Abstract. Muhakka, Suwignyo RA, Budianta D, Yakup. 2019. Vegetation analysis of non-tidal swampland in South Sumatra, Indonesia and its carrying capacity for Pampangan buffalo pasture. Biodiversitas 20: 1077-1086. In Indonesia, non-tidal swampland area is 13.27 million ha, only 4 million ha has been developed with details of 2.6 million ha that managed by the public and the private sector and 1.3 million ha with government assistance. This study aims to analyze vegetation structure of non-tidal swampland in Pulau Layang Village, Ogan Komering Ilir District, South Sumatra, Indonesia and Rambutan Village, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra, Indonesia and to examine its carrying capacity for Pampangan buffalo pasture. Methods used were by the combination of direct observation, survey using plot sampling with total 50 observation plots, and measurements to determine forage production using Halls method. The results show that there 19 forage species were in two studied areas which are potential as Pampangan buffalo feed. Species with the highest Important Value Index were Purun tikus (Eleocharis .dulcis) with 89.71% and Kumpai padi (Oryza. rufipogon) with 54.08%. The production of fresh forage and dry matter in the wet season in Pulau Layang was 6.90 tons ha-1 year-1 and 1.27 tons ha-1 year-1, respectively, whereas in Rambutan they were 3.68 tons ha-1 year-1 and 0.91 tons ha-1 year-1, respectively. The production of fresh forage and dry matter in the dry season in Pulau Layang was 4.86 tons ha-1 year-1 and 0.99 tons ha-1 year-1, respectively, while in Rambutan they were 2.52 tons ha-1 year-1 and 0,71 tons ha-1 year-1, respectively. The pasture carrying capacity in Pulau Layang in the wet season was 3.66 AU (Animal Unit) ha-1 year-1 and in the dry season, it was 2.85 AU ha-1 year-1, while in Rambutan Village it was 2.61 AU ha-1 year-1 and 2.04 AU ha-1 year-1, respectively. There were six species of forage with high production, namely Kumpai tembaga (Hymenachne acutigluma) Kumpai padi (Oryza rupifogon), Kumpai minyak (Hymenachne amplexicaulis), Are bolong (Polygonum barbatum L), Bento rayap (Leersia hexandra) and Purun tikus (Eleocharis dulcis). It is estimated that there still can be added buffalo cattle as much as 0.31 AU ha-1 year-1 in Pulau Layang Village so 155 buffaloes and 0.59 AU ha-1 year-1 in Rambutan Village.709 buffaloes

Abstract. Napaldet JT, Buot JR IE. 2019. Diversity of aquatic macrophytes in Balili River, La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines as potential phytoremediators. Biodiversitas 20: 1048-1054.  Phytoremediation, an emerging, low-cost, aesthetically pleasing technology, is now being eyed for restoration of Balili River, Philippines. But first, there is a need to identify plants ideal for its phytoremediation. Macrophytes in the main stream, Bolo Creek and Mamaga Creek of Balili River were inventoried in this study with focus on determining macrophytes that were local, dominant (=fast growing), have high biomass and deep root systems – traits ideal for phytoremediation. A total of 38 species of macrophytes under 37 genera and 19 families were inventoried. This number is much higher than the previous inventory which recorded only 9 species. Consequently, diversity indices recorded in this study is much higher. The difference could be attributed to the time of sampling wherein the previous inventory was done in July, a rainy month, in contrast with this in April, the summer month at which the river is at its lowest level. At this period, much of the littoral zone is exposed for colonization of plants known to be easily dispersed and germinate such as Asteraceae species. In terms of species richness, family Asteraceae was the most represented with 11 species but in terms of dominance, the story was different. Dominant macrophytes of Balili River were species of family Poaceae (Pennisetum purpureum, Eleusine indica and Cynodon dactylon), Amaranthaceae (Amaranthus spinosus and Alternanthera sessilis), Solanaceae (Solanum americanum) and Commelinaceae (Commelina diffusa). Local macrophytes with potential for phytoremediation were P. purpureum, E. indica, A. spinosus and S. americanum.

Abstract. Nguyen XV, Nguyen TH, Dao VH, Liao L. 2019. New record of Grateloupia taiwanensis S.-M. Lin et H.-Y. Liang in Vietnam: Evidence of morphological observation and rbcL sequence analysis. Biodiversitas 20: 688-695. Members of Grateloupia show highly diverse morphological traits, and this makes species classification more difficult.  Samples were found growing with other marine algae nearshore, 3–5 m depth at Da Nang City. Morphological observation of vegetative and reproductive structures as well as phylogenetic analysis based on the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-carboxylase-oxygenase (rbcL) sequence confirmed its identification.  Phylogeny of members of Grateloupia inferred from Bayesian Inference, Maximum Likelihood, Maximum Parsimony and Neighbour Joining indicated materials collected in Vietnam compared well with known G. taiwanensis from the type locality, with very little sequence divergence. Grateloupia taiwanensis S.-M. Lin et H.-Y. Liang is therefore reported for the first time from Vietnam.

Biodiversitas 20: 719-724. We studied the activity budget and diet of a group of wild silvery lutungs (Trachypithecus cristatus) in Gunung Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, with special attention to age-and sex-related differences. We conducted behavioral observations between July and October 2016, and found that resting constituted the greatest proportion of their daily activities (46%), followed by moving (38%), feeding (12%), and grooming (4%). Resting peaked between 11 am and 1 pm, while moving decreased in this period. The juveniles showed higher percentage of moving and lower percentage of feeding than the adults. The adult males showed higher percentage of grooming than the adult females. Finally, the nursing females showed lower percentage of resting and higher percentage of grooming than single females. During the study, we recorded 14 plant species consumed by the lutungs. Their dietary composition was composed of 63% foliage and 37% fruit. Both the foliage and fruits of Ficus variegata, a plant species belonging to the family Moraceae, was the most consumed. Foliage was frequently consumed by the nursing females and juveniles. The adult males were frequently observed to eat fruit during the study period. No fruit was consumed by the nursing females.

Diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1215-1221. The purpose of the study was to analyze the flora diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra. Data collected were the number and girth diameter of mangrove tree species, and aquatic ecology parameters using transect method. The sample plots size were 2m×2 m; 5m×5 m; 10m×10 m; for seedling, sapling, and tree, respectively. The observation plots were arranged in a row of 120 m length on two sides of the forest edge, namely Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank. Data were analyzed using importance value index (IVI), Simpson’s diversity index and Sørensen’s community similarity. The study revealed that there were differences in mangrove characteristics in two study sites. There were 57 plant species identified inside and outside sample plots, but only 15 species (26.32%) among them were categorized as true mangrove species. Inside the sample plots, there were 11 and 10 mangrove tree species recorded on the Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank, respectively, but only 7 species among them were found in both sites. The mangroves on Calik Riverbank were dominated by Nypa (IVI 53.59%) and Bruguiera (51.12%), while those on Banyuasin Riverbank were dominated by Sonneratia (66.91%) and Avicennia (51.73%). The Simpson’s diversity index for Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank was 0.82 and 0.78, respectively, whereas the Sørensen’s coefficient of community between the two sites was 0.67.

Update phylogenetic information of the local varieties of cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) from North Maluku, Indonesia based on ITS sequences data. Biodiversitas 20: 1510-1515. Clove (Syzygium aromaticum L. Merr & Perry) is a native spice plant species in Indonesia, especially Maluku and North Maluku. The phylogenetic relationship among local varieties of cloves in North Maluku, Indonesia is currently unclear; therefore molecular verification research is required for further conservation and breeding programs. This study aims to identify the taxonomic position and phylogenetic relationship among two valuable local varieties of cloves rom North Maluku, i.e., ’Afo’ and ’Sibela’, based on ITS sequences data. Afo clove is considered as the oldest clove native to Ternate island, and Sibela clove is the oldest clove native to Bacan Island. The phylogenetic analysis using both Maximum Parsimony and Neighbour Joining algorithms confirmed the monophyletic group of cloves (S. aromaticum) and separated to outgroup of Eugenia species. Both phylogenetic trees produced three clades with the same pattern and supported by strong bootstrap values of 99-100%.

In Indonesia, the increasing market demand for strawberries (Fragaria spp.) is not comparable to increased strawberry productivity. One of the efforts made to increase strawberry productivity with superior quality is plant breeding. The purpose of this research was to determine the genetic variation, lineage, and similarity index in some strawberry cultivars using molecular markers of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Eleven strawberry cultivar samples were taken from Indonesian Citrus and Subtropical Fruits Research Institute (Balitjestro), Batu City, East Java, Indonesia and Strawberry Agritourism in Banyuroto Village, Magelang District, Central Java, Indonesia. DNA isolation using modified CTAB buffer method. DNA amplification using PCR-RAPD method with 5 primers, namely UBC-516, UBC-594, OPA 10, OPA 16, and OPG 11. Strawberry lineage dendrogram construction was analyzed with clustering of Unweight Pair-Group Using Arithmetic Average (UPGMA) software Multi-Variate Statistical Average (MVSP). The research results showed that the 5 RAPD primers used in 11 strawberry cultivars produced 30 polymorphic DNA bands and 20 monomorphic DNA bands so it can be concluded that the genetic variation among 11 strawberry cultivars can be detected using RAPD molecular markers. The lineage of 11 strawberry cultivars that have the highest similarity index is found in Earlibrite and Rosalinda II cultivars of 98.85%.

Schmidt L, Rustiami H, Theilade I. 2019. Local monitoring of flowering and fruiting of Jernang, Daemonorops species in Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 118-125. Phenology and fruit production recordings of Jernang (Daemonorops spp.) were conducted in southern Sumatra over two one-year periods. Flowering and fruiting of 64 individual clumps with 570 stems > 2 m and 43 clumps with 478 stems > 2 m respectively were recorded on a monthly basis. Results showed that flowering and fruiting of Jernang took place throughout the year with a peak in April and May and at low level in September to March. Duration of male inflorescences was 2-3 months. Fruits were usually harvested for resin 2-3 months after flowering. Sex ratio of clusters was about 1:1. Flowers and fruits were produced on vigorously growing stems that had reached canopy light exposure. Clusters consisted of from 2 to 36 stems. In some clusters, all stems bore reproductive organs; in others, only few stems had flowers or fruits. Female clusters had significantly more stems than male clusters, but male clusters produced more inflorescences than did females. About 80% of the clusters during the first year’s survey and 50% the second year produced flowers. The most vigorous male clusters produced more than 80 inflorescences with up to 15 on a single stem within a year. The highest producing female clusters produced 12 inflorescences in a year with up to five inflorescences and four infructescences per stem in a year. The data was primarily collected by trained local monitors. They knew the species well and were used to spot flowers and fruits. However, since the local monitors were also all Jernang collectors, they usually picked fruits before maturity, and the full development into mature fruits was thus interrupted.

Genetic structure and diversity between and within African and American oil palm species based on microsatellite markers. Biodiversitas 20: 1233-1240. The genus Elaeis consists of only two species, Elaeis guineensis Jacq. (the African oil palm species) and E. oleifera (HBK) Cortes (the American oil palm species). E. guineensis (E.g) is widely cultivated in southeast Asia and Africa, whereas E. oleifera (E.o) is naturally existed and cultivated in Central and South America. The objectives of this research were to analyze genetic diversity of eight groups of E.g and two groups of E.o using co-dominant genetic markers (SSRs) and evaluate their genetic structures. A total of 27 SSR loci was used to genotype a total of 128 accessions of African oil palm species (E.g) belonging to three different types (Dura, Pisifera and Tenera) and eight genetic backgrounds (Dumpy Dura and Deli Dura; Avros, Dumpy Avros, Binga, and Angola Pisifera; and Angola and Dumpy Avros Tenera) and 64 accessions of E.o collected from two different regions (Tefe and Manaus). The genotype data were used to calculate the population genetic diversity and structures for each oil palm species using the appropriate software. Results of the analysis indicated although they belonged to two different species, E.g and E.o shared many of the same SSR alleles in their genome and only contain few species-specific SSR alleles. Most of the evaluated genetic parameters were similar between E.g and E.o oil palm species but E.o has higher average number of effective allele than that of E.g. The calculated genetic variance is mostly belonged to the within-species variance source while the between species is relatively small. The phylogenetic tree and structure analysis reveal the high genetic variability among the evaluated oil palm groups which would be beneficial for future breeding program at Mekarsari Research Station. The tested E.o specific alleles were effective for identifying introgression lines between Eo × E.g // E.g carrying the E.o chromosome fragments. Therefore, these E.o specific alleles could be used in oil palm backcrossing program to monitor the introgression process.

Ningsih R, Megia R. 2019. Folic acid content and fruit characteristics of five Indonesian dessert banana cultivars. Biodiversitas 20: 144-151. Folic acid plays an important role in the many metabolic functions of organism, especially pregnant women. Whereas banana is a fruit that rich in nutrients, high productivity, high diversity, well known, and widely consumed in many countries and by various communities from infants to elderly. The research aimed to analyze folic acid content and describe the morphology of mature fruits at three different genomic groups of five Indonesian dessert banana cultivars namely Ambon Kuning (AAA), Ambon Lumut (AAA), Raja Sereh (AAB), Raja Bulu (AAB), and Lampung (AA). The folic acid content of fruit was analyzed using HPLC equipped with a UV-vis detector. Fruit characters were analyzed based on 21 descriptors then subjected to clustering analysis. The result shows that folic acid content of mature stage was 22.26; 21.39; 22.59; 21.2; and 24.58 ?g/100 g fresh weight for those five banana cultivars respectively. Lampung cultivar showed the highest value. Analysis of variance followed by DMRT at 5% probability showed that folic acid, bunch weight, fruit weight, and fruit length were significantly diverse among those five cultivars. Clustering analyses revealed that two groups were formed. The first comprises of Ambon Kuning and Ambon Lumut while the second of Raja Sereh, Lampung, and Raja Bulu. Lampung cultivar was closely related to Raja Sereh than the other cultivars. Adjusted Rand Index analyzed concluded that the immature peel color, mature pulp color, and predominant taste were the best distinctive characters. This knowledge can be used as a consideration for the plant breeding program especially in nutrition improvement.
