Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of personalized tutoring methods in enhancing speaking skills among students of Thomas Carr College, particularly in preparing for the VCE Indonesian language exam. The main goal of this research is to assess how tailored lesson plans and one-on-one tutoring contribute to improving fluency, confidence, and critical thinking in spoken Indonesian. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, the study employs observation, feedback, and interaction analysis to evaluate the students’ performance. The findings reveal that individualized tutoring significantly boosts students’ conversational abilities, making them more confident in their oral examinations. Additionally, the study highlights the value of incorporating culturally relevant materials and real-life scenarios into language instruction, which enhances students’ connection to the language and its practical applications. This research emphasizes the role of teaching assistants in bridging language gaps and providing an immersive learning experience.

Abstract

In the context of private tutoring, innovative learning approaches are crucial for enhancing students' engagement and academic success. This study explores the application of educational games in mathematics learning within private tutoring sessions. Educational games, which combine elements of play with educational content, offer a more engaging and personalized method of instruction. The study focuses on the implementation of various game models, such as Snakes and Ladders, Ludo, Math Cards, and Trimino, to improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts in private settings. The findings demonstrate that these games can create a relaxed, enjoyable learning atmosphere, which increases student motivation, enhances their understanding, and boosts their interest in learning mathematics. By incorporating interactive elements, educational games support the development of critical mathematical skills, including numeracy, logical thinking, and problem-solving. Furthermore, these games foster active participation, which is essential for sustaining student engagement, particularly in one-on-one tutoring environments. Through the use of games, private tutors can tailor learning experiences to meet the individual needs of students, providing a more adaptive and effective educational experience.

Abstract

Service Learning (SL) has long been utilized in educational settings to foster social responsibility and community engagement among students. However, without a critical framework, SL often remains a charitable activity that perpetuates unequal power dynamics between students and the communities they serve. This study examines how the concept of critical consciousness, or conscientization, can transform SL from a charitable model to one focused on empowerment and social change. Through a theoretical analysis of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, the study argues that SL must move beyond providing services to addressing the root causes of societal issues. The study proposes a three-stage SL framework: deconstructing assumptions, engaging in authentic dialogue, and implementing praxis through problem-posing methodology. The findings emphasize that by integrating critical consciousness, SL can shift from merely addressing symptoms to challenging underlying social injustices. This transformation not only empowers both students and communities but also creates sustainable change through collaborative problem-solving. The study concludes that critical consciousness is essential for reshaping SL into a tool for social justice, where the relationship between students and communities is built on mutual respect, shared learning, and long-term engagement.

Abstract

The physics laboratory plays an essential role in science learning as it supports experiments that enhance students’ conceptual understanding and learning interest. This study aimed to analyze the standardization level of the physics laboratory at SMA Negeri 1 Turi and its relationship with the learning interest of grade X and XI students. A descriptive method with a mixed-methods approach using an Explanatory Sequential design was employed through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that laboratory infrastructure (90%) and facilities (87%) were categorized as very good, while personnel (33%) were lacking and management (62.7%) was only sufficient. Laboratory implementation in learning scored (67.5%) in the good category, but its use as an assessment tool was not optimal. Questionnaires and interviews indicated that practicum activities increased students’ enthusiasm, although limited personnel and weak management made them irregular. Thus, the physics laboratory at SMA Negeri 1 Turi is very good in infrastructure and facilities but requires improvement in personnel and management to effectively support students’ learning interest.Keywords: laboratory standardization; management; learning interest; physics

Abstract

In the digital age, educational technology plays a critical role in enhancing students' learning experiences, particularly in the domain of reading comprehension. This study aims to determine the extent to which an artificial intelligence (AI)-based reading platform can enhance the reading comprehension skills of sixth-grade students at the Elementary School of 2 Waluyorejo, Kebumen. A quasi-experimental design was employed, wherein a single group of 25 students was administered a pre-test and post-test. Over a period of 4 weeks, students engaged in reading practice activities using the AI platform, which provided leveled reading materials, comprehension exercises, and automated feedback. The results, analyzed through paired-samples t-tests, revealed a significant improvement in reading scores, with an average increase of 14.2 points and a p-value < 0.001. The large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.86) underscores the substantial impact of AI use on students' literacy development. These findings suggest that AI technology offers an effective, personalized approach to enhancing reading comprehension skills in elementary school students
