectedness of all things.

Abstract

This article critically examines Darwin's theory of human origins through a phenomenological lens, highlighting perceived misconceptions embedded within the narrative of evolution. While Darwin's theory, emphasizing natural selection and biological processes, has profoundly influenced scientific thought, it has also faced significant scrutiny for its reductionist approach to human existence. This study explores how the theory often overlooks humanity's spiritual, cultural, and moral dimensions, reducing humans to mere biological entities. By analyzing phenomenological critiques and participant narratives, the article reveals the limitations of Darwinian evolution in fully explaining human consciousness, identity, and purpose. It also discusses the cultural and ethical implications of applying Darwinian principles to society, particularly concerning social inequality and moral relativism. The study concludes by advocating for integrative frameworks that combine scientific understanding with humanistic values, encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue and alternative perspectives on human origins.

Abstract

The long process of economic modernization and political democracy in Indonesia has changed the face of Indonesian society, making it more focused on the industrial sector but has still not succeeded in moving the people's economic sector effectively. However, the dynamics of democratic politics in Indonesia are still far from the ideal mandated by the Pancasila deliberative values. Recent political and economic changes, such as development policies that pay less attention to local wisdom and increasingly widespread political liberalization, have had a negative impact on Indonesia's cultural diversity and identity. This research aims to rebuild understanding of local knowledge and political values held by various ethnic groups and communities in Indonesia, with the hope of discovering potential social capital that can be used to improve democratic political practices. The focus of this research is divided into two main aspects: first, analysis of ethnic groups with an emphasis on the Wajo and Minang tribes, and second, a review of several communities living in city parks on the island of Java. The theoretical approach applied is consultative democracy theory, which focuses on the importance of deliberation in the political decision-making process. Within the framework of political anthropology, this research is considered a case study that aims to understand more deeply the dynamics of local politics, as well as the cultural values contained therein. The research method used is qualitative-interpretive, which allows researchers to explore hidden meanings and understandings in the views and experiences of research subjects. Thus, it is hoped that this research will make an important contribution in strengthening the cultural and social foundations for more inclusive and sustainable democratic political practices in Indonesia

Abstract

The essence of a nation's identity, rooted in its traditional values and philosophy, existed before the country was formed as a sovereign entity. This intrinsic connection with tradition forms the basic principles that form the foundation of nation building. Indonesia, like other countries, faces a number of challenges, often facing complexity and distortion in finding solutions to each unique situation. However, it is believed that by utilizing the philosophical foundations and traditional values inherent in its culture, Indonesia can navigate and resolve these problems effectively. The essence of this approach is the recognition of the important role of philosophy in guiding societal norms and behavior. In particular, the adoption of religious values, such as those contained in Islam, has great potential to ground society in the eternal truths represented in traditional customs. Islam, characterized by its universal nature as a religion of “rahmatan lil’alamin” (mercy for all nature), offers a comprehensive framework that can address various aspects of human existence. This study emphasizes the importance of revitalizing the life orientation of the community, especially the Batak tribe, by aligning it with the principles contained in the Poda Na Lima philosophy. By explaining the relationship between their identities as Muslim and Batak, individuals can bring greater resonance and authenticity to the structures and infrastructure of their society. Using a qualitative approach rooted in critical discourse analysis, this research aims to reveal the complex relationship between traditional philosophy, religious teachings, and contemporary challenges. Through examination of the Poda Na Lima framework, which consists of five basic principles, it becomes clear that these principles contain deep wisdom and serve as a guide to community behavior.

Abstract

We investigate the intriguing phenomenon of shooting stars, looking at how they behave at greater altitudes and how they eventually disintegrate. Shooting stars fly through the atmosphere and change, shedding mass as they ignite and become thermal energy. This process ends with their disappearance, having traveled around 45.34 kilometers. We examine their journey using displacement vectors and find a pattern that may be expressed as r=33.5i−15.0j. In addition, the study of the probability distribution of broken mass, providing insights into the complex dynamics of meteorites. The results show that meteorites can be classified into some groups, including L to L5, L6, and H to H4, H6, and CM2. These groups have different compositions and percentages. Notably, our study finds that failed meteorites are more common in equatorial locations, indicating the presence of underlying environmental influences. Our data reveals notable variations in meteorite classifications through time when looking at temporal trends. Peak events of some classes, like H, L, and LL, align with particular periods, providing information about the temporal dynamics of astronomical phenomena. Because historical accounts frequently conflate celestial phenomena with cultural and religious beliefs, these data raise questions about how culture and religion impact our understanding of these cosmic events. Our study highlights the multifaceted character of celestial occurrences by fusing scientific investigation with cultural and religious viewpoints. This encourages more research at the nexus of science, culture, and spirituality.
