Biodiversitas 21: 5605-5613. This study aims to determine the biomass of reef shark and fish in South Morotai Waters in North Maluku, Indonesia. The Audible Stationary Count and Underwater Visual Census method were used to collect the data of reef sharks and fish. Seven and one site locations of coral reef and shark ecosystems were surveyed and, the data were analyzed using regression analysis to obtain a correlation between the variables. The three reef sharks found were Carcharhinus melanopterus, Triaenodon obesus, and Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos. Biomass estimation of reef sharks and fish ranged from 0.59 to 19.97 kg/ha and 30.95 kg/ha to 49.92 kg/ha, consisting of 8 families. In the area of aggregations, both species were found in 7 sites, and the population of reef shark amounted to 86.96 kg/ha and fish was around 55.705 kg/ha, consisting of 9 families. There was a positive relationship between the biomass of reef shark and fish in South Morotai waters, and the index of determination was 0.8043, showing that the biomass of reef shark was influenced by that of fish. These results indicated the importance of biomass in determining the functional composition and diversity of reef shark and fish.

Abstract. Dinilhuda A, Akbar AA, Jumiati, Herawati H. 2020. Potential of mangrove ecosystem as carbon storage for global warming mitigation. Biodiversitas 21: 5353-5362. The mangrove ecosystem in Karimunting Bay of West Kalimantan, Indonesia is one of the conservation areas with an area of 138.2 ha. Vegetation making up of that mangrove ecosystem is dominated by Avicennia marina. The existence of mangroves has a role in carbon storage. The ability to store carbon in mangrove forest ecosystems is four times greater than in other tropical forests around the world. Mangrove stems have the greatest ability in storing carbon by up to 55.52%. The research objective was to analyze the potential for carbon storage in the fringe mangrove ecosystem which was dominated by A. marina. This research method is based on a survey of vegetation density in the field. The survey was carried out in Karimunting Bay in three parts of the bay, north, central, and south. Each part of the bay consists of two locations, namely at the front of the breakwater towards the sea and behind the breakwater towards the land. Each location consisted of a plot of 10 x 10 with five replications. The vegetation parameters measured are the types of growth forms, the mangrove ecosystem species, and the diameter and height of the trees, as well as environmental parameters (pH, temperature, and salinity). Destructive method was used on A. marina stems for estimating analysis of mangrove carbon storage in the laboratory. A. marina stem samples were used to test the carbon content with LOI (Lost on Ignition) analysis. Analysis of changes in mangrove area is based on the 2009 and 2019 landscape images. The results show that the mangrove ecosystem of Karimunting Bay has a total density of 177,480 individuals/ha. The amount of carbon storage reached 99,231  mg/ha in 2019 and predictions of total carbon storage over the last 10 years are as much as 13,717,951 tons. Deposits of carbon in fringe mangrove illustrate the carbon dioxide absorption potential of 36,390,608 tons of CO2. The amount of CO2 absorption in fringe mangrove ecosystem type plays a role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with a conditional target according to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2030 of 834 million tons of CO2 to prevent temperature increases.

Codon usage bias of oil palm genome was reported employing several indices, including GC content, relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU), the effective number of codons (ENC), and codon adaptation index (CAI). Unimodal distribution of GC content was observed and matched with non-grass monocots characteristics. Correspondence analysis (COA) on synonymous codon usage bias showed that the main axis was strongly driven by GC content. The ENC and neutrality plot of oil palm genes indicating that natural selection played more vital role compared to mutational bias on shaping codon usage bias. A positive correlation between calculated CAI and experimental data of oil palm gene expression was detected indicating good ability of this index. Finally, eighteen codons were defined as “optimal codons” that may provide a useful reference for heterogeneous expression and genome editing studies.

Biodiversitas 21: 5263-5269. Broccoli is an important vegetable worldwide, with expanding markets and opportunities in Asia. In Indonesia, there is demand from high-end hotels, restaurants, and export markets, but the local supply is low quality and low yielding. Crown cuts are typically small and misshapen as the varieties are grown are not adapted to local environments. This study targeted new broccoli varieties to identify those best adapted to environmental stresses in Bali, Indonesia, using two-site replicated field experiments. Experiments were undertaken in two regions in Bali (Bedugul and Tabanan) using 13 commercial varieties that included heat-sensitive varieties and others identified as heat-tolerant in trials on the East Coast of the USA. The trials evaluated the varieties for crown initiation, days to maturity, crown size at harvest, crown diameter, and overall performance. The study demonstrated that all 13 varieties could be used for broccoli production in the Bedugul region (1200 m a.s.l. altitude), with Castle Dome being the best performer due to its earlier maturity and large high-quality crown. The varieties Bay Meadows, Belstar, Imperial, and Sarasota could be used in the Tabanan region.

Abstract. Rahma N, Hasan H, Ratnasari A, Wahid I. 2020. The application of novel methods of Animal Barrier Screen and Kelambu Trap for mosquitoe’s surveillance in South and West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4787-4794. Mosquito’s surveillance requires effective protocols to catch mosquitoes in a large number of species and individuals while safe for humans. The effectiveness of two novel trap methods was compared during dry and wet seasons in rural (Maros), semi-urban (North Toraja) both in South Sulawesi Province, and rural with coastal areas (Pasangkayu) in West Sulawesi Province. Animal Barrier Screen (ABS) is a barrier screen placed near livestock, while Kelambu Trap (KT) is an innovative form of mosquito net. Both trap innovations showed effective in catching mosquitoes, but ABS was more effective in trapping the mosquitos (8,589 individuals) than KT (8,350 individuals). In contrast, the species caught were more diverse in KT (43 species, nine genera) than that in ABS (36 species, seven genera). During the wet season, ABS and KT caught 4,848 individuals (27 species, five genera) and 4,749 individuals (36 species, eight species), respectively. Mosquitoes were the most abundant in Northern Toraja (6,338 individuals), followed by in Maros (5,566 individuals) then Pasangkayu (5,035 individuals), but mosquito diversity was the highest in Pasangkayu (nine genera, 33 species) compared to that in Northern Toraja (six genera, 27 species) and Maros (five genera, 25 species). Based on the effectiveness of this trap, innovative insecticide can be added into ABS and KT traps then placed in the field. The number of mosquitoes can be significantly reduced so that it can also lower the potential spread of the mosquitoes-born viruses.

An assessment of the reproduction, predation, and nesting behavior of Sulawesi Masked-owl (Tyto rosenbergii) in oil palm plantation: A case study of West and Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 5685-5689. The quality and quantity of yield in palm plantations are reduced due to inevitable factors such as pests, diseases, and weeds. Furthermore, owls (Tytonidae) play a role as potential predators to control rats, the major pest. Therefore, this study aims to observe the reproduction patterns, predation, and nesting behavior of Tyto rosenbergii. To achieve this, direct observation and the installation of a camera trap in the nest box was adopted. Furthermore, a predation test was carried out by feeding the owls with rats daily in a cage measuring 4m x 8m x 6m. The results showed that the number of eggs produced ranged from 2 to 6, with an average of 3.85. Also, the Percentage of hatching ranges between 0-100% with an average of 80.77%, and that of chicks that survive to the fully feathered is 51%. In addition, T. rosenbergii was able to prey on 1-4 rats per night, and its activity mostly occurs outside the cage than inside, except when they had a reproductive season.

Abstract. Lakitan B, Kartika K. 2020. Population density, multiple harvesting, and ability of Ipomoea reptans to compete with native weeds at tropical wetlands. Biodiversitas 21: 4376-4383. Despite as a nutritious, fast-growing, and well-adapted leafy vegetable at tropical wetlands; Ipomoea reptans has not been intensively cultivated yet. This study was designed for increasing productivity of this vegetable by optimizing population density, extending harvesting period, and its ability to compete with native weeds at tropical wetlands. Bottom wet culture system (BWCS) was implemented by placing all pots within 2 m x 4 m experimental pool filled with water to 2-cm depth to make sure bottom part of the substrate within each pot was continuously water-saturated. Results of this study indicated that despite fluctuated yield at each harvest, accumulative yields after five consecutive harvests were not significantly different among population densities from 14 to 71 plants per m2. Yet, quality of yield in most cases was better in lower population density treatment (14 plants per m2), as indicated by SPAD value and marketable size of individual plants. Frequent NPK fertilizer application was effective for increasing yield. The first harvest was done at 4 weeks after seed sowing; thereafter, the plants were routinely re-harvested at about every week. This fast-growing vegetable also exhibited ability to compete with native weeds commonly found at tropical wetlands at density up to 11.3 mg cm-2.

The chlorophyll contents and growth performances of West Java (Indonesia)  jobtears (Coix lacryma-jobi) accessions under low light intensity conditions. Biodiversitas 21: 5178-5185. The research was carried out to study the shading tolerance of five jobtears (Coix lacryma-jobi L) accession collected from Bandung, Kuningan, Garut, Sukabumi, and Sumedang West Java Indonesia. The existence of shade-tolerant jobtears was important to increasing its cultivation for food diversification effort. The research was conducted in the Botany Division, Research Center for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences. The experimental design was a Randomized Complete Block Design with two factors. The first factors were 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% shading intensity. The second factors were five West Java jobtears accession, namely Bandung, Kuningan, Garut, Sukabumi, and Sumedang accession. The shading intensity set up artificially by the black plastic net. Jobtears seeds planted on planting beds on 70x100 planting distance. The variable observed included microclimate, plant growth, leaf chlorophyll content, and grain production. The result indicated that jobtears accession showed differences in growth and production characters. Low light intensity significantly affected plant growth and production. The plant height, leaf number, and chlorophyll content variables increased until 50% shading intensity and then decreased by 75% shading. Plant production decreased by the increased of shading intensity. The Bandung and Garut accessions can be determined as a potential low-light tolerant accession due to its better growth and production compared with others and the lowest percentage of decreased production. For further research, the Garut and Bandung accession can be used as a genetic biodiversity source for shading tolerance breeding efforts.

Abstract. Pamoengkas P, Rachmat HH, Khalifa N. 2020. The growth of Shorea leprosula at various planting distances and slopes in Gunung Dahu Research Forest, Bogor, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4396-4404. Shorea leprosula Miq. is one of the species of Dipterocarpaceae family which has great potential to be developed as plantation forestry. This research aimed to investigate the effect of planting distance and slope on the growth of S. leprosula in Gunung Dahu Research Forest, Bogor, Indonesia. Growth variables in terms of height and diameter, and environmental factors were observed in S. leprosula stands at various planting distances and slopes. Analysis results showed that plot with planting distance of 4x6 m produced the best growth of S. leprosula than other planting distances, with the largest increment of diameter and height of 1.49 cm/year and 0.82 m/year, respectively. Slope class did not affect the diameter growth, but it affected the height growth. Slope class flat (0-8%) exhibited height growth of S. leprosula of 0.81 cm/year, which was better compared to other slope classes. Interaction between planting distance of 4x6 m and slope class of rather steep (15-25%) produced the best growth of S. leprosula compared to other interactions with diameter and height increment of 1.64 cm/year and 0.83 m/year, respectively.

Abstract. Ginantra IK, Muksin IK, Suaskara IBM, Joni M. 2020. Diversity and distribution of mollusks at three zones of mangrove in Pejarakan, Bali, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4636-4643. The diversity of mangrove species in mangrove zonations on the coast of Pejarakan plays an important role in the existence of faunal diversity, including those from mollusks. Mollusks are the dominant phylum associated with mangrove habitats, in addition to the species of the Crustacean subphylum. This research aimed to determine the diversity of mollusks and their distribution patterns in three mangrove zones in Pejarakan, Buleleng District, Bali Province, Indonesia. Data collection was conducted by establishing sampling plots across three mangrove zones, i.e. seaward zone, middle zone, and landward zone. There were 23 sampling plots in total with size of each plot was 1x1m. The species and number of individuals of each species of mollusks were recorded in each quadrat plot. The diversity of mollusks was calculated using the Shannon-Wiener index, evenness index, and dominance index, while the pattern of distribution of mollusks was measured using the Morisita index. The results of the study found 27 species of mollusks, consisting of 19 species from Gastropods group, 7 species from Bivalvia group and 1 species from Polyplacophora (chiton). The seaward zone showed the highest species diversity, while the landward zone had the lowest. Terebralia palustris had the highest abundance with 217 individuals/m2 and was distributed in the three mangrove zones. Planaxis sulcatus showed the highest abundance (87 ind./m2) in the seaward zone, and Telescopium telescopium showed a fairly high abundance and were distributed in the mid zone and the landward zone. In general, mollusks in the mangrove area of Pejarakan was distributed in a group/clustered pattern. The data from this research can serve as a reference in mangrove forest conservation efforts and mangrove forest used for ecotourism.
