There is little documentation of bamboo on Lombok. Non-native Indonesian bamboos have been reported occurring in Lombok. As such, suspicious bamboo specimens and information in those reports need to be examined and possibly re-determined. This study aimed to provide updated taxonomical information of bamboo species in Lombok and to investigate the accuracy of previous studies regarding the existence of several non-native Indonesian bamboo species on the island (i.e. they do not have original distribution in Indonesia). Data from fieldwork were combined with specimens in Herbarium Bogoriense to create a synopsis of bamboo in Lombok and to develop an identification key to the species. Eleven species of bamboos in Lombok were reported from this study, namely Bambusa glaucophylla, B. maculata, B. multiplex, B. spinosa, B. vulgaris, Dendrocalamus asper, Gigantochloa apus, G. atter, Schizostachyum brachycladum, S. lima, and Thyrsostachys siamensis. Several doubtful species (B. albustiata, B. ventricosa, Guadua angustifolia, S. jaculans, Pseudosasa japonica) were presented to clarify the existence of a non-native Indonesian bamboo in Lombok. Moreover, there is not enough evidence to state Dinochloa sp. occurred in Lombok. The results of this study can be used by stakeholders for bamboo identification and as the baseline taxonomic account for future studies and conservation of bamboo species in Lombok.

Morphometric analysis of Harpodon nehereus, Harpiosquilla raphidea, and Scylla serrata in the coastal waters of Tarakan, North Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4829-4838. The Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus), harpiosquillid mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea), and giant mud crab (Scylla serrata) are among the commercially important fishery resources in Tarakan Island, North Kalimantan, Indonesia. This requires sustainable fisheries management to be in place since these resources have now become the main targets of fishing industry. However, sustainable fisheries management of these species is difficult because less is known about the species particularly its condition, fatness, and well-being. Hence, the current study was conducted to analyze the morphometric characteristics in order to deduce fishing pressure of the fish species in Tarakan waters. Data collection was achieved through field between September 2017 and April 2018. Morphometric characteristics (length, weight, width, and thickness) were collected throughout the sampling period. The length-weight relationship and condition factor were then estimated using the morphometric measurements. The data were then statistically analyzed either or combination of t-test, Chi-square, and the Mann-Whitney tests. The study revealed that all the three fish species (H. nehereus, Ha. raphidea, and S. serrata) populations in Tarakan waters were dominated by male individuals (M:F ratio; 1:0.81; 1:0.63; and 1:0.66, respectively). The length-weight analysis showed all fish were found to be smaller in size and exhibited negative allometric growth patterns. The analysis of condition factor also showed that the fish were dominated by flat and very flat body shapes. The current study suggests that the fish species may encounter some kinds of ecological disturbances that selectively removed female fish and larger individuals from the populations. However, more studies are needed to accurately identify those factors so that plans to effectively address the root cause could be incorporated in the sustainable fishery management tools of the fish resources.

Abstract. Janse van Rensburg PD, Siebert SJ, Masehela T, Ellis S, Van den Berg J. 2020. Diversity patterns of plants and arthropods in soybean agroecosystems in the grassland biome of South Africa. Biodiversitas 21: 5559-5570. Soybean is widely cultivated in the grassland biome of South Africa (ca.  800 000 ha per annum). Yet the possible effects that large-scale cultivation of soybean has on biodiversity in adjacent habitat are not fully understood. This study aimed to describe the plant and arthropod species assemblages and diversity patterns within these soybean agroecosystems. Surveys were conducted inside soybean fields, field boundaries (transition zones between soybean fields and adjacent habitat), and adjacent pasture. An adapted D-vac was used to sample arthropods in the different zones, while plant surveys were conducted by means of fixed width (2 m) line transect. A total of 320 plant species (4910 specimens) and 373 arthropod morpho-species (9216 specimens) were recorded. Soybean fields had significantly lower plant and arthropod diversity than the adjacent habitats. Plant species diversity was similar in the field boundary and adjacent pasture. Significantly higher species richness and abundance of arthropods were found in the boundary than the pasture. These results show that the cultivation of soybean and the associated agricultural practices had no adverse effects on biodiversity patterns in the adjacent habitats. However, the boundary dominated by alien plant species did contain a significantly different plant species composition from the pasture. This difference was also mirrored by unique assemblages of arthropods. This suggests that disturbance resulting from soybean cultivation contributed to species losses and gains that maintained diversity in the field boundary but changed its plant and arthropod species composition. No effect was found in the pasture beyond the boundary (> 50 m). High diversity, but unique species assemblages of plants and arthropods in the boundary and pasture suggest that these habitats may have important conservation value in soybean agroecosystems by supporting ecosystem functions and services.

Pharmacognostic, chemical and mucolytic activity study of Malva pseudolavatera Webb & Berthel. and Malva sylvestris L. (Malvaceae) leaf extracts, grown in Ecuador. Biodiversitas 21: 4755-4763.  Among the cultivated and/or native plant species of Ecuador, are those belonging to Malvaceae. Of these, the most traditionally used are Malva pseudolavatera Webb & Berthel. and Malva sylvestris L., which are grown and sold in indigenous markets. Various articles have been published for M. sylvestris about its chemical composition and pharmacological properties; however, M. pseudolavatera lacks references and is the most commercialized in Ecuador. Therefore, this work sets the following objective: To carry out a comparative study of the pharmacognostic, chemical and mucolytic activity of the species M. pseudolavatera and M. sylvestris. The species studied were collected in the province of Chimborazo. Extracts were obtained with different solvents: water, hexane and 80% ethanol. The aqueous extract was used to determine the mucolytic activity; the hexane and alcoholic extracts were analyzed by the coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system. It was found that M. pseudolavatera has a very similar chemical composition to M. sylvestris; The presence of fatty acids, di and triterpenoids, phytosterols and abundant amino acids was detected. Both species showed an important mucolytic effect, the activity of M. pseudolavatera being higher than the highest doses tested. These studies provide scientific data that allow demonstrating the high potentiality of extracts from the leaves of two Malva species as sources of plant material for possible research and development of phytotherapeutic products with mucolytic and gastroprotective activity in correspondence with their uses in traditional Ecuadorian herbal medicine.

Genetic variation and identification of single nucleotide polymorphism of insulin-like growth factor- 1 gene in Tilapia guineensis Biodiversitas 21: 5317-5321. Tilapia guineensis is an important cichlid species of West African coastal waters with good nutritional, economic, and aquaculture relevance. The knowledge of the genetic basis of variation in growth traits in Tilapia fish is of great importance to support genetic improvement in the context of aquaculture. In this study, regions of the Tilapia guineensis IGF-1 gene were sequenced, aligned and compared across populations to identify single nucleotide polymorphism and genetic diversity among four populations of T. guineensis in South-west Nigerian coastal waters. A total of thirty-four SNPs were identified across the studied populations and were detected in the forward reaction with twenty-two transversions and twelve transitions. Badagry population showed the highest genetic diversity with the highest molecular diversity indices; number of polymorphic sites, pairwise differences, number of segregating sites and nucleotide diversity while the least diverse population was Pepe. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that genetic variation was mostly within populations. This finding provides more information regarding variation in insulin growth factor I of T. guineensis and will encourage association study for production traits that will inform useful selection marker for breeding program.

Starch application in the food and non-food industries is influenced by their properties. The aim of this research was to characterize the physicochemical and functional of spineless, short-spines, and long-spine sago starch. Starch morphology for all types had an oval shape with a smooth surface, which was proved by the X-ray diffraction analysis. The proximate composition did not differ for all types of sago, except the protein of spineless sago type was slightly higher but it did not affect the profile and gelatinization process. The amylose content of spineless, short spines and long spine of sago starch was 33.61 %db, 38.47 % db, and 37.59 % db, respectively; categorized as a high in amylose then tends to be stickyless. The value of peak viscosity and setback of spineless sago (7571.0 cP and 1495.0 cP) and long spines sago (7608.0 cP and 923.0 cP) were higher than the short spines sago starch (1271.0 cP and 538.0 cP). Therefore, the spineless and the long spines sago starch are suitable as thickener and fillers, while the short spines sago starch is suggested for cakes and bakery products because it will not harden when the product is cold.

Abstract. Hidayah AN, Yahya S, Sopandie D. 2020. The tolerance of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) seedlings to Al stress is enhanced by citric acid and natural peat water. Biodiversitas 21: 4850-4858. Management technology on soil containing high levels of Aluminum (Al) toxicity is still needed to be developed so that the growth and development of plants will be optimum. The aims of the research were to investigate the response of oil palm seedlings (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) toward aluminum stress, and to evaluate the effects of several exogenous compounds to improve the tolerance of oil palm. The research was conducted from September 2018 to March 2019 at PT Gunung Sejahtera Ibu Pertiwi, Central Kalimantan. This research consisted of two nutrient culture experiments, namely: Al toxicity on oil palms seedlings and the role of various exogenous compounds to improve plant tolerances. The results revealed that the solution at concentrations of 400 ?M, 800 ?M, and 1600 ?M of Al significantly inhibited root growth, increased MDA levels, decreased the photosynthesis rate, activity of CAT and APX. Therefore, a solution at concentration of 400 ?M of Al can be used as the selection level of Al tolerant oil palm varieties on nutrient culture. Ethephon at concentrations of 25 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm inhibited root and shoot growth, increased MDA levels but reduced the photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content, APX, and CAT activity. Addition of 25 ppm and 50 ppm of citric acid, 200 ppm and 300 ppm of peat water significantly increased root length, root dry weight, photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, CAT, and APX activities as MDA levels decreased. Addition of citric acid and peat water enabled seedlings of oil palm to improve their tolerance to Al stress on nutrient culture.

The fabrication of the complex bio-fertilizer for wheat cultivation based on collection bacteria of the PGPR group. Biodiversitas 21: 5021-5028. The development of new types of biological products based on microbial complexes from local bacterial strains is a great theoretical and practical interest for agriculture. It can provide an opportunity for better preservation of the natural properties of the wheat products under extreme conditions. The aim of this study was to obtain and test a biological product to increase wheat productivity in northern Kazakhstan. Our data indicate the potential of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) group bacteria for the development of biofertilizers and biopesticides. For instance, the bacteria B. mojavensis showed effectiveness in the experiments with the wheat (Astana-2 type). We observed an increase in wheat yield by 15% under conditions of artificial infection of crops with snow mold (by 2.5fold compared with the control). The results demonstrated that the B. mojavensis Lhv 97 strain can be used as an ingredient of biological products due to its activity against plant diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi.

Biodiversitas 21: 5085-5093. To articulate the ecological processes or anthropogenic impacts, it is necessary to explore various distributional patterns of benthic communities. The study was conducted to investigate the variability of macrobenthos between a ship braking and non-ship-breaking area along the Sitakunda coast, Chittagong, Bangladesh. This is the first comprehensive study that addresses the effects of ship-breaking activities on the variability of benthic communities in the study area. Macrobenthos were sampled from two different regions namely Bhatiary (ship-breaking area) and Banshbaria (non-ship-breaking area/reference area) in two different time periods (April and July) for comparative analyses. During the study period, Polychaeta was the most dominant group comprising 60% of the total macrobenthos all over the study area. Macrobenthos abundance and diversity demonstrated strong spatial variability. The mean abundance varied from 3799.75±3452.28 ind./m2 to 4107.25±2743.6 ind./m2 from the ship-breaking to non-ship-breaking area. Similar to macrobenthos abundance, the diversity index (H?) (varied between 2.45 and 1.85), species richness (D) (varied between 1.99 and 1.04), and the number of taxa (varied between 17.25 and 9.25) were higher in the non-ship-breaking area compared to the ship-breaking area. Multivariate analyses, nMDS, and CCA plot showed a distinct grouping for different location. Besides, the diversity indices of the Polychaeta community, and the presence or absence of several pollution indicator taxa revealed that Bhatiary (the ship-breaking area) was confronting deleterious effects of ship-breaking activities.

Abstract. Mursyidin DH, Khairullah I. 2020. Genetic evaluation of tidal swamp rice from South Kalimantan, Indonesia based on the agro-morphological markers. Biodiversitas 21: 4795-4803. A total of 71 cultivars of the tidal swamp rice (Oryza sativa L.), originated mainly from South Kalimantan, Indonesia, were evaluated agro-morphologically by using 26 qualitative and 13 quantitative traits. Based on these traits, this germplasm is generally low in diversity. However, three agro-morphological traits, namely the tillering abilities, seedling height, and diameter of the basal internode, shows the relatively highest diversity, shown by the Lakatan Putih, Pandak Putih, and Bayar Papuyu, respectively. The UPGMA and PCA revealed that this germplasm divided into six main clusters, where the sixth cluster is the largest with a total membership of 60 cultivars. The cluster analysis also revealed that Lakatan Siam is far separate from other cultivars. Thus, this finding might be useful in the future rice breeding programs, particularly in developing new rice cultivar for the tidal swamp areas.
