Abstract

This study investigates the persistence of medieval oral traditions among the destitute as recorded in George Orwell’s 1933 memoir, Down and Out in Paris and London. The primary objective is to analyze how these faint echoes from the Middle Ages function as a subterranean culture that preserves historical memory and communal identity outside of formal education. The methodology employs a Qualitative Textual Analysis grounded in New Historicism and Folkloristics. This approach treats the text as an ethnographic record, categorizing scraps of history, linguistic cant, and narrative revisions to understand their role in social survival. The main outcomes reveal that the tramp community acts as a living archaeological site. Linguistic fossils like deaner and kip indicate a direct lineage from medieval sources. Furthermore, results show that tramps engage in narrative revisionism—such as amending the Gilderoy legend to include a happy ending —and utilize historical myths like the "one bite law" to frame their suffering as part of an ancient struggle against aristocratic oppression. The conclusions indicate that these oral traditions are a byproduct of poverty’s annihilation of the future. Deprived of the written word, the marginalized mind reverts to a communal chain of speech that maintains human dignity through intellectual liberty. Ultimately, these echoes prove that the destitute are not a resourceless mob, but the reluctant guardians of a rich, epic tradition that modern industrial civilization has discarded as nonsense.

Abstract

This study analyzed Taylor Swift's expressive speech acts in The Ellen Show. This study aims to identify the categories of expressive speech and the adjectives manifested in the expressive speech acts to convey her emotions or feelings. The data were taken from three interview videos and analyzed using Ronan’s (2015) categories of expressive speech acts and Sinclair et al. (2017) for the types and functions of adjectives. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. From a total of 62 data, seven categories of expressive speech were identified in Taylor Swift conversations with Ellen. They are agreement, disagreement, volition, thanking, non-directed complaints in exclamations, expressing sorrow, and greetings. The most frequently used category is agreement, with a percentage 29,04%. This reflects Taylor's humble, polite, and respectful personality. While qualitative adjectives are the most dominant type of adjectives used with a percentage of 65,71%. This shows that Taylor often conveys her personal feelings and experiences in new music promotion, her past viral moments, and personal revelations emotionally and deeply.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the construction of women’s identity through the multimodal representation in Chiara Ferragni’s Instagram post with the Multimodal Discourse Analysis approach by Kress & van Leeuwen (2006), together with supporting theories including Abidin's (2017) strategy of authenticity in influencer culture, Manovich's (2016) digital aesthetic, and Bourdieu's (1984) cultural capital. The data in the form of photos and captions were analyzed based on the visual aspect, including the composition, gaze, pose, lighting, color, filter, and the textual aspect, such as the caption, hashtags, mentions, and emojis. The findings of the study indicate that Ferragni’s identity was formed by the multifaceted multimodal strategy, where the visual elements typically highlight glamour, social status, and cultural legitimacy. Meanwhile, the caption is an element of textual reinforcement of the meaning via anchorage and appraisal metafunctions. The researcher establishes that the women's representation, specifically Chiara Ferragni, on Instagram was constructed by a planned multimodal construction, which displays women as modern figures with glamorous, authentic, and influential in digital culture.

Abstract

The increasing influence of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) has significantly reshaped advertising strategies in Indonesia, where Korean celebrities are frequently employed as brand ambassadors to strengthen consumer engagement and emotional appeal. This study investigates the multimodal construction of emotional meaning in the Roma Kelapa television advertisement featuring the Korean actor, Lee Min Ho. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study adopts Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) based on the framework of Kress and van Leeuwen to analyze the interplay of linguistic, visual, gestural, and auditory modes. The data consist of a 30-second Roma Kelapa advertisement, with analysis focusing on verbal expressions, written text, gaze, facial expressions, gestures, camera techniques, color composition, and product representation. The findings reveal that emotional meaning is not produced by a single communicative mode but emerges from the integration of verbal and non-verbal semiotic resources. Linguistically, evaluative slogans and conversational expressions position Roma Kelapa as a symbol of appreciation, family affection, and product excellence. Visually, direct gaze, warm facial expressions, close-up shots, harmonious color schemes, and culturally recognizable celebrity imagery foster intimacy, trust, and authenticity. Furthermore, Lee Min Ho's public persona functions as a multimodal semiotic resource that enhances the advertisement's persuasive and emotional impact within the Indonesian cultural context.
