Abstract

Today, there are so many violent cases which are done by children. Meanwhile, Television, as the most consumed medium, mostly shows violent programs which one of the example is Anak Jalanan TV series. Children in their development stages are feared to imitate the violence because of what they have watched in television. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of another factor such as parental mediation in children’s television consumption. The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of the intensity of watching “Anak Jalanan” TV series and parental mediation towards violent behavior by children. The theories that are used in this study are the Social Learning Theory and Parental Mediation Theory. This study is an explanatory research with 100 samples which are taken by using non-probability sampling techniques. The hypothesis testing in this study uses Linear Regression analysis which is performed after passing the classical assumption test and Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The result of the classical assumption test in this study is qualified to become a regression model, but the significant value of the three dependent variables, according to the result of correlation test, are bigger than 0,05. The significant value of those three dependent variables are 0,255 of the intensity of watching “Anak Jalanan” TV series; 0,614 of restrictive mediation variable and 0,165 of active mediation variable. The result of correlation test shows that the three independent variables do not have relation with the violent behavior by children. The absence of the relation indicates that there is no influence of the intensity of watching “Anak Jalanan” towards violent behavior by children, the influence of restrictive mediation towards violent behavior by children and the influence of active mediation towards violent behavior by children. All the hypotheses in this study are rejected. It means that all the violent behavior by children are more influenced by other factors beyond the intensity of watching “Anak Jalanan” TV series and parental mediation.

Abstract

The mass media is a weapon for the patriarchal ideology to implant into the minds of the public. Through the news that is gender bias, the media can influence public’s political attitudes to fight for women's representation in parliament. The purpose of this study is to determine how Kompas does the framing about the figure of DPR RI Female Legislators from 2009 to 2014 period. In order to achieve the goals, this research is done by using muted group theory as one variant of the theories that explains the “silencing/muting” language study through the language of the dominant group. By using constructionist paradigm, research is conducted using qualitative method and Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki framing analysis. The subjects of this study are the news about DPR RI female legislators 2009-2014 period from the printed version/newspaper of Kompas in 2009 and 2014. The result of this study shows that the news in Kompas contributes to the perpetuation of patriarchal ideology. The perpetuation of this ideology is shown on the news regarding the role of female legislators on domestic issues to strategic political issues. Apparently, Kompas is not only silencing/muting women through the usage of language patterns, but it is also followed by the framing of the news that prioritizes the popularity aspect of female legislators as the entertainers (name makes news) that gives rise to the "taming", stereotyping gender: domestication, and marginalization through "silencing/muting" and the appearance of "trivialisation" or "disparagement" element of the female legislators. To face problems like this, the audience should become more media-literated. The media people shall also not be trapped into "lazy journalism". It is the challenge for the activists and female politicians to convince the young professional journalists in order not to be enslaved by stereotypes that degrade women's achievements in politics by providing insight about gender equality. Legislators have the role as puclic speakers representing the public in the government. The theories used consist of: Aristoteles Rhetoric Theory and Gender Communication Theory. Unit analysis of this research was three female legislators of DPRD Provinsi Jawa Tengah. The result of this research are that the difference of public speaking style wasn’t only found in the context of male and female legislators of DPRD Provinsi Jawa Tengah only, but even the female legislators have different style of public speaking. Moreover the stereotype about female communication style wasn’t found anymore on female legislator of DPRD Provinsi Jawa Tengah, but the culture of Central Java which is rich of courteousy, manners and rather not using high intonacy and tones, and also the formal procedures and informal etiquettes influence the public speaking style of all of the legislators, not only the females. Both the male and female legislators are positioned on the same position during the comitte meetings, without discriminations. But, the stereotype about women itself and the lack of recognition of their ability indeed put the female legislators in unstrategic position, such as the lack of female leaders on the leadership structures inside the legislature. This research concludes that female legislators of DPRD Provinsi Jawa Tengah still have some troubles to do their role as a public speaker in the legislature from the stereotype and the Central Java cultures about females, that demand politeness and softness in their behaviours and also yet to recognize female’s abilities as leaders.
