Abstract

This study aims to describe the topics Chinese students select in the learning of Indonesian language for foreign speakers (ILFS) for the credit transfer program atYogyakarta State University (YSU). The research subjects were Chinese students joiningthe credit transfer program at YSU. The data were collected through questionnaires,interviews, and documentation. The findings show that in general Chinese students likethe topic of tourism/recreation. For the writing skill, most of them like the topic of tourism/recreation. For the reading skill, they like the topics of foods, tourism, and entertainment.For the listening and speaking skills, they like the topic of entertainment. The reasons forthe topic selection include, among others, beautiful Indonesian geography and nature,curiosity about tourist attractions in Indonesia, varieties of Indonesian foods, differencesbetween Indonesian and Chinese cultures, and the two countries’ economic development.For them, the topics they like facilitate their Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

This study describes and compares euphemisms in Indonesian and Mandarin. The research is qualitative and applies a contrastive approach. Data was collected by listening and taking notes and the analysis was conducted by comparative-contrastive description. The results show that there are fourteen realms in comparing Indonesian and Mandarin euphemisms. Further, euphemisms manifest themselves in words, terms, phrases and clauses in these two languages. Euphemisms are used to add politeness and promote harmony in communication – perks of using euphemisms include conflict-mitigation and corroboration of one’s cultural identity. Understanding euphemisms helps foreign students speak better Indonesian in keeping with their own cultural framework.

Abstract

Abstract:  This action research study aimed at improving students ~skills in reading comprehension and rhetoric speaking through mind-mapping strategies. The study was conducted at SD Muhammadiyah Purwodiningratan2 Yogyakarta. The subjects were 29 students in the VIa class consisting of 17 boys and 12 girls. Data were gathered by the use of intensive observations,questionnaires, and interviews. The study was conducted in two cycles. The results showed that the application of mind-mapping strategies in Bahasa Indonesia teaching-learning process, could improve students' speaking and reading skills".  Students were able to comprehend the passage  better and perform rhetorical speaking morefluently. Similarly, students' speaking skills in both language and non-language aspects improved significantly.Keywords: reading   comprehension,   rhetoric   speaking,   mind   mapping strategy,  silent  reading,  oral  reading,  communicative  language  skills,. motivation, reading texts

Abstract

This study is aimed at improving the process of learning Indonesian, especiallythe vocabulary, by means of the feature analysis strategy as an appropriate strategy tomake students active and interactive in the learning process so that their vocabularymastery and, in turn, their communicative competence can improve.The subjects of the study were the second year students of Marketing StudyProgram, Vocational High School Abdi Negara Muntilan, Magelang. The steps in thestudy included problem identification, research design making, action, observation,and reflection. All were carried out in three cycles, each of which consisted of threeactions. The research data were both quantitative and qualitative. All participantswere involved in the data analysis to meet the criteria of data suitability comprisingthe democratic, process, and dialogic validity.The research findings show that the feature analysis strategy in the vocabularylearning can improve (1) students’ activity, 2) their interaction, and 3) their vocabularymastery. The various activities and the optimum interaction among students provethat their communicative competence is better.Key words: feature analysis strategy, vocabulary, activities, interaction

Abstract

Multicultural in Indonesia becomes a portrait of our culturally rich country from its diverse community. It grows to be a demand in the education world to give a good understanding about multiculturalism to Indonesian people. One of the media that can be applied here is poetry learning. Poetry learning which is based on multiculturalism can be applied in various models. One of the innovations in poetry learning containing multicultural education is “cipit baru”. It involves the steps of before, in middle of, and after the poetry creation. It uses thinking approach and is based on problems. The problem presented is related to multiculturalism. This model is intended to be an alternative way in delivering the poetry learning easily and fun and contains multicultural education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the existence of folktales and the determinant factors that affect it. This research uses a qualitative method of an ethnography type . The method of the data collection is done by observations and interview techniques; moreover, the data were analyzed by a qualitative technique . The validity of data is done by source, method, and theory triangulation techniques . The results of this research indicate that there are several folktales owning high-existence in the society of Bejiharjo Village, Karangmojo, Gunungkidul . The folktales which thrive in this village are a legend and a myth as Tradisi Bersih Kali, Legenda Goa Pindul, Tragedi Kali Semilih, Asal-usul Goa Sriti, Legenda Telaga Wilis, dan Sejarah Padukuhan Grogol. The existence can be seen as the clean ritual of the river which in its implementation refers to the folktales’ values of clean river tradition . Additionally, the folktales are also stated in the inscription on the t-shirts that are sold around the tourist attractions in Goa Pindul. The existence is influenced by internal and external factors. The internal factors are (1) the belief system of the society and (2) the presence of the elders and the traditional authorities in the Bejiharjo Village, while the external factors are (1) the historical relationship between the Sultan Palace of Yogyakarta and the Bejiharjo communities and (2) the high interest of tourists in Bejiharjo Village .

Abstract

Literature and society are closely connected. Literature arises, grows, and thrives in the society. One of the examples is a folktale which exists as one of the literary works that contain many messages. Bejiharjo Village located in Gunungkidul subdistrict, the special region of Yogyakarta, possesses a lot of folktales describing its indigenous traditions. The local indigenous traditions reflect moral values held by the society. One of the moral values is about ecology. The Bejiharjo’s folktales related to the environment are Asal – usul Bersih Kali, Asal – usul Goa Sriti, and Tragedy Kali Semilih. These traditions and stories have proven that the people still preserve and cling to their culture. Moreover, it also can be utilised as a means of ecological education for the society. This study discusses folktales contained environmental which can be used as a good carrier of messages in order to maintain the natural surroundings. Moreover, through these folk tales, people are made aware of the important existence of the environment in human lives. Then, the traditions are not only to be followed, but also to be understood its meaning through the folktales. The value of ecological education that is contained in the three folk tales are related to deforestation, preservation of forest ecosystems, and due to the destruction of springs. The ecological education can be carried out in the form of oral storytelling, providing reading materials and increasing interest of reading, and the preservation of the traditions associated with the folktale. This education involves all members of society from children, youths, and adults. Learning about nature can be carried out by understanding the variety of folk tales with an environmental theme.

Abstract

 This study includes a qualitative descriptive study that aims to explore the folklore of Kampung Pitu using a tourism literature approach. This approach focuses on the study of the phenomena of literary works, writers, literary festivals, and folklore that make a real contribution to the development of tourism. The data of this research are in the form of sentences in the folklore that developed in Pitu Village. Data collection techniques using interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques, namely reduction, presentation, and dra-wing conclusions. The results showed that (1) the folklore in Kampung Pitu consists of the legend of the origin of Kampung Pitu, the myth of Telaga Guyangan, and the myth of Rasulan; (2) each story has an appeal in rules/laws, stories, and rituals; (3) developing folklore has the potential to become a tourist area branding. This branding needs to be supported by the metamorphosis of folklore into theatrical performances, ballet, short films, folklore books, or other narrative forms that can be used as promotions.Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi cerita rakyat Kampung Pitu menggunakan pendekatan sastra pariwisata. Pendekatan ini memfokuskan kajian pada fenomena karya sastra, sastrawan, festival sastra, dan cerita rakyat yang memberikan sumbangan nyata dalam perkembangan kepariwisataan. Data penelitian ini berupa kalimat dalam cerita rakyat yang berkembang di Kampung Pitu. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data, yaitu reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan simpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) cerita rakyat di Kampung Pitu terdiri atas Legenda asal-usul Kampung Pitu, mite Telaga Guyangan, dan mite Rasulan; (2) masing-masing cerita memiliki daya tarik dalam aturan/hukum, cerita, dan ritual; (3) cerita rakyat yang berkembang berpotensi untuk menjadi branding kawasan wisata. Branding ini perlu didukung oleh metamorfosis cerita rakyat menjadi pertunjukkan teater, sendratari, film pendek, buku cerita rakyat, atau bentuk narasi lain yang dapat digunakan sebagai promosi.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mengetahui perbedaan pembelajaran menulis teks anekdot siswa pada kelas yang menggunakan media film pendek dan yang tidak, (2) membuktikan keefektifan penggunaan media film pendek dalam pembelajaran menulis teks anekdot siswa kelas X SMA. Desain  penelitian ini adalah kuasi eksperimen. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas X yang terdiri atas 8 kelas. Sampel penelitian ini adalah kelas X IPA 2 (kelas kontrol) dan kelas X IPA 4 (kelas eksperimen) yang ditentungan dengan teknik simple random sampling. Data diperoleh dari tes pada saat pretest dan posttest. Analisis data pada penelitian ini adalah dengan menggunakan uji-t. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara keterampilan menulis teks anekdot siswakelas kontrol dan kelas eksperimen; (2) pengunaan media film pendek dalam pembelajaran menulis teks anekdot siswa kelas X SMA terbukti efektif.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the development of electronic-book-based Critical and creative reading project to improve students ' critical thinking skills. This study was developed based on the Research and Development (R&D) model by Brog and Gall. The stages conducted in this study were (1) needs analysis, (2) planning, (3) development, (4) product validity, (5) revision, (6) response test, (7) revision, and (8) final product development. The product validity was assessed by two experts in teaching materials and graphs as the validators. The result of the validity assessment was then processed using the five-scale formula. The revision was done to meet the validators’ suggestions. Response test was conducted with students of the Indonesian Language Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The test results were processed using the AIKEN V formula. A revision was then made to meet students’ suggestions obtained from the test. At last, a trial was carried out to measure the effectiveness of the product in order to become the guideline to develop the final product.The research findings were as follows: (1) the lecturers and students in learning critical and creative reading in higher education expected teaching materials that were easily accessible, electronic, and collaborated with one of the learning models so that they were able to measure the success rate of the critical and creative reading process; (2) product development was carried out through the activities of designing materials, models and evaluations that were developed in a product, as well as designing electronic books in accordance with the results of the needs analysis; (3) the appropriateness test results by the material experts obtained 3.40 in the good category and the layout expert scored 4.65 with a very good category. The results of the response test for students after being calculated with the Aiken V formula obtained a score of 0.85 – 1.00 with a very good category. The results of the experimental test showed that the posttests of the control and experimental classes obtained results of 0.001, which showed <0.05, so H0 was rejected. Students' critical thinking skills after the treatment were significantly different. Therefore, the teaching material developed was effectively used to improve students' critical thinking skills.
