Pollution by Metallic trace elements (MTE) has become one of the most serious environmental problems resulting from human activity. Plants, which are the base of the food chain, can take up MTE from the soil solution; hyper-accumulators can store high levels of heavy metals in their aerial parts at high concentrations. These plants can be used in phytoremediation. This study aimed to investigate the accumulation of MTE in the leaves of Nerium oleander to monitor environmental pollution of several areas in the province of Setif, Algeria. The samples of N. oleander leaves were collected from 20 urban areas in Setif Province. The concentrations of seven metallic trace elements (Cd, Mn, Pb, Sb, Cu, Bi and Fe) were determined using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AASF). The results show that the concentrations of heavy metals in the leaves of N. oleander, in general, were very high, far exceeding the certified standard ranges. The order of MTE in the leaves was found as follows: Mn> Sb> Bi> Pb> Fe> Cu> Cd. Our findings indicate that although N. oleander showed a significant capacity to accumulate MTE, the urban areas of Setif province were highly polluted by heavy metals. The presence of metal ions in the aerial parts of the plant indicates that N. oleander is a hyper-accumulator of metals with tolerance to Mn, Sb, and Pb, and can be used as a bio-monitor. This opens up prospects for its application for soil phytoremediation.

Pelung is one of the crowing-typed chickens from Indonesia. The bioacoustics characters of Indonesian crowing-typed chicken especially Pelung chicken were less documented. This study aimed to characterize crowing sound and to study the inbreeding coefficient of the Pelung chicken. In this study, crowing voice of 77 male Pelung chicken was recorded. Bioacoustics analyses of crowing voice were done using Adobe Audition CS5.5 and PRAAT 5.3.66 software. The results showed that chicken crowing consisted of front sound (first syllable), middle sound (second syllable) and end sound (third syllable). Each section of Pelung crowing had specific characteristics compared to other chicken breeds and varied among champions and nonchampions. Champion chicken had slowed and clear first and second syllable, sound energy was lower in first syllable then decrease at second syllable and has bitu gantung third syllable. Crowing duration and fundamental frequency (F0) of champion and non-champion were not statically different. The inbreeding coefficient reached 0.53 in several Pelung champions. Based on the research findings, bioacoustics software was applicable to assist the chicken show.

Biodiversitas 22: 3264-3275. Snakebites remain a major health issue in tropical and subtropical regions in the world. The limited access of antivenom sera in remote areas of many countries forces populations to rely on plant-based remedies to manage snakebite-induced injury. In this study, we conducted an ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used for the management of snakebites in the district of Bissok (Northern Gabon). After collecting and verifying the authenticity of the plants, we further performed their phytochemical analysis. The procedure used in this study involved a structured questionnaire and direct interviews of local populations. Overall, data collected on-site included local names, the part of the plant used, the preparation, and the route of administration. The presence of some phytochemical compounds was determined according to standard methods. Overall, a total of 29 species of plants belonging to 20 different families were reported to be used to treat snakebites. The plants used were herbs (44.80%), trees (24.10%), shrubs (20.70%), liana (10.30%), and rhizomes (6.90%). They were mainly used as poultice or crush, and to a lesser extent as decoction and maceration. Regarding the route of administration, interviewees reported mainly external use on the site of the bite. Concerning the chemical composition, we found that the antivenom plants were rich in chemical compounds known to have antivenom, antipyretic and antimicrobial properties, e.g. alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, steroids, coumarins, phenols, tannins gallic Our results open avenues to develop venom enzyme inhibitory assays.

Biodiversitas 22: 3972-3983. Mangrove forest in Sungai Apit Sub-district, Siak District, Riau is one of mangrove ecosystems that is still partly natural with some parts being damaged or rehabilitated. Degraded mangrove forest is a mangrove forest that has been disturbed by human activities and natural factors. This study aimed to investigate the floristic composition and stand structure of trees and seedlings in mangrove forests in Sungai Apit, Siak District, Riau Province, Indonesia in three vegetation conditions, i.e., natural, degraded, and rehabilitated forests. Line Transect Plot Method was used to collect data in three stations (i.e., Rawa Mekar Jaya, Sungai Rawa and Mengkapan villages) where each station consisted of three transects with a size of 10 x 100 m. A total of 20 species belonging 11 families were recorded in the studied sites with Rhizophora apiculata was the most dominant species in all forest conditions. The natural forest had the highest number of species followed by rehabilitated forest and the degraded forest. Stand structure in terms of tree density, mean diameter of mangrove trunks, and basal area differed significantly across the three vegetation conditions with the natural forest had the highest values followed by the rehabilitated forest, while the degraded forest was the lowest. For the seedling, the lowest number of species was observed in the degraded forest while the highest was in the rehabilitated forest, indicating the result of rehabilitation activities. Yet, seedling density in natural forests was lower than that in rehabilitated and degraded forests. This study provides information that differences in structure, species composition and recruitment of seedlings in mangrove forests in the three conditions and locations can be related to differences in recovery time and degradation levels which may be important for developing mangrove forest management and conservation strategies.

The performance of agronomic traits, genetic variability, and correlation studies for yield and its components in some red rice (Oryza sativa) promising lines. Biodiversitas 22: 3994-4001. Improving a new variety commonly depends on the nature and magnitude of genetic variability and its utilization, followed by selection and evaluation before being released into new superior types. The present study aims to estimate the genetic variability and relation between yield and its related traits of the red rice promising lines. The experiment was arranged based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among rice lines for 12 quantitative traits. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) value was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), indicating a negligible environmental influence in the phenotypic expression of traits. High heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance were recorded for grain total per panicle and grain yield per hill. Grain yield observed a highly significant positive correlation with panicle length (0.63), percentage of filled grains (0.53), grain weight per panicle (0.54), and thousand-grain weight (0.52). It correlated negatively with days to 50% flowering (-0.61) and days to maturity (-0.48). The study indicated that panicle length, percentage of filled grains, grain weight per panicle, and thousand-grain weight are important yield-related traits and could be used for selection to improve the genetic potential of rice yield.

The differences of body measurements in captive Sumatran elephant on different captivity management and sex. Biodiversitas 22: 2619-2624. Sumatran elephants are one of wild animals in Indonesia that currently received critically endangered status. This study aimed to measure the body size of both sexes of Sumatran elephants in the semi-captive (ECCs) and full captive (Zoo) management for conservation purposes. This study was conducted in ECCs in Sumatran island and Zoo on Java island. Body measurements (Chest Girth, Length, Height, Tarsal and Carpal Circumference) were collected from a total of 49 samples of captive Sumatran elephants (25 from EECs and 24 from Zoo). Data were analyzed using a completely randomized factorial design with different management and sex as the factors. The results showed that BL (304.92 vs 311.13) and TC (76.44 vs 77.50) were significantly different (P<0.05) across captivity managements. Sex categories (male and female) showed significant results (P<0.01) on CG (321.71 vs 302.46), BL (303.50 vs 272.49), BH (230.14 vs 208.23) and TC (82.29 vs 74.83). No interaction was identified between captive management and sex on body measurements. In conclusion, there were significant differences in body size of male and female elephants. This result contributed well-researched information to evaluate the conservation management based on body size and for further research on Sumatran elephant conservation.

Analysis of growth and nutritional quality of sea worms (Nereis virens) as a mass cultured natural feed on different substrate media thicknesses. Biodiversitas 22: 3299-3305. Sea worms (Nereis virens) grow slowly. The thickness of the substrate used in mass culture affects their growth, because N. virens is a deposit feeder that feeds on organic matter provided by other organisms; therefore, the growth rate slows down if the substrate thickness is not suitable. This study aimed to determine and analyze the growth and nutritional quality of N. virens as a natural feed in mass culture at different substrate media thicknesses. This study was conducted at the Marine Science Techno Park (MSTP) UNDIP, Jepara, Central Java. The test animals were two-month-old sea worms, weighing 0.15 to 0.5 g/individual. The maintenance media was the mangrove mud substrate. Feeding was carried out at a fixed feeding rate, twice a day at 07.00 and 19.00 hrs, and the animals were maintained at a density of 45 individuals/L for 35 days. The experimental research method was a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications: treatment A (media thickness of 4 cm), B (media thickness of 6 cm), C (media thickness of 8 cm), and D (media thickness of 10 cm). The parameters studied were absolute growth, specific growth rate (SGR), efficiency of feed utilization (EFU), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), survival rate (SR), proximate analysis, profile of amino acid and fatty acids. The results showed that the highest absolute weight (6.76 g); SGR (6.34%); EFU (69.73%); FCR (1.36%); PER (1.74%); SR (97.04%); and nutritional quality (55.75% protein, 22.62% fat, 45.66 ppm methionine, and 7.7% eicosapentaenoic acid values were obtained when N. virens was mass-cultured in a medium with a thickness of 8 cm (Treatment C). Thus, the thickness of the media substrate had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the absolute weight, SGR, EFU, FCR, PER, and SR in N. virens.

Variability and relationship of six Indonesian shallots (Allium cepa var. ascalonicum) cultivars based on amino acid profiles and fried shallot’s sensory characteristics. Biodiversitas 22: 3327-3332. Shallot is an essential spice in the daily menu and processed food due to its unique flavor. Therefore information regarding the correlated compounds responsible for flavor in several cultivars of shallot will be important to elucidate. Since the amino acids profile is a key component of flavor character, this study aimed to determine the variability of amino acid profiles among six shallot cultivars related to fried shallot’s sensory characteristics. The six shallot cultivars were Bima Brebes, Bauji, Batu Ijo, Tajuk, Super Philip, and Rubaru. The shallot bulb was cultivated in the same area. The bulb size was analyzed using an analytical balance, the amino acids profile was analyzed using HPLC instrument, and sensory characteristics of fried shallots were analyzed using the rate-all-that-apply descriptive method. The result showed that the shallots contained a high content of glutamic acid, arginine, and aspartic acid. Based on fresh weight, Batu Ijo was significantly different than the other cultivars which comprised Tajuk, Rubaru, Bauji, Super Philip and Bima Brebes. Clustering based on amino acid profiles of the fresh bulb, they were divided into three groups. The first group consisted only Bauji, and the second group consisted of Rubaru, Batu Ijo, Super Philip and Tajuk, the third group was only Bima Brebes. Based on the sensory characteristics of fried shallots, they were divided into three groups. The first group comprised of Bauji and Tajuk, the second group comprised of Rubaru alone, and the third group comprised of Batu Ijo, Super Philip, and Bima Brebes. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that L-phenylalanine, L-arginine, and glycine have a significant positive correlation with a sweet taste of fried shallot, indicated that amino acids profile is an important parameter for shallot flavor.

Comparing ethnobotanical knowledge of medicinal plants between community health workers and local experts in the “Mata da Paraíba” zone, northeastern Brazil. Biodiversitas 22: 5606-5616. The use of medicinal plants is an old practice in a society that has been transmitted to this day, with local experts recognized in many communities and being encouraged through public policies. In Brazil, Community Health Agents (CHWs) can be important for the dissemination of this practice, due to their work with the Health System and the community. This study aimed to compare the knowledge of medicinal plants between CHWs and local experts in the community of Timbó, the municipality of Jacaraú (Paraíba, northeastern Brazil). Semi-structured interviews were conducted addressing local names of plants, their indications, parts used, and preparation methods. The data on the species local importance were analyzed through the use value (UV) and relative importance (RI) methods. Local experts cited more species than CHWs. There was great local importance of some species both among local specialists and among CHWs. However, some species were highlighted exclusively among local specialists. Decoction and infusion stood out among the preparation methods and leaf, flower, and seed were the most prominent parts used. The diseases treated with plants are mainly related to the respiratory and digestive systems. Our findings show a correspondence between the CHWs’ knowledge and local experts’ knowledge, which leads us to believe that experts and CHWs may be sharing the same local knowledge in the study community.

Abstract. Mursyidin DH, Hernanda MA. 2021. Phylogenetic positions of three Amorphophallus species natively growing in the Meratus Mountains, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2821-2828. Information on genetic diversity and relationships (phylogenetic position) of germplasm is essential for conservation and breeding programs in the future. Here, we focused on determining the genetic diversity and phylogenetic positions of three native Amorphophallus species from the Meratus Mountains, South Kalimantan, Indonesia, using the rbcL marker. The results show that this germplasm has a medium level of genetic diversity (0.63). The phylogenetic analyses (NJ, ML, and MP) revealed that Amorphophallus from the region has a unique or specific relationship position. In this case, A. muelleri with an accession number of MT818204 and MT818205 are grouping and have close relatedness with A. muelleri previously deposited in GenBank (AF497087.1). Three samples of A. paeoniifolius (MT818202, MT818203, and MT818206) have also clustered with the same species (DQ012500.1; AF497091.1). An interesting result was shown by A. borneensis (MT818211) that demonstrated a close relationship with A. tinekeae (DQ012505.1) in NJ and ML analyses, not with a similar species (DQ012484.1) in MP analysis. Further, a bootstrap analysis on an earlier analysis supported the separation. Thus, this information is valuable in supporting the conservation and breeding programs of this germplasm, both locally and globally.
