Abstract

This study aims to analyze the positive politeness strategies used in the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok account. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of positive politeness strategies used and to explain the purpose of those strategies. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The data were collected from the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok account. This study aims to analyze the positive politeness strategies used by users in the comments section of the @Alina Kim account on TikTok by utilizing the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). This study method used in this study is qualitative research. The data and source of data are collected from the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok videos in December 2022. The findings of this study show that the dominant positive politeness strategies used in the comment section are intensifying interest and giving compliments. These strategies aim to enhance the hearer's positive face, making them feel good about themselves. These strategies aim to create a positive and supportive environment, which is essential in building a sense of community and belonging. The conclusion, the positive politeness strategies used in the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok , particularly the strategies of intensifying interest and giving compliments, are effective in creating a positive and supportive relationship. The findings suggest that positive politeness strategies play a crucial role in the construction of social relations in online communities because they help to establish rapport, create an atmosphere of mutual interest, promote discussion, strengthen groups, and maintain politeness in online interactions. Keywords: Positive Politeness Strategies, Comment Section, TikTok.

Abstract

Social deixis is one of the pragmatics studies. The study of social deixis is also found in digital comics. Therefore, this research discusses the use of social deixis to identify the types of social deixis and their functions in the Lore Olympus Webtoon. This research is classified as qualitative descriptive research. All of the data of this research were taken from the conversations in the webtoon entitled Lore Olympus which contain social deixis. The result of this research shows that there are two main classifications of social deixis used in the Lore Olympus Webtoon namely relational social deixis and absolute social deixis. Relational social deixis includes four sub-classification types, 1) speaker and referent; 2) speaker and addressee; 3) speaker and bystander; 4) speaker and setting. Then, absolute social deixis consists of 1) authorized speaker; and 2) authorized recipient. Furthermore, the result of this study shows that there are three functions of social deixis namely to express politeness and respect, to express intimacy, and to identify authority. In general, understanding social deixis means learning more to show respect, and politeness between the speakers and the addressee by mentioning the specific title or call based on the context

Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the metaphoricalconcepts of themetaphorical expressions in Taylor Swift’s album Folklore and album Evermore,and to analyze the similarities and differences between the metaphoricalconceptsin Taylor Swift’s album Folklore and those in album Evermore. This research wasqualitative. The data of the research were in the form of words, phrases, andclauses containing metaphorical concepts. The data collection technique was document analysis. The result of this research showed the most dominant metaphorical concepts are Happy is Up, Anger is Fire, Sad is Down, and Love is a Story. Some similarities in terms of metaphorical concepts were also found inthose two albums, namely Anger is Fire, Time is Money, Love is a Story, and Sad is Down. This research confirms the previous research that metaphor cannot be avoided and systemic, that orientational metaphors can be dominant in some researches, and that metaphors can be used to talk about a given topic in manyways.

Abstract

This research discussed the english mastery map of PNM students using EPT as a parameter to the study program and the possible steps that will be taken by the institution as a follow-up to the implementation of the English exam. The writer wants to know four things in this research, namely how is: (1) the average of English mastery of PNM students (2) the mapping of English mastery on each study program, (3) the Listening, Structure, and Reading students’ mastery, and (4) the academic program possibility as a follow-up to student English exams. This research was conducted at Madiun State Polytechnic, even semester involving 3.172 students as a source of data that provided EPT score scores as research data. This research uses descriptive method. The research data were analyzed quantitatively using lowest, highest, and average score and percentage as statistical tools. The research result related to the map of students' English mastery in the final semester is shown with the average 460. Then, the average from the highest score is English Program, information technology, computer control, railway, electrical engineering, automotive, business administration, accounting, and logam (366). The third, the mastery English from the highest is reading (79,1%), Listening (66,2%), and Structure (59,2%). And the last, there are some possible academic programs, they are holding EPT, increasing EPT score, EPT preparation class, international program, and as a qualification to graduate

Abstract

This research focuses on the theory of translation shifts and accuracy of translation. The data were analyzed through the theory of translationby Catford  (1965), namely unit shifts, structural shifts, intra-system shifts, class shifts, and level shifts from English (SL) to Indonesian (TL). The problems discussed in this research are the types of translation shifts used in translating the novel “Percy Jackson and Olympians: The Lightning Thief”as well as how accurate the translation is. To solve the problem, a qualitative descriptive method was applied in this research. The data is taken from the novel “Percy Jackson and Olympians: The Lightning Thief”written in English and translated into Indonesian. The result of data analysis found that there were as many as 107 data. The most dominant data found in the novel is unit shift with 50 data, structure shift with 36 data,  intra-system shift with 8 data, class shift with 8 data, and  level shift with 4 data. In addition, the researcher also found 104 data were considered accurate translations, 3 data were considered less accurate translations, and none were inaccurate. Keywords: Translation, translation shift, translation accuracy

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the types and functions contained in comments on Sam Smith's Instagram account. The research design is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study are utterances that contain expressive speech acts. The data collection technique was carried out by collecting data from Instagram comments on Sam Smith's Instagram account in a post stating that her new album entitled Gloria has been released. Data in the form of comments were classified and analyzed according to the types and functions of expressive speech acts based on Norrick’s (1987) classification.Differences in each comment contained in Gloria's post is that each character in the comment has its expressive type - including those using expressive speech acts of thanking, expressive speech acts of greeting, expressive praise speech acts, and expressive complimentary speech acts. The fifty-two data contained in this study included five types of expressive speech acts taken from nine types based on Norrick’s classification. The five types found in the comments includes expressive speech acts of thanking (11 data), expressive speech acts of praising (28 data), expressive speech acts of greeting (10 data), expressive speech acts of protesting (1 datum), and expressive speech acts of complaining (1 datum). Furthermore, the functions of expressive speech acts are classified based on each type. The expressive speech act of thanking functions to convey the speaker's gratitude to the listener, and to convey the speaker's appreciation for the benefits that have been given by the interlocutor. The functions of expressive speech act of praising includes expressing the speaker's admiration to the album, expressing the speaker's approval of something, expressing the speaker's admiration for the song, and expressing the speaker's admiration for the photo. The expressive speech act of Greeting is used to welcome someone's arrival. The function of the expressive speech act of complaining is to show disappointment with something whereas the function of the expressive speech act of protesting is to criticize undesired actions performed by listeners.The result of the study could contribute to the deeper analysis of expressive speech acts in the field of pragmatics. Perhaps the implication of the result of the study would give more understanding of expressive speech acts used in social media. Keywords: Pragmatics: speech acts, types of speech acts, function of speech acts.
