Biodiversitas 20: 1299-1305.  Paris polyphylla Smith is an important therapeutic plant that grows in the Indian Himalayan region. In Sikkim, the survival of the species is threatened by illegal extraction of its rhizome. Therefore, immediate conservation initiative is required to conserve the existing species population in the wild. Population assessment through field survey followed by ENM revealed a positive correlation between predicted suitable habitats with the actual sites of its occurrence, except in disturbed habitats. Precipitation of driest month (Bio14) and slope were the most influential factors that contributed 41.9 % and 30 % respectively to the MaxEnt model. Field survey revealed that the density of the plants varied between 0.45 (pl/m2) and 3.89 (pl/m2) and the frequency varied from 36% to 76%. The IVI for P. polyphylla ranged between 2.68 to 8.66 based on locations. On the other hand, the IVI of associated species varied from 3.57 to 18.14 based on species. P. polyphylla is a vulnerable plant in Sikkim Himalaya and it is facing an imminent threat of extinction. Under this situation, it is imperative that works on predictive modeling will help conserve the species. This study identified the potential habitats for P. polyphylla in the higher elevations of Sikkim Himalaya where it could be reintroduced.

Biodiversitas 20: 1973-1982. Agricultural production on tin tailings land must consider the safety of products from Pb metal contaminants. The presence of Pb metal can be overcome by using plants as phytoremediation. This study aimed to obtain information on the ability of phytoremediation of Pb by various types of grass and its interaction with the types of ameliorants in tin tailings media. Three species of grass were used, namely Pennisetum purpureum, Saccharum spontaneum, and Hymenachne acutigluma, and two types of ameliorant, namely lime and compost. The study was designed using a factorial treatment design laid out in a completely randomized design with two treatment factors, namely the type of grass and the type of ameliorant. Observations were done on growth, shoot Pb content and root Pb content. The ability of phytoremediation was assessed by using the approach of Bioconcentration factor (BCF) and Translocation Factor (TF) values. The highest phytoremediation ability was found in treatment of H. acutigluma grass treated with lime ameliorant, followed by S. spontaneum treated with lime ameliorous and S. spontaneum treated with compost ameliorant. Based on BCF values, P. purpureum and H. acutigluma were categorized as accumulators, and S. spontaneum was classified as an excluder. Based on TF values, the three types of grass used were classified as phytostabilisation. The high ability of phytoremediation in H. acutigluma was caused by its high BCF values, ??while the high ability of phytoremediation on S. spontaneum was caused by its low translocation factor value and high Pb absorption efficiency.

Abstract. Herawati T, Rohadi D, Rahmat M, Winarno B. 2019. An exploration of gender equity in household: A case from a peatland-based community in Riau, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 853-861. Gender roles in peatland-based communities’ livelihoods are an important factor in livelihood vulnerability due to challenging characteristics for conducting agriculture in this area. This article reports on a study of gender roles in Riau Province in 7 villages in 3 districts, aiming to identify significant attributes that determining gender equity at the household level. The data was collected through structured interviews in 221 households, in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions in every village. The research indicated that gender roles in agricultural activities are significantly dominated by men, while women play a more significant role in domestic activities. Both men and women contribute equally in the social life of the community; women’s participation and group membership is equal to men’s. Poor families tend to have higher gender equity in agricultural activities than rich households. The role of women in wealthier households is not in their physical contribution on the land but is mostly transformed into a decision making role. This indicates that women have a significant role in family livelihoods for both poor and rich families, but in different forms.

Analysis of the condition of forest interior and edge in Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia based on floristic composition and structural characteristics of tree community. Biodiversitas 20:  900-906.  Forest fragmentation creates forest edges that possess different biotic characteristic in comparison to its interior. Those differences may include difference in vegetation structure and composition, and ecological processes in the ecosystem. This study aims to compare the condition between forest interior and forest edge in Mount Papandayan and provide assessment of the overall condition of the forest based on its floristic and structural characteristics. We conducted vegetation analysis of tree in which six plots, each of 0.1 ha, were established in the forest interior and forest edge. Based on the results, species richness and diversity of tree were higher in the forest interior than the forest edge. Based on the importance value index, the proportion of co-dominant species in forest edge sites were higher than in the forest interior sites. In addition, tree density, regeneration potential, total basal area, wood density average, and biomass were higher in the forest interior than in the forest edge. Overall, Mount Papandayan suffers moderate disturbance, which follows through the intermediate disturbance hypothesis and this can be seen from its relatively high diversity index of tree yet it has moderate wood density average.

Short Communication: Community structure of prawns (Decapoda: Penaeidae and Palaemonidae) in mangrove inlets of Kuala Langsa, Aceh, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1306-1311. The aim of this research is to describe the structure of prawn community that found at mangrove inlets of Kuala Langsa (Aceh, Indonesia). The survey was done in August 2018. Sampling sites were defined as arbitrarily. Scope netting (mesh size 1 cm and diameter 100 cm) was used to sample the prawn community. Samples were analyzed and stored at The Primary Laboratory of Universitas Samudra, Kota Langsa, Aceh. Five species of prawns from two families (i.e., Decapoda: Penaeidae and Palaemonidae) were found, i.e., Penaeus monodon, Penaeus indicus, Metapenaeus monoceros, Penaeus vannamei, Palaemon sp. The most dominance species found is M. monoceros, and the most infrequently species found is Palaemon sp. Prawn community between sampling sites are found in a high level of similarity, with medium diversity and evenness index, and no dominance indicated.

Abstract. Muhallilin I, Aisyah SI, Sukma D. 2019. The diversity of morphological characteristics and chemical content of Celosia cristata plantlets due to gamma ray irradiation. Biodiversitas 20: 862-866. Celosia cristata L. or better known as Jengger Ayam is an ornamental plant that has a unique flower shape with attractive colors. Besides, this plant also contains antioxidants and chemical compounds that are used for traditional medicine to treat high blood pressure, and diabetes or as eye ailments. Increased diversity of C. cristata through hybridization techniques is constrained by flowers forming small grains that makes it difficult for castration and isolation of reproductive organs. This study aimed to increase C. cristata diversity of morphology and chemical content using mutation techniques induced by gamma irradiation. Plantlets were irradiated at 0, 25, 50 and 75 Gy doses. Scoring was conducted for 5 weeks until MV6 generation. Planlets were acclimatized for 3 weeks. The surviving plants were moved onto experimental land until seeded and tested for phytochemicals. Gamma irradiation with 25, 50 and 75 Gy doses produced 4 clones that have morphological changes in color and shape of the stem, leaves, and flowers. Changes in chemical content were observed with the appearance of triterpenoid compounds in 1 clone irradiated with 25 Gy.

Changes of ecological wisdom of Sundanese People on conservation of wild animals: A case study in Upper Cisokan Watershed, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1284-1293. In the past Sundanese rural people had a very close relationship with the environment. They utilize natural resources based on traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and is strongly influenced by their perception of nature. This article elucidates the mythology of Sundanese rural people on wild animals and the changes of rural people perceptions and their behavior to wild animals in the rural ecosystem based on a case study in Bojong Salam and Sukaresmi villages, Rongga district, West Bandung, the upper Cisokan watershed, West Java. Method used in this study was qualitative, while some techniques, including observation, participant observation, and semi-structured interview were applied. The result of study showed that in the past Sundanese the rural people of Upper Cisokan watershed, West Bandung, West Java owned myths on some wild animals that is inherited from their ancestor through oral and using mother language. The influence of these myths on wild animals caused the rural people had prohibited to kill these animals and important role for traditional conservation. Nowadays, however, some myths on wild animals of rural people have not eroded or not recognized by young generations. Consequently, some taboos in hunting and catching animal based on myths on wild animals have tended not been applied to conserve wild animals traditionally. Therefore, to develop appropriate nature conservation, the biophysical, the socio-economic and cultural aspects must be holistically considered.

Abstract. Afsholnissa S, Hernawan E, Lastini T. 2019. Land cover change and land use suitability analyses of coastal area in Bantul District, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1475-1481. Shrimp farming in the southern coast of Bantul District is considered to be the cause of environmental degradation, decline of mangrove association due to logging for land conversion to shrimp pond and also considered to be the cause of agricultural land for crops around the shrimp pond. The purpose of this study was to identify land use change and analyze the land suitability for shrimp farming, agriculture, and mangrove plant associations. Identification of land use was done using ENVI 5.3. The study identified 34.88 ha (3.16%) empty ponds, 20.97 ha (1.90%) active ponds and as much as 91.93 ha (8.31%) land used for agriculture. The identification of land use change using Google Timelapse revealed a dominant land conversion of sandy soil and mangrove plant area into shrimp ponds in 2007 and continue to increase from 2011 to 2015. Land suitability was evaluated using ArcGIS 10.5 with an overlay method. The results revealed that 634.82 ha area of the land was suitable for shrimp ponds and ??84.32 ha area were suitable for non-paddy agriculture. Lands suitable for paddy field were about 148.58 ha, and that for mangrove plant association was 616.42 ha. Spatially, coastal area of ??Bantul District was dominantly suitable for shrimp farming.

Short Communication: Protein profiles of Giant Mudskipper and its potential use as biomarker candidate for heavy metal contamination in Barito Estuary, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 745-753. Giant mudskipper (Periphthalmodon schlosseri, Pallas 1770) is one of important biological diversity that potential as bio-indicator in environment assessment which is heavy metal contamination. These fish are susceptible to ambient environment, that effect to their physiological mechanism including protein synthesis and expression. This research aims to identify protein profiles of giant mudskipper muscle and review its potential application as a biomarker for heavy metal contamination in Barito Estuary of South Kalimantan. Total proteins were isolated from fish muscle using Tris EDTA buffer and then precipitated using Ammonium sulfate salt. The protein concentration was measured using Bradford assay and then separated based on molecular weight using the SDS-PAGE method. The result showed muscle proteins of giant mudskipper could be precipitated on optimum condition at Ammonium sulfate saturation 60-70% which protein concentration 5.106 mg.mL-1. The protein separated into 20 bands for raw and precipitated proteins which molecular weight ranging from 33 into 184 kDa. Further study is needed for protein identification based on amino acids sequence of protein bands for biomarker discovery and validation.

Biodiversitas 20: 1055-1062. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary grass-legume silages on the microbial community by using a culture-independent approach. Treatments consisted of R0: 50% Pennisetum purpureum and 50 % concentrate; R1: 20% P. purpureum, 50 % concentrate, and 30% grass-legumes silage; R2: 20% P. purpureum, 35 % concentrate, and 45% grass-legumes silage; and R3; 20% P. purpureum, 20 % concentrate, and 60% grass-legumes silage. The rumen fluid obtained from fistulated cattle was used for T-RFLP, 16S rDNA clone library, and qPCR analyses. The results indicated that bacterial diversity was dominated by Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and methanogen by Methanobacteriales, based on partial 16S rDNA sequences. The microbial communities were dominated by Prevotella brevis, P. ruminicola, Succiniclasticum ruminis, and Methanobrevibacter ruminantium, M. smithi, M. thueri, and M. millerae. The increasing silage diet in a rumen suppressed methanogenesis by reducing population distribution of Methanobacteriales, directly or indirectly, by reducing the diversity of bacterial populations. Generally, the increase silage in the diet changed the bacterial and methanogen community. Grass-legume silage diets of less than 45% are potential for ruminant diet to reduce methane production by a decrease of 4% in the relative distribution of methanogens in the rumen.
