Abstract

Rat which is associated with wildlife and human life becomes important pest in agriculture, plantations, and settlements.  Currently, three species of rat pest that presence in human live is very annoying and causing damage, i.e. ricefield rat (Rattus argentiventer), house rat (R. rattus diardii), and tree rat (R. tiomanicus).  Efforts to control the three rat species are often done using chemical control (rodenticides).  The aims of this study are comparing the consumption of ricefield rats, house rats, and tree rats to rodenticide with brodifacoum active ingredient.  Besides, the aim is to understand the effectiveness of these rodenticides to control the three rats’ species.  The method used is multiple-choice test and bi-choice test for five days continuously using brodifakum and bait base (grain, rice, corn).  After five days treatment, test rats will be re-tested for three days with grain fed, then will be used for further treatment, if in good health.  Results obtained from the multiple choice test showed relatively similar results, namely that the rats chose to consume more feed than rodenticides.  The method of bi-choice test, rats preferred rice when giving feed, rather than corn and paddy. Rodenticides brodifacoum for ricefield rats is less favored on any provision of feed.  Brodifacoum is more effective in controlling house and tree rats, because the two species are less recognized and did not experience to the suspicion of rodenticide. Key words: rodenticides brodifacoum, ricefield rat, house rat, and tree rat

Abstract

Abstract

Linear Trap Barrier System (LTBS) is an innovative control technology developed using a trap system to control the movement of rice field rats. This study aims to determine the catch pattern and catch direction of rice field rats in several phases of rice plant growth. The experiment carried out was the installation of 6 LTBS units in 2 types of rice field rats habitat, i.e., village border and irrigation embankments. LTBS was installed in 3 phases of rice plant growth, i.e., vegetative, early generative, and late generative. The results showed that the installation of LTBS in both habitats had the same catch pattern, i.e., the highest percentage of rat catch occurred in the early generative phase. Likewise, the direction of rat catch in each phase of rice growth also showed the same pattern, i.e., the number of rats caught in the entry trap was relatively the same as the number of rats caught in the exit trap.

Abstract

Rats are pests that are difficult to control because they attack plants on various stages of storage. Control of mice in the paddy ecosystem can be done by the Trap Barrier System (TBS). This study aims to evaluate the installation of the Barrier System in Bener Village, Wonosari District, Klaten Regency, Central Java. The study was conducted by the method of field observation, interviews, and literature studies. The results showed that the installation of the Barrier System in Bener Village was ineffective due to the lack of farmers' attention to the components of FFB and the lack of support from farmers. Abstract

Rat is important pest especially in rice field. This program aims to find out effectiveness of using owl as biological control of rice field rat and compare them with other controls. The program is located in Bener village, Wonosari, Klaten. The method of the program are interview and observation. The result showed that the application of owl has not been use optimally. Making owl nest box that’s not according to the standard make owl reluctant to the owl nest that has been made. In addition, there is lack of public awareness of synchronously control, so it makes rat’s attack increase. Control of rat does not rely on owl as its predator, but it’s also combined with other controls like gropyokan, emposan, and toxic bait synchronously and continuously so it can achieve success in decreasing of development rice field rat. Keywords: owl, owl nest box, rice field rats

Abstract

Shrew is an animal belong to small mammals that the existence must be noticed because it has defecation behavior and their droplets often pollutes the house. Shrew can be vectors in the spread of infectious diseases to human. Shrew management has not been conducted well. Information about the most preferred bait and the effective rodenticide as a reference in controlling is not widely known.  Chemical control using rodenticides is effective enough and does not take a long time. The objective of this research was to obtain shrew preference to the types of feed that commonly consumed by human and rodenticide to control it. It can be used as bait in trapping and poisoned bait which are effective in shrew management. Baits that used were cooked rice, rice, white bread, Tenebrio larvae, cricket, chicken nugget, fish meatball, and salted fish. Choice tests were used by serving eight feeds in one cage for seven consecutive days in the first test. Then, choose four prefered feeds and tested for seven consecutive days in the second test. Acute poison (zinc phosphide) and chronic poison (coumatetralyl) mixed with the most preferred feed, then served with control feed as comparison for the third test. Result of this research showed that cricket was the most preferred feed therefore it can be used as trap bait or poisoned bait. Moreover, the other most preferred feed is Tenebrio larvae, fish meatball, and cooked rice that can be used as substitution feed if crickets are difficult to find. Zinc phosphide rodenticide is more effective than coumatetralyl to kill shrew with relatively fast on the time of death.
