Abstract

This study aims to determine the efforts of the Archives and Library Service of Karanganyar Regency in supporting information literacy for people with disabilities. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques such as interviews, observation, documentation, and literature review. The results of the study indicate that libraries support information literacy by providing physical and digital accessibility facilities, such as guiding blocks, braille rooms, braille books, and braille computers. In addition, support is also provided through direct assistance by librarians and a process of periodically identifying users' information needs. However, libraries still face obstacles in the form of limited access for people with disabilities to general collections. Therefore, improving the quality of services and expanding the accessibility of collections is essential to encourage independence for people with disabilities in obtaining information. Overall, this study confirms that libraries have a very crucial role in realizing inclusive and equitable access to information services for all levels of society.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the utilization of the Library-Cafe service at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) Library as a supporting facility for students’ learning activities. The Library-Cafe was established as a transformation of the "third place" to improve library service quality and fulfill higher education library accreditation standards. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth interviews with managing librarians, direct observations, and facility documentation. The results indicate that the Library-Cafe is implemented through two distinct service models: a self-service dry canteen located inside the library building to support student needs during night study sessions, and a wet canteen outside the building providing heavy meals during daytime operational hours. Student responses toward this service are highly positive, offering spatial accessibility, flexibility, and convenience during academic activities. The main challenges identified include limited human resources for supervision, cleanliness management issues, and operational budget constraints. Strategic solutions formulated include optimizing the role of Library Ambassadors, integrating simple transaction technologies, and strengthening partnerships with campus internal business units. Overall, the Library-Cafe contributes significantly to transforming the library into a productive and adaptive learning commons.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Generation Z’s information-seeking behavior using the Krikelas model at the Library Unit (UPT) of the Tarutung State Christian Institute (IAKN). This descriptive research with a literature review approach adapts the Krikelas model, which focuses on how individuals recognize gaps in knowledge and seek solutions to specific problems. This model emphasizes triggers of information needs, starting from experiences or urgent needs, then proceeding through search actions (observation/personal data) until information is obtained. Generation Z, also known as the iGeneration, has grown up with gadgets and the internet as integral parts of their lives. As academic information management institutions, university libraries are required to understand these characteristics. The results show that Gen Z students at IAKN Tarutung have implemented the components of the Krikelas model to meet their information needs. However, a major challenge is identified where the active rate of registered members remains low (8.4%). This indicates that their information-seeking behavior is heavily dominated by preferences for external digital sources outside the library system, driven by efforts to minimize uncertainty rapidly.

Abstract

The transformation of the role of university libraries requires staff to transform from information curators to educators (instructional librarians). However, the lack of a pedagogical background in education presents a significant obstacle to the implementation of information literacy classes. This study aims to analyze the level of pedagogical competency knowledge and instructional readiness of staff at the University of Riau (UNRI) Library following training in teaching techniques. This quantitative descriptive study employed a total sampling approach involving 30 respondents, consisting of 20 functional librarians and 10 library technical staff. Primary data were collected through a 10-item binary objective post-test instrument based on classroom scenarios (scenario-based assessment), covering four dimensions of pedagogical competency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed a mean post-test score of 66.33 (Good category), with 66.67% (20 staff) deemed to be in the safe zone of readiness to teach. Classroom management/public interaction (93.33%) and active teaching methods (83.33%) were key strengths for staff. Conversely, aspects of managing user psychology related to mitigating information anxiety/library anxiety (46.67%) and handling sudden technical teaching challenges (50.00%) were critical weaknesses experienced by staff. This study concluded that training interventions were able to improve staff's collective teaching readiness, but strengthening based on psychological empathy and mitigating digital infrastructure remains critically needed. The UNRI Library management is recommended to implement a collaborative teaching system (team teaching) between senior librarians and technical staff to standardize the quality of academic information literacy classes.

Abstract

The effectiveness of the physical management and maintenance of library materials is a crucial indicator in ensuring the sustainability of knowledge transfer in university libraries. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the achievement of quality targets to ensure they are not merely an administrative formality. This study aims to descriptively evaluate the achievement of the Collection Care Quality Targets at the Riau University Library UPA in 2024, identify factors inhibiting the handling of damaged books, and formulate strategic improvement recommendations for management. The research method used is a descriptive quantitative approach by analyzing secondary data sourced from the formal document, the Book Repair Recapitulation Form, document number 12-820/Lib.UR/F-09, through observation and descriptive analysis techniques. The results show that the actual annual performance of the preservation unit reached 95%, obtained from the successful restoration of 424 copies of books from a total of 446 damaged collections. This achievement demonstrates that the institution's Quality Target target (at least 80% per year) was successfully exceeded with a performance surplus of 15%. However, monthly analysis shows fluctuations, with the lowest performance point in November (73%), and a backlog of 22 damaged books at the end of the year. The study's conclusions confirm that preservation governance has been very effective, but operational obstacles remain in the form of workflow bottlenecks due to the high complexity of tracking content or missing pages. As a strategic recommendation, libraries are advised to strengthen component logistics management by establishing a digital critical page database system and digitizing reporting control forms into a real-time monitoring dashboard to prevent a backlog of damaged books at the end of the period.

Abstract

Technological developments and the penetration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have triggered the phenomenon of information overload and information anxiety among students. On the other hand, the utilization of digital assets at the University of Riau Library is still relatively low, thus triggering low-quality references and a high risk of plagiarism in student scientific papers. This study aims to describe the design, implementation strategy, and core materials of the "Academic Information Literacy Class" as a structured intervention step by the library. The program implementation method applies a Blended Learning and Project-Based Learning approach based on the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum. The core learning materials are focused on three main operational pillars: advanced scientific information retrieval techniques, strategies for selecting reputable journal publication media, and education on the legal and ethical use of AI in preparing research proposals. The analysis results show that the establishment of this structured class has proven effective in improving research independence, the quality of scientific writing, and student awareness of academic integrity. Through this program, the University of Riau Library has successfully adaptively transformed its role from merely a place to store physical collections (book repository) to a driver of academic quality (research facilitator).
