Regeneration capacity and threats to mangrove areas on the southern coast of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines: Implications to mangrove ecosystem rehabilitation. Biodiversitas 21: 3625-3636. Regeneration capacity is important as it determines the fate of an ecosystem. This study assessed six mangrove areas in the southern coast of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines to evaluate their regeneration capacity status. Four mangrove ecotypes were delineated namely seaward, middle, landward and riverine zones at each mangrove ecosystem, where dominant mangrove species were identified and selected for regeneration capacity study. Three subplots measuring 1 x 1 m2 were laid within the five 10 x 10 m2 survey plots established per zone. The juveniles were counted and categorized according to their height classes, using linear regeneration sampling method; where: RCI (?40 cm) considered seedlings; RCII (41-150 cm) as saplings; and RCIII (151-?300 cm) as small trees. Potential threats both anthropogenic and natural were determined through key informant interviews. Seven dominant species were identified across ecotypes in all mangrove sites, namely Avicennia marina, Avicennia rumphiana, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Sonneratia alba, and Xylocarpus granatum. RCI (seedlings) is the most abundant across mangrove sites irrespective of the dominant species. Fishpond operation within the mangrove stand is considered a major threat to the juveniles and most mangrove ecosystems. Therefore, protection and constant monitoring of these mangrove ecosystems are necessary to ensure regeneration success in the future.

Isolation and characterization of lactic acid bacteria from fecal pellets, coelomic fluid, and gastrointestinal tract of Nypa worm (Namalycastis rhodochorde) from West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4726-4731. Lactic acid bacteria isolated from the intestinal tract as probiotic could be beneficial because they could trigger the growth of the host by enhancing digestibility, increasing their immune system, and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria through the enzymatic process or metabolites production. The purposes of this study were to identify and characterize lactic acid bacteria from fecal pellets, coelomic fluid, and gastrointestinal tract of Nypa worm (Namalycastis rhodochorde). Bacterial isolation was carried out by the pour plate method on de Mann Rogosa Sharp Agar (MRSA). Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) isolates were purified and then physiologically characterized by some biochemical tests. Cellulolytic activities were carried out by detecting a clear zone formation on CMC-congo Red Agar. There were 20 isolates of lactic acid bacteria from fecal pellets, coelom fluid, and gastrointestinal tract of nypa worm. Ten isolates (50%) had cellulolytic activity on CMC-phenol red agar. Eight isolates were closely related to the genus Lactobacillus, while two isolates were closely related to the genus Bacillus. These cellulolytic bacteria could be developed further as probiotic in Nypa worm feed.

Abstract. Asra R, Silalahi M, Fijridiyanto IA. 2020. The practice and plants used in Besale ritual healing by the Anak Dalam Tribe in Nyogan Village, Jambi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4529-4536. The Anak Dalam Tribe (ADT) is an indigenous ethnic which inhabits the center of Sumatra, especially in Jambi and South Sumatra Provinces, Indonesia. The ADT communities still maintain their traditional rituals; one of them is the Besale ritual healing (BRH). This study aims to analyze the diversity of plants used in BRH by the ADT in Nyogan Village, Jambi Province, Indonesia. The study was conducted with an ethnobotany approach through surveys using interviews and participatory observations. The total number of informants was six persons, namely the leaders and performers of the BRH. The data were analyzed qualitatively using descriptive statistics. The BRH is carried out by a dukunorsidi (shaman), bujang pembayun (dancers), biduan (singers), and inang (assistant). They combine ritual and treatment simultaneously to cure people who have severe illnesses. There are 21 species belong to 20 genera and 12 families of plants used in the BRH. The plants are used to build a hall (place for the BRH), "bird" ornament, and offerings. The most widely used part of the plant is the flowers (34,61%). The plants used in the BRH are fresh materials, which are burned, smoked, hung, and eaten during the ritual.

One of the goals of managing global forest ecosystems today is to synergize their socio-economic, ecological and community livelihood benefits. Each forest type has various socio-economic and ecological characteristics that influence its management strategies and the provision services to the community. In general, the socio-economic benefits of forests in supporting community livelihoods are well known, however, the information which is specifically relevant to tropical monsoon forests is still very limited. This research aims to fill this knowledge gap, by providing information about the socio-economic conditions and provision of services of tropical monsoon forests to people's livelihoods. The research was conducted through structured interviews, FGDs, and field observations, by an analysis unit in community forests in the Sikka district. The information obtained was analyzed through descriptively qualitative and quantitative methods. The results showed an imbalance between the socio-economic conditions of people who rely on the tropical monsoon forest for their livelihoods and the carrying capacity of fuelwood, food, and fodder supply. This imbalance is due to the weak synergy and organization of stakeholders in optimizing how the provision services of forests are used to support farmers' livelihoods. Farmers' dependence on the tropical forest services is still high, therefore the strengthening of farmers' institutions becomes a key factor that determines sustainable management of the forest and enhances the value of its benefits to the community.

Abstract. Zulfahmi, Purwanto E, Parjanto, Yunus A. 2020. Phenotypic diversity and plasticity index of Eurycoma apiculata populations in Eastern Sumatra, Indonesia based on leaves morphology. Biodiversitas 21: 2923-2934. Eurycoma apiculata A.W. Benn. is a protected species in Indonesia, but diversity information of this species is limited. The objective of this study was to assess the phenotypic diversity, phenotypic plasticity index, and phenotypic differentiation among populations of E. apiculata in Eastern Sumatra, Indonesia based on leaves morphology. A total of 45 traits were measured on leaves from six populations studied. The result of this found that the phenotypic variation coefficient (CV) of the characters was ranged from 7.41% to 36.97%, revealed the abundant phenotypic variation in the species. The phenotypic CV values of the population varied from 13.95% to 24.10%. The CV values of all populations from the mainland Sumatra (17.75%) were lower than that from the Riau archipelago (23.61%), which revealed that phenotypic traits in mainland Sumatra were more stable compared to populations in the Riau archipelago. The population phenotypic plasticity index value of populations ranged from 0.41 to 0.51, and it was classified as a moderate level. The phenotypic differentiation coefficient among populations in this study was relatively low (VST = 21.06%), indicating a lower phenotypic variation among populations than within populations. The scatter plot of principal component analysis and UPGMA dendrogram divided the six populations studies into two groups. The findings of this study recommend that the in-situ conservation method is an effective protection strategy for E. apiculata while ex-situ conservation method can be implemented as a supplementary method.

Biodiversitas 21: 4511-4523. Botubarani in Gorontalo, on the northern coast of Tomini Bay and Labuhan Jambu in Teluk Saleh, Sumbawa recently became whale shark tourism destinations in Indonesia. Both sites offer visitors opportunities to interact with whale sharks, either watching from canoes or snorkelling and diving. In this study, we investigated the status and ecotourism potential of whale shark watching as a form of marine wildlife tourism development in eastern Indonesia by examining the existing operations in both sites. Data were collected using questionnaires administered to local community members and visitors to understand their perceptions, and how this opportunity was valued. Secondary data were collected to explore and understand influencing factors. Findings revealed that whale sharks commonly emerge near bagan lift-nets and other interactive areas as a response to the presence of their favorite prey, anchovies, and rebon shrimp. In general, whale sharks most commonly visit bagan lift nets and can be found in the interaction areas in the morning and stay for couple of hours before swimming away to deeper waters. Out of 119 community respondents in Labuhan Jambu village (Teluk Saleh) and Botubarani, Gorontalo, 80.7% knew about the occurrence of whale sharks in their locality. Of the 111 visitor respondents, 67.6% knew about the whale shark watching sites from word of mouth. The study results also suggest a correlation between chlorophyll-a concentration, anchovies, rebon shrimp and whale sharks. Regarding management approaches to this type of tourism, a local community-based management model is strongly recommended, with 87.4% of respondents showing interest in this approach. The roles and responsibility of local government in developing such tourism is very significant, especially with respect to facilitating appropriate competency within the local community throughout training and education, as suggested by nearly 26% of respondents.

Abstract. Yulianto D, Batubara IIAS, Nur FM, Rizal S, Siti-Azizah MN, Muchlisin ZA. 2020. Morphometrics and genetics variations of mullets (Pisces: Mugilidae) from Aceh waters, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3422-3430.  Mullets are one of the commercial groups of coastal fish living in Aceh waters, in Indonesia. Presently, there is limited information on the bioecology, especially on the genetics and morphometrics of these fishes. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the morphology and genetic variations of Liza macrolepis, Liza tade, and Moolgarda engeli mullets. This study was conducted from January 2018 to July 2019 in four locations along the northern and eastern coasts of Aceh.  Data were obtained by measuring the morphometrics of a total of 180 samples of the species in equal ratios. The data were analyzed using the ANOVA and Discriminate function analysis (DFA). The ANOVA test showed that at least 75% of characters are not significantly different among the mullets. Meanwhile, the discriminant function analysis produces the two functions with Eigenvalue of 0.627 and 0.107 with 85.5% and 17.2% total variants, respectively.  Function 1 discriminates the mullet samples into two groups; the first was L. tade, and the second belonged to L. macrolepis and M. engeli. In addition, a total of 18 samples of mullets consisting of 8 samples of the L. macrolepis, 2 samples of the L tade, and 8 samples of the M. engeli were successfully amplified from the 5' region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COX1) gene using a pair of primers (Fish F1 and Fish R1). Furthermore, a total of 7 haplotype sequences were produced from the ingroup where L. tade has one haplotype, L. macrolepis and M. engeli had three haplotypes, respectively. The genetic distance analysis showed that the interspecific distance was 0.38% and intraspecific was 8.2%. Therefore, the COI gene successfully discriminated against the mullet into three valid species.

Spatial distribution pattern, bionomic, and demographic parameters of a new invasive species of armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae) in maize of South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3576-3582. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, has reportedly been found in Indonesia since 2019. The main hosts of this new invading insect are food crops and several other crops. This study aimed to examine the spatial distribution pattern, bionomic, and demographic parameters for developing a sampling plan and strategy to control the pest. The study was conducted by observing the total population of S. frugiperda on nine plots of maize plants weekly. The development of S. frugiperda from egg to adult was also observed in plastic containers (diameter of 4 cm x height of 8 cm) fed with maize in controlled room conditions (temperature = 29 ± 2.1°C, 74 ± 10.1% RH). Observations were made on several bionomic and demographic parameters. The results of the study showed that the S. frugiperda distributes in groups, and each group spreads with a low grouping rate. The life cycle of S. frugiperda occurs for an average of 25.11 days with a range of 24-26 days. The net reproduction rate (Ro) of S. frugiperda was 422.46 individuals/parent/generation. S. frugiperda‘s intrinsic rate of increase was 0.22 individuals/parent/day. The length of generation (T) and S. frugiperda doubling time (DT) were 26.59 and 3.04 days, respectively. This species has survived well on the maize in the new habitat, so it will threaten the food crops, especially the maize. A sampling plan can be developed based on spatial distribution parameters to monitor population density to implement a control threshold and control measures from the early stage of maize during adult pre-emergence.

Lipolytic bacteria can produce nanobioremediation materials that encourage researchers to explore the diversity of these bacteria. Lipolytic bacteria were isolated from spent bleaching earth (SBE). Bacteria isolates were screened for their lipolytic index and crude lipase activity. Strain with the highest lipolytic index and crude lipase activity were identified using the 16S rRNA gene as genetic markers. The maximum likelihood method in MEGA6 software has been used to analyze the relationship of the isolate. The results showed that strain SBE01 had the highest lipolytic index and crude lipase activity of 8.8 ± 0.7 mm and 5.7 U/mL, respectively. Based on 16S rRNA gene analysis, the isolate was identified as Moraxella sp. Phylogenetic tree was shown that SBE01 isolate was closely related to Moraxella osloensis. Moraxella sp. has the potential to be used as a bioremediation agent from oil-contaminated environment.

Inter-primer binding site (iPBS) markers reveal the population genetic diversity and structure of tropical climbing Cissampelopsis (Asteraceae) in Thailand. Biodiversitas 21: 3919-3928. Cissampelopsis is a small climbing tropical Asian genus of Asteraceae-Senecioneae. In Thailand, the genus is represented by two species, C. corifolia and C. Volubilis, distributed through the mountain evergreen forest. Study on the genetic diversity and structure of populations of both Cissampelopsis species provide better understanding of the biology and pattern of species diversification in the genus. To identify the genetic diversity, we used the inter-primer binding site (iPBS) retrotransposon system, in 96 accessions of Cissampelopsis species collected from different regions in Thailand. A total of 120 iPBS bands were scored as presence? absence characters. Results from UPGMA and PCoA analyses indicated that C. corifolia and C. volubilis are different species. Genetic diversity and genetic differentiation among and within populations of C. volubilis is higher than C. corifolia. Molecular Variance (AMOVA) analysis of both species indicated that the genetic variance value within populations is higher than among populations of each species. Bayesian model-based STRUCTURE analysis detected two gene pools for both Cissampelopsis and showed admixture within individuals. Differences among the two Cissampelopsis species, in total diversities and levels of population differentiation, indicated that the genetic structure of Cissampelopsis populations are congruent with long-lived perennial habit with regional distribution, even for congeneric species, may vary considerably. This study suggests the effectiveness of the iPBS marker system to estimate the population genetic diversity and structure of Cissampelopsis genotypes.
