The production function and profitability analysis of Gracilaria sp. seaweed polyculture with milkfish (Chanos chanos) and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Biodiversitas 21: 4747-4754. Gracilaria seaweed is the main ingredient for making agar as a source of food and industry. Gracilaria culture in ponds with a polyculture system is one of the potential seaweed cultivation in Indonesia. This study was aimed to analyze the productivity, production input optimation, and profitability on the polyculture system of Gracilaria sp. with milkfish (Chanos chanos) and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). The survey method was used to notify the seaweed farmers from Indramayu, West Java, Indonesia. The study data were obtained from all seaweed polyculture farmers populations in the observational location by census containing two farmers groups, namely Gracilaria sp. with milkfish and black tiger shrimp (GMS symbol) and Gracilaria sp. with milkfish (GM symbol) polyculture system. This study resulted that GMS polyculture system obtained higher productivity than GM polyculture system. The GMS business scale was in the increasing return to scale condition, while GM was in the decreasing return to scale condition. The optimal condition of GMS polyculture system was performed by improving the black tiger shrimp seed input, milkfish seed, and milkfish feed, besides declining the working hours, while GM polyculture system was performed by decreasing the milkfish feed and farmers working hours. When the optimal condition is applied to the GMS polyculture system, then the business profit reaches five times, resulting in an increased profit margin of 112% with R/C becomes 134%. Meanwhile, GM polyculture system only reaches 65% business profit, 65% profit margin, and 25% R/C. The investment payback period from both polyculture systems became shorter. The application of production input efficiency on the GMS polyculture system is more prospective than GM polyculture system.

Species diversity, composition, and heterospecific associations of trees in three altitudinal gradients in Bird's Head Peninsula, Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3596-3605.  The region of Bird's Head Peninsula, West Papua, Indonesia has a high level of vegetation diversity distributed from coastal to mountain areas. Yet, the information regarding this diversity is limited. We studied species diversity, composition, and heterospecific association of trees in three altitudinal gradients in Bird's Head Peninsula to reveal the biotic phenomenon in the region. Systematic random sampling was applied during data collection in three locations representing lower, middle, and upper altitudes of natural tropical forest. We applied diversity indices to investigate taxonomic diversity, importance value index (IVI) to reveal floristic composition and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) for heterospecific associations. In total, we recorded 30 families, 44 genera, and 66 species in the three locations. There were 20 families in lower area and each 15 families in middle and upper areas while the genera per site were 29 in lower, 20 in the middle, and 18 in the upper. The number of species found in lower, middle, and upper areas was 35 species, 24 species, and 27 species respectively. The research revealed that the taxonomic diversity of trees generally decreases as the elevation increases in terms of family, genera, and species level. The dominant species was also different across elevation gradients in which the dominant tree had a different pattern in the three locations between understory and upperstory. Moreover, the gradient of elevation has shaped the type of tree communities, suggesting interactions and associations among tree species. Of all species recorded, 26 species were listed in IUCN Red List with two species were under data deficient, 20 species were least concern, three species were near threatened, and one species was vulnerable.

Abstract. Sugiwati S, Hanafi M, Lioe HN, Suhartono MT. 2020.  Effect of growth conditions on ?-glucosidase production by local isolate of Aspergillus niger using rice bran substrate. Biodiversitas 21: 4058-4066. ?-Glucosidase is the family of glycosyl hydrolase that have potential role in various food industry, such as in tea, wine and vanilla industries to increase the aroma and production of isoflavone aglycons in soybean flour. The present work produced ?-glucosidase from local isolate of Aspergillus niger InaCC F57 under solid-state fermentation (SSF) using rice bran substrate. Fermentation process was made in various conditions with respect to carbon source as substrate, initial pH of fermentation medium, incubation time, water to substrate ratio, fermentation temperature, and addition of Mandels mineral salts solution. The results showed that activity of ?-glucosidase was best at, i.e., 2.45 U/mL, with the use of rice bran as substrate. Furthermore, optimum condition for the highest production of ?-glucosidase occurred at pH 2.0, incubation time of 5 days, water to substrate ratio of 1.5: 1, and incubation temperature of 32°C. Additionally, in optimum fermentation conditions, production of ?-glucosidase could be enhanced up to 26.22% with the presence of Mandels mineral salts solution as compared to the control.

The study aimed to determine the land productivity, economic feasibility, and soybean cultivar which is suitable for intercropped with maize in maize production center on dryland-upland in East Java, Indonesia. The study was conducted in Semanding and Merakurak Sub-districts, Tuban District, East Java, Indonesia at the end of rainy season (March-July 2019). The study used a factorial randomized block design with three replications. The first factor was planting patterns, namely: soybean intercropping with maize, maize monoculture, and soybean monoculture. The second factor was soybean cultivars, namely: Argomulyo, Dena 1, and Dega 1. The maize variety used was NK Hybrid 212. The result of study indicated that by intercropping and selecting appropriate cultivar, soybean could be developed on dryland-upland area. Soybean intercropping with plant spacing of 30 cm x 15 cm and two seeds per-hill and maize in double row with plant spacing of (40 x 20) cm x 200 cm and one seed per-hill was able to produce maize seeds yield as high as maize increase LER by 1.69, and increase farming income. Dena 1 intercropping with maize was able to provide higher benefit, economic feasibility, and land-use efficiency than Argomulyo and Dega 1, even though Dega 1 had the strongest competitiveness, and Argomulyo had the higher soybean yield.

Abstract. Iskandar BS, Iskandar J, Partasasmita R, Irawan B. 2020. Various medicinal plants traded in the village market of Karangwangi Village, Southern Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4440-4456. In the past traditional village, the market was predominantly found in many villages of West Java. The village markets were usually held once a week. The traders of the village market mainly were from both local villagers or people coming from the nearby towns. Nowadays, the village markets of West Java have dramatically decreased because of the existence of permanent shops (toko) and minimarkets in the rural areas that operate daily. However, in some villages, such as Karangwangi Village, Cidaun Sub-district, Southern Cianjur, West Java, village markets still exist. In the Karangwangi Village market, various plants are commonly traded, such as staple foods, vegetables, fruits, spices, and traditional medicines. The purpose of this study was to discuss the various traditional medicinal plants traded in the village market, some diseases treated by the various herbal plants, various plant parts used for traditional medicines, and original medicinal plants in the village markets of Karangwangi Village. The research method used was qualitative, with data collection carried out by observation, by recording various traditional medicinal plants traded in the village market, and by interviewing informants regarding the use of each medicinal plant species for the treatment of diseases and the origin of plant traded in village markets. The results of the study showed that 35 species representing 23 families of the medicinal plant were documented to be traded in the traditional village markets of Karangwangi Village. These plants are predominantly used to treat 20 kinds of diseases and other disturbance conditions, namely anemia, cough, fever, diabetes, wound, gastritis, malaria, bruised, supplement, toothache, kidney disease, mouth sores, stomachache, high blood pressure, postpartum healing, low back pain, urinary disease, rich breastfeeding produce, dermatitis, and gastroenteritis. Plant parts used for medicinal ingredients in the form of leaf, fruit, bulb, rhizome, root, seed, and shoot. Some medicinal plants have been known to have dual function, such as medicine and vegetables (13 species (36.36%)), medicines and herbs (12 species (34.28 %)), medicines and spices (10 species (28.57 %)), medicines and fruits (8 species (22.85 %)), medicines and staple food (3 species (8.57 %)), medicines, vegetables and spices (1 species (2.85 %)), and medicine and to betel ingredient (1 species (3.03%)). Most of the origin of medicinal plants traded in the village market is from the village with 23 species (65.71%), from cities with 9 species (25.71%), and from both villages and cities with 3 species (8.57 %). On this basis, it can be concluded that the traditional village market has played an important role not only for social-economic interests but also for biodiversity conservation, including biological ingredients for traditional medicines of the rural communities.

Short Communication: The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) for identification of batoids collected from landing sites in Medan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 5414-5421.  Batoids are member of Elsamoranch subclass which consist of many species. Most of batoids species are overexploited, especially in Medan Indonesia. Up to presents, the information about diversity of rays on the east coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia was very limited. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the diversity of rays on the east coast of North Sumatra. We examined the morphological trait of 82 individuals of batoid from three landing sites on the east coast of North Sumatra, namely: Tanjung Balai, Belawan, and Percut, then identify its species based on determination key. After that, we collected pectoral muscle tissue from an individual in each species which successfully identified to extract its genomic DNA. Molecular based identification was carried out by using DNA fragment form COI gene. The successfully amplificated COI gene DNA fragment then was sequenced and analyzed. Based on morphological trait, we successfully identifying nine species of batoid, which is Maculabatis gerrardi, Gymnura poecilura, Dasyatis zugei, Brevitrygon heterura, Neotrygon kuhlii, Hemitrygon bennettii, Rhinobatos jimbaranensis, Rhinoptera javanica, and Taeniura lymma. The result of identification based on COI gene DNA fragment was in congruent with morphological-based identification based on data BLAST-N and genetic distance value within same species. The nucleotide diversity within same species ranged from 0-15 nucleotide variants.

Vegetation structure and floristic composition of tree species in the habitat of Scaphium macropodum in Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3025-3033. Scaphium macropodum (Miq.) Beumee Ex K Heyne is a member of Malvaceae tree species and globally recognized as malva nut and locally known as ‘kembang semangkok’, ‘tempayang’, ‘merpayang’ or ‘kepayang’. The nut of S. macropodum has many benefits for medicinal purposes, yet destructive extraction of this tree species has led them to extinction. Among its natural distribution in Indonesia, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia is known as its original range, but there is limited information about the existence of this species. This study aimed to determine the vegetation structure of some tree species in the habitat of S. macropodum in Sikundur, Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia. Purposive sampling technique was employed by creating line transect at some forest areas where the population of S. macropodum is known to grow naturally. Four line transects with each transect consisting of five plots with nested plots within were established to record data at four growth stages, resulting in 80 plots in total. The results showed that the Important Value Index (IVI) of S. macropodum within the floristic community at the studied area was 21.98, 13.85, 27.30, and 39.60 for tree, pole, sapling, and seedlings stages, respectively. The Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (H) were 3.80, 3.70, 3.06 and 2.45, Index of evenness (E) are 0.94, 0.92, 0.86, 0.77 and the Index of Richness (R) are 11.76, 10.73, 6.59, 4.10 for tree, pole, sapling, and seedlings stages. This result suggests that the natural population of S. macropodum in Sikundur forest was still in good condition at all stages from tree to seedling.

Diversity of butterflies (Lepidoptera) across rainforest transformation systems in Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 5119-5127. The high rate of land conversion has put pressure on biodiversity, especially in the tropics. The lowlands of Sumatra, for example, are dominated by increasingly extensive areas of oil palm and rubber monoculture plantations, while rainforests are continuously vanishing. The status of many rainforest animal populations, including iconic insect groups such as butterflies, is largely unclear. With a rapid assessment approach, we studied butterflies along land-use gradients from lowland rainforest, via jungle rubber plantations (rubber agroforest system), to monocultures of rubber and oil palm in Jambi Province, Sumatra. Butterflies were caught in a nested replication design at eight research plots at each of the forest, jungle rubber, and rubber and oil palm locations. Butterfly abundance was the highest in the rainforest (204.3±82.1), slightly lower in the jungle rubber and oil palm areas (164.9±61 and 169.3±94.9, respectively), and the lowest in the rubber plantation (108.8±38.5). Similarly, butterfly species richness was the highest in the forest and jungle rubber areas (47.1±7.7 and 38.8±7.6, respectively), followed by the oil palm area (33.3±9.8), and the lowest in the rubber plantation (26.1±9.1). Likewise, Shannon-Wiener diversity was the highest in the rainforest, at an intermediate level in the jungle rubber, and lowest in the oil palm and rubber plantations. Butterfly community composition in the rainforest was very different from that in the other three land-use systems, in which it was similar. Overall, the study demonstrates that rainforest butterfly communities cannot be sustained in agricultural systems, highlighting the importance of rainforests for conserving the diversity of arthropods.

Herbivore insects and predatory arthropods in freshwater swamp rice field in South Sumatra, Indonesia sprayed with bioinsecticides of entomopathogenic fungi and abamectin. Biodiversitas 21: 3755-3768. Herbivore insect population and predatory arthropods in rice field may be effected by the application entomopathogenic fungi or synthetic insecticide. The objective of this research was to analyze individual quantity of herbivore insects and predatory arthropod inhabiting freshwater swamp rice fields treated with bioinsecticides and abamectin (commercial insecticide). This research was conducted in the freshwater swamp rice field located in Village Pelabuhan Dalam, Sub District Pemulutan, District Ogan Ilir, and South Sumatra. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Block Design consisted of four plots of treatment. The research used the bioinsecticides made from entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Cordyceps military), and abamectin. Sampling to collect arthropods inhabiting rice canopy was also conducted using an entomological net in the study locations. This research found 12 families of herbivore insects with 22 species dominated by Nilaparvata lugens and Leptocorisa acuta and 32 species of spider belonged to eight families dominated by Tetragnatha virescens and Oxyopes matiensis. The species diversity of spider was higher in the plots of the bioinsecticide compared to that of the abamectin. Predatory insects found belonged to 14 species belonged to eight families dominated by species of Ophionea nigrofasciata, Verania discolor, and Paedorus fuscipe. The abundance of predatory insects in plots sprayed with the bioinsecticides was higher compared to that of the abamectin plot. The abundance and species diversity of predatory arthropod sprayed with bioinsecticide of B. bassiana, M. anisopliae, and C. militaris did not decrease, while the population of herbivore insect tended to decrease.

Abstract

Abstract. Arpiwi NL, Muksin IK, Kartini NL. 2020. Essential oil from Cymbopogon nardus and repellant activity against Aedes aegypti. Biodiversitas 21: 3873-3878. Cymbopogon nardus (L.) Rendle is an aromatic grass from the Poaceae family that produces essential oil mainly in the leaves. The essential oil from C. nardus is known as citronella oil has repellent activity. This research aimed to quantify the oil content of C. nardus leaves, to analyze the essential oil quality, to analyze the repellent activity of lotion with different concentrations of citronella oil against Aedes aegypti, and to examine the quality of formulated lotions. The oil was extracted from leaves using steam distillation, and the quality was examined according to the Indonesian National Standard. The citronella oil was formulated into a lotion with five concentrations (0, 2, 3, 4, 5% w/w). Repellent activity of the lotions against Ae. aegypti was tested using screened cage test method under laboratory conditions. Lotion quality was analyzed for pH, viscosity, homogeneity, and sensorial assessments. The result showed that the oil yield of C. nardus leaves was 0.9% w/w. The color of the oil was pale yellow, specific weight was 0.8819, the refraction index was 1.464, total geraniol was 72.71%, citronellal content was 49.14%, and solubility in 80% alcohol 1:2 was clear. The repellent activity of lotions with citronella oil was concentration-dependent, where a concentration of 5% gave the highest protection. The quality of formulated lotions met the standard and the lotions were nonirritant.
