Abstract

This study aims to identify and explain the relationship between exposure to information on digital ethics and digital competence on social media behavior. The method used is a quantitative explanatory approach with a population of individuals participating in the "Indonesia Makin Cakap Digital" program through event.literasidigital.id and who are social media users. The results indicate that exposure to information on digital ethics and social media behavior have a significant relationship, with a very weak and positive correlation. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that exposure to information on digital ethics is a more important factor influencing social media behavior compared to digital competence. Therefore, Indonesia needs to implement digital ethics development programs to enhance positive behavior on social media.

Abstract

The consumption trend of beauty products in Indonesia has highlighted toner as one of the daily skincare essentials. Local skincare brands, including Avoskin Beauty, which was once the top toner brand in 2022, have been actively promoting their products. Avoskin employed an Instagram Ads sales promotion strategy. Additionally, Female Beauty is recognized as the leading beauty forum and community, serving as a primary information source for consumers before making purchases. However, Avoskin's toner sales experienced a significant decline in 2023. This study aims to investigate the influence of Instagram Ads sales promotion exposure (X1) and the intensity of reading online customer reviews on Female Daily (X2) on the purchasing decision of Avoskin Beauty toner (Y). Using the Advertising Exposure theory and simple linear regression analysis, the study found that both sales promotion exposure and the intensity of reading online customer reviews have a positive and significant impact on the purchasing decision of Avoskin Beauty toner

Abstract

Gender inequality and patriarchal domination remain significant issues in Indonesia, including in the Minangkabau society, which follows a matrilineal kinship system. Despite the important role of women in Minangkabau's social structure, patriarchy still prevails, creating disparities between men and women. The Musikal Nurbaya (2021) series highlights this issue through its female protagonist who faces patriarchal pressure. This study aims to analyze the forms of resistance exhibited by the main female character against patriarchal domination in the series. Using hermeneutic analysis, the study explores 13 scenes and 3 songs in the series to understand how gender injustice is critiqued and confronted by the main character. The results show that the character Nur demonstrates both open and covert resistance to patriarchal domination, reflected in her rejection of traditional gender norms and her fight for individual freedom. The series also reveals that despite Minangkabau's matrilineal system, patriarchal domination continues to affect women's lives. In conclusion, Nur's resistance reflects a broader struggle to achieve gender equality amid patriarchal norms.

Abstract

Football communities are predominantly male and hegemonically masculine, often subjecting female fans to stereotypes and unpleasant treatment. Despite this, many women actively engage in football fandom and community activities. This research explores how women negotiate their identity while participating in these male-dominated spaces. Four informants from two football clubs were interviewed using dialogic narrative analysis based on Labov's narrative stages model. Identity negotiation, performance, and management theories were applied to understand their experiences The findings reveal that male dominance and masculine hegemony persist, making identity negotiation inevitable. However, growing gender equality discussions have led to greater acceptance of female fans. Today, female fans are more likely to be valued and integrated with male fans. The identity negotiation process varies, influenced by individual experiences. Some women choose to ignore or normalize the negative behaviors of male fans, while others perform certain behaviors to balance group expectations with their personal identity. These performances include maintaining a positive image with parents, actively engaging in fan activities, and mimicking typically masculine behaviors, like showing toughness. Family support or rejection also plays a crucial role in shaping women's continued involvement in football fandom.

Abstract

The differences in distance and limitations in physical interaction experienced by couples in long-distance relationships (LDR) encourage individuals to adjust their communication patterns, emotions, and relationship maintenance strategies to achieve the desired level of closeness. Changes in the dynamics of long-distance relationships can affect the intensity of interaction and emotional closeness, which may lead to miscommunication and conflict. This research aims to understand the relationship maintenance strategies implemented by individuals in long-distance relationships, including the maintenance of the relationship, changes in communication patterns, conflicts or tensions that arise, and the resolution strategies applied. The theories used in this study are the Triangular Theory of Love, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. This research employs an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach, using in-depth interviews as the data collection technique conducted with five individuals. The results of this research show that communication adjustments in relationship maintenance are carried out by individuals from the moment they begin a long-distance relationship with their partner. Each individual accommodates their partner's communication needs by utilizing various communication technologies, such as text messages, phone calls, and video calls in their daily interactions. Despite facing challenges related to physical distance and limited face-to-face interaction, individuals strive to maintain their relationship through intensive communication and efforts to sustain emotional intimacy. Each couple in an LDR applies relationship maintenance behaviors to achieve the desired ideal state, prevent conflicts, and maintain commitment within the relationship. Physical distance is not the main cause of conflict but often leads to minor miscommunications and tensions that need to be managed. Conflict resolution in LDRs is carried out through various strategies, such as compromise, increasing communication frequency, and maintaining emotional intimacy through virtual interactions.

Abstract

Data from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) shows that throughout 2022, a total of 200,761 individuals were sent abroad to work as Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI), also commonly known as Indonesian Workers (TKI). For TKI who already have families, they are required to engage in long-distance communication with the family members left behind, particularly with children and parents who experience these long-distance relationships. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to describe the maintenance of long-distance relationships conducted by children and parents who work as TKI abroad. The research uses Communication Privacy Management Theory, Maintenance Relationship Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. Data collection techniques in this research include in-depth interviews with informants using an interview guide as a data collection tool. The results show long-distance communication is conducted by children and parents through social media, especially WhatsApp, with frequent communication. The children and parents interact almost daily. Communication barriers that arise include semantic barriers or double interpretation of communication messages. Relationship maintenance efforts apply elements of positivity, openness, assurance, joint activities, mediated communication, and avoidance. Self-disclosure between children and parents involves applying a privacy boundary between private information and collective information. Communication management regarding privacy issues is handled through privacy secrecy commitments and threat methods between children and parents. Tensions in the parent-child relationship arise due to privacy turbulence, particularly due to intentional or unintentional privacy breaches and misunderstandings about privacy commitments. Children and parents manage conflicts in their longdistance relationships by evaluating and improving communication and strengthening commitments

Abstract

Political news, especially related to the presidential election, should ideally be packaged seriously and substantively because it functions to help the public choose a leader rationally. However, a number of mainstream online media in Indonesia tend to highlight the entertainment and sensational elements displayed by each presidential candidate, especially regarding Prabowo Subianto. This happened to Detik.com which predominantly highlighted the behavior, interesting moments, humor, and conflicts involving Prabowo in the midst of his political activities. With these characteristics, it can be said that tabloidization occurred on Detik.com, where serious political news was packaged in a lighter and more entertaining way, thus reducing its relevance to the public interest. This study uses the framing theory and the framing analysis method of the Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki model to find out how Prabowo Subianto was framed by Detik.com in the tabloidization reporting style in the 2024 presidential election by reviewing the syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures of each news item. In addition, Carsten Reinemann's tabloidization elements are also used to describe the characteristics of tabloidization on Detik.com based on the dimensions of topic, focus, and style. The framing results will be categorized based on the style dimensions including trivialization, personalization, emotionalization, and dramatization news styles. From the analysis of 30 news items marked "pemilu" related to Prabowo Subianto published during the presidential election campaign period from January 1 to February 10, 2024, this study concluded that there were five frames categorized into four news presentation styles, namely (1) Prabowo Subianto is feuding with and being attacked by his political opponents (Emotionalization and Dramatization); (2) Prabowo Subianto is close to well-known political figures (Trivialization); (3) Prabowo Subianto is a figure who is meritorious, honorable, and willing to make sacrifices (Personalization and Dramatization); (4) Prabowo Subianto likes to joke and act funny (Trivialization); and (5) Prabowo Subianto participates in society (Trivialization). A review of the topic dimension shows that all news is packaged in the form of soft news and is described as more entertaining, interesting, or raising personal interests so that it is not politically and socially relevant. Meanwhile, the focus dimension shows that Detik.com uses an episodic frame with a focus on individuals where all news contains Prabowo Subianto as the main subject

Abstract

The oversharing behavior of Generation Z on Instagram is influenced by the lack of communication intensity between parents and children, which leads to inadequate supervision and guidance in social media use. As a result, Generation Z tends to seek social validation through oversharing, blurring the boundaries of privacy due to excessive self-disclosure. This study aims to determine the influence of parental communication intensity and self-disclosure on oversharing on Instagram, using an explanatory method and a non-probability sampling technique involving 100 respondents. Based on social penetration theory and family relationship schema, the results of the simple linear regression hypothesis test show that parental communication intensity is inversely related to oversharing, while self-disclosure has a positive relationship with oversharing. The significance value obtained is 0.000.

Abstract

Online games are an important part of the lives of Indonesian teenagers today. This research also shows that online games have a positive effect also in the aspect of friendship, this cannot be separated from the sharpening of social interactions so that they can provide important meaning to teenagers' social competence. This research uses the Miles and Huberman model. The results of the research show that the social skills model, appreciation/giving rewards, social intelligence and problem solving, assertiveness, non-verbal and verbal communication and personal perception are included in the Interaction-Process Analysis theory by Robert Bales in Little John (1983), namely social interaction and individual roles. In this theory of social interaction, it emphasizes how important it is to understand the dynamics of social interaction. Meanwhile, the Personal Perception aspect was included in Robert Bales in Little John (1983), namely individual interaction. This theory highlights the role of individuals in social interactions. In the context of research, researchers can explore the roles played by online game players in their games and how these roles can influence their interactions outside the game or in their real lives as teenagers

Abstract

Gender inequality between men and women still occurs frequently across various aspects such as social, political, economic, cultural, and industrial spheres, particularly in terms of accessibility. Discrimination against women remains widespread and pervasive in many areas of their lives. The Gadis Kretek series, which premiered on Netflix in November 2023, highlights the importance of understanding gender inequality. Gadis Kretek delivers a social critique on the patriarchal culture and discrimination against women in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to analyze and deeply identify the interpretation of gender inequality as experienced by women in the series Gadis Kretek, using hermeneutic analysis. The study draws upon organizational communication theory, standpoint theory, and liberal feminism. Data collection techniques include document observation. The findings reveal discrimination in various aspects of women's lives in the 1960s, particularly in the kretek industry. The main character, Dasiyah, faces obstacles when attempting to continue her family’s business but is not given the same opportunities as men. This inequality is evident in entrenched gender stereotypes and limited access to opportunities and resources for women. A grammatical hermeneutic approach uncovers the historical and narrative context, highlighting workplace gender discrimination, where women like Dasiyah must fight against patriarchal culture to pursue their rights and aspirations. Organizational communication theory and standpoint feminism explain how power structures and gender hierarchies influence social and professional interactions in the series' narrative. Ultimately, Gadis Kretek reflects women's ongoing struggle against gender inequality, a theme that persists into the modern era
