Home range, movement and habitat selection of dholes (Cuon alpinus) in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand. Biodiversitas 21: 5915-5926. This study aimed to examine the home range, movement and habitat selection of dholes (Cuon alpinus) in Khao Yai National Park from January 2017 to September 2019 with the objective of studying their movement, diel activity and habitat selection. Based on Autocorrelated Kernel density home range estimation, the results showed that the average home range size of the adult female dhole was 64.6  km2, while the adult male dhole had an average home range size of 132.9 km2. It was found from the monthly analysis that the home range size varied by animal gender and the period of their denning and parenting time. It was also found that the distance traveled by the female dhole was 10.2 km/day, while the male dhole traveled around 19.3 km/day. The overall analysis discovered that the dholes were most active during dawn and dusk. Further, the level of activity increased from May onwards. The grassland and mixed deciduous habitat types significantly affected the selection of the dholes. Case-control linear logistic regression analysis between the distance of the location and habitat types was extremely and positively significant with grassland, which signified the high activity of dhole in the grassland. However, the result was negative with mixed deciduous forest, which was the habitat of the dhole. Autocorrelation functions demonstrated high activity occurred during the early morning and after sunset, which showed that the dholes could adapt for survival in the area, even with recreational activities in the park. The results of this study could contribute to knowledge concerning the species’ movement for long-term species management and conservation.

Abstract. Pototan BL, Capin NC, Delima AG, Novero AU. 2021. Assessment of mangrove species diversity in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, Philippines. Biodiversitas 22: 144-153. This study determined mangrove species diversity and community structure in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, Philippines. Ten 150m long transects plots were laid out perpendicular through the mangrove forests yielding 30 plots and total sampled area of 3, 000 m2. Individual trees within plots were counted, identified and measured for diameter at breast height (dbh) and tree height. For diversity analysis, Shannon-Weiner Index of Diversity (H’), Pielou’s Index of Evenness (J), Simpson’s Index of Dominance (C), and Effective Number of Species (ENS) were used. Results showed a total of 33 species belonging to 14 families, 31 of which are true mangroves and two associates. Two threatened species, the endangered Camptostemon philippinensis and vulnerable Avicennia rumphiana, and three near-threatened species were recorded. Diversity analysis showed a high diversity index (H’=3.145; ENS=23) and high species evenness (J=0.85) but low dominance (C=0.05). Sonneratia alba attained the greatest importance value (IV=59.79%) due to high relative density, relative frequency, and relative dominance. Also, Rhizophoraceae is the most represented among 14 families. Hence, Banaybanay being highly diverse with the presence of threatened and near-threatened mangrove species calls for immediate protection and conservation measures because of increasing anthropogenic activities and environmental problems observed in the area.

Abstract. Indrayani Y, Anwari S. 2021. Effect of termite activity on soil chemical properties using baiting systems at an arboretum area in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2125-2130. Termites play an essential and positive role as decomposers in nature, apart from being known as wood-destroying insects. These two varying characteristics led to the development of termite control technology, capable of digesting cellulose components and making soils rich in organic compounds. Therefore, this study examines the soil's biogenic structure due to termite activity using a control technology with a baiting system. The bait was made with various compositions of eucalyptus leaves, paper and cardboard, 60%: 40%: 0%, 60%: 20%: 20%, 60%: 0%: 40%, 0%: 100%: 0% and 0%: 0%: 100% with a size of 2cm x 2cm x 1cm and eucalyptus leaves as an attractant. In addition, a PVC tube measuring 10 cm diameter and 20 cm height with 25 holes consisting of 3 mm diameter on the side was used for field application. A total of 100 grams of bait for each composition was entered into the feed tube and placed in the Arboretum of Tanjungpura University, West Kalimantan, with three replications and left for 21 days. At the end of the observation period, the soil’s biogenic structures with termites were analyzed to determine their chemical properties. Furthermore, the same analysis was also carried out on the soil surrounding the test area without termite activity for comparison. The results showed that the pH, C/N ratio, C-Organic, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium contents as well as Cation Exchange Capacity of the soil produced from the tube containing the bait with a composition of 60%: 0%: 40% was significantly higher. This means that the soil's biogenic structure produced by termite activity with a baiting system increases land productivity and chemical properties.

Baseline susceptibility of Philippine Ostrinia furnacalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) populations to insecticidal Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 proteins and validation of candidate diagnostic concentration for monitoring resistance. Biodiversitas 22: 956-960. This study estimated the baseline susceptibility of Ostrinia furnacalis populations from the Philippines, to purified insecticidal Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 proteins and determined a diagnostic concentration (DC) through a validation experiment. The insect populations were collected from separate sites of corn farms in Northern and Central Luzon and in South Cotabato province of the island of Mindanao. Dose-response bioassays using artificial diet surface overlay method were conducted on eight populations. The bioassay results revealed that the LC50 of Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 to O. furnacalis ranged from 0.03 ng/cm2 to 0.18 ng/cm2 and 1.40 ng/cm2 to 9.98 ng/cm2, respectively. The relative susceptibility ratios between the most susceptible and most tolerant populations were 6-fold for Cry1A.105 and about 7-fold for Cry2Ab2. The candidate diagnostic concentrations (DC) based on the LC99 were calculated using the baseline bioassay data for both Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2. The validation was performed on populations from the same locations used in the baseline susceptibility assay and a reference strain to produce at least 99% mortality for each protein. Data showed that populations tested with Cry1A.105 produced average mortality of at least 99% for the upper limit, while this was observed in the LC99 estimate for Cry2Ab2. The validated diagnostic concentration can be used for monitoring the resistance development of O. furnacalis exposed to Bt Corn, MON89034, in the Philippines.

Abstract. Suwardi AB, Mardudi, Navia ZI, Baihaqi, Muntaha. 2021. Documentation of medicinal plants used by Aneuk Jamee tribe in Kota Bahagia sub-district, South Aceh, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 6-15. Aneuk Jamee is one of the ethnic communities living along the western-south coast of Aceh. Various plants are used by the Aneuk Jamee tribe as a traditional medicine in treating diseases and disorders. The aim of this study was therefore to document the medicinal plants used by the Aneuk Jamee tribe in the Kota Bahagia sub-district, South Aceh, Indonesia. This study was conducted in three villages, namely Jombo Keupok, Seuneubok Kuranji, and Alur Dua Mas, Kota Bahagia subdistrict, South Aceh District, Aceh Province. This study was based on field surveys, plant collection, and interviews with the local people. Interviews were performed with 60 informants selected by using the Snowball Sampling technique. A total of 96 medicinal plant species, consisting of 50 families, have been documented to be used by the Aneuk Jamee tribe in the Kota Bahagia subdistrict. Fifty-nine (61%) species are cultivated and 37 (39%) species are wild. Leaves are the most widely used plant part (28%), followed by the fruit (19%), flower and tuber (6% each), seed (3%), and sap (2%) and the main mode of preparations are decoction (60%), followed by raw consumption (14%), smeared (10%), pounded (7%), dropped (6%), and affixed and squeezed (1% each). The high informant consensus factor (ICF=0.98) was assigned to the diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism category.

Abstract. Hanfayani T, Yuzammi, Hadiah JT. 2020. Inflorescence morphology and development of suweg (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson. Biodiversitas 21: 5835-5844. Inflorescence of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson consists of two main parts: spathe and spadix. Detailed information on its development, however, is not yet available. This study aimed to investigate the development and morphology of suweg’s inflorescence, to reveal the anthesis of male and female flowers, and to observe its insect visitors. The study observed 46 inflorescences, ten of which were measured for detailed developments. Inflorescences were observed from bud emergence to withering during one flowering cycle. The results showed that the flowering process included six phases which altogether required 22 to 36 days, namely the developments of inflorescence bud, cataphyll, spathe and spadix, appendix, fully bloomed inflorescence, and flowers anthesis. The inflorescence height including peduncle was 48–75 cm, spathe 19–50 cm long, spathe circle 65–176 cm, appendix 13–33 cm long, and appendix circle 45–80 cm. Three appendix forms were observed: ovate (43.48%), triangular conic (41.30%), and rounded (15.22%). Female flower anthesis occurred one day prior to male flower anthesis. Insect visitors found during anthesis were Lucilia sericata (Calliphoridae), Sarcophaga sp. (Sarcophagidae), and Trigona speciosa (Apidae).

Contaminated agar media was often depleted due to the growth of microbes, which is undesirable for culture. However, the contaminating microbes usually have a distinctive morphology. This research aimed to identify the potential of red-pigmented bacteria originated from the contamination of Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Fruit fly larvae that grow on contaminated tryptic soy agar were accompanied by the appearance of the red-pigmented bacteria colony. The bacterial colonies were purified by the re-streaking method on tryptic soybean agar. This strain was characterized morphologically, biochemically, and molecularly. Results showed that the MBC1 strain was identified as Serratia marcescens. The various metal susceptibility tests at 25 ppm did not affect the growth of the MBC1 strain. Meanwhile, it was also able to inhibit the growth of certain pathogens such as Aspergillus niger, Candida sp., Fusarium sp., and Rigidoporous sp. Strain MBC1 was able to produce antioxidant compounds. The lipolytic and amylolytic activity can be developed for bioremediate agriculture waste and biosurfactant production.

Short communication: Physiological response to drought in North Sulawesi (Indonesia) local rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars at the tissue level in hydroponic culture. Biodiversitas 22: 58-64. Water availability influenced the metabolism processes in the plants and this condition could change water balance in the cells as well as restricting the growth and production of crops. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of in vitro polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000-induced water deficit on the relative water content and chlorophylls (total, a, and b) concentration as physiological response in leaf segments of North Sulawesi (Indonesia) local rice cultivars (cvs. Superwin, Ombong, Burungan, and Temo). The rice leaves were cut into 1 cm x 1 cm segments and were treated under both control (0 MPa) and water deficit (-0.25 and -0.5 MPa) using PEG 8000 as osmoticum. The experiment was factorial completely randomized block design with 4 sampling times (0, 4, 8, and 12 hours) and three replicates. Interaction of water deficit duration and PEG 8000 treatment resulted in a significant difference in leaf relative water content. The leaf relative water content at PEG -0.5 MPa after 8 and 12 hours of treatments was lower than at control (PEG 0 MPa) when the treatment commenced (0 hour). The concentration of chlorophylls (total, a, and b) were significant differences among cultivars and water deficit durations. This study showed that leaf relative water content was a potential physiological indicator of PEG 8000-induced water deficit in North Sulawesi local rice at the tissue level in hydroponic culture.

Natmataung National Park (NTNP) is an important biodiversity hotspot in Myanmar, yet it is threatened by various anthropogenic activities, leading to deforestation and forest degradation. As such, the park needs to be restored to bring back its main function of conserving biodiversity. Ecological restoration in NTNP needs assessment of forest restoration potential through forest degradation condition. This research aimed: (1) to assess forest stand parameters of tree density, basal area, Above Ground Biomass (AGB), and Above Ground Carbon (AGC) at plot level and study area level through sampling with fixed area in the NTNP watershed, (2) to compare the accessed forest stand parameters of old-growth forest (OF) and secondary forest (SF) (per plot individual level and per stem individual level) and tree species richness and diversity of OF and SF (per plot individual level only) in order to know the forest degradation condition. A total of 69 square plots were sampled to achieve such aims. This study found two main results: (1) the estimation of stand parameters in both OF and SF at the plot level and study area level had acceptable statistical proration: (2) stand parameters at stem level had significant differences in which OF had overall higher values of parameters than in SF. Based on the results of this study, we recommend that the OF sites should be conserved through sustainable forest management, while the SF sites should be restored to mimic condition in OF through the implementation of assisted natural regeneration (ANR) with highest dominant native tree species, and the abandoned fallow lands should be restored using pioneer native tree species.

Abstract. Benlembarek K, Lograda T, Ramdani M, Figueredo G, Chalard P. 2021. Chemical composition and antibacterial activities of Rhus tripartita essential oils from Algeria. Biodiversitas 22: 482-492. The yield of Rhus tripartita essential oils in Algeria is low with an average of 0.16 ± 0.017. The chemical composition of the oils was determined by GC-GC / MS analysis. Seventy-eight compounds were identified with an average of 92.3 ± 26.4% in the total oil. The ?-pinene (58.72 ± 14.45%), ?3-carene (5.21 ± 6.89%), caryophyllene-Z (4.55 ± 4.68%) and ?-pinene (3.07 ± 1 85%) are the major components of the oils of R. tripartita populations. The results reveal a notable difference between the chemical composition of essential oils from male and female populations. The oils of this species are composed of four chemotypes, the ?3-carene, ?-pinene; limonene chemotype characterizes the male populations of Tamanrasset and Boussaada. The ?-pinene - ?3-carene - caryophyllene-Z chemotype characterizes the male populations of M’sila and Mergueb. The female M’sila population is characterized by the ?-pinene - ?3-carene - ?-cadinene chemotype. The remaining populations show the ?-pinene - ?-pinene - caryophyllene-Z chemotype. The evaluation of antibacterial activities reveals that Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are not sensitive to the essential oils of R. tripartita. In contrast, Enterococcus faecalis is the most sensitive to the oils.
