Monthly Chaetocerotales diversity and abundance, and its relationship with water physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton diversity in Carey Island mangrove ecosystem, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 22: 2919-2927. Globally, phytoplankton of order Chaetocerotales has been reported to cause monospecific bloom events. The blooms that normally lead to ecosystem instability, also physically responsible for histological and physical damages to fishes. Regarding that order Chaetocerotales often display significant temporal variability, this study aimed to investigate the monthly variability of species composition and cell density of phytoplankton of order Chaetocerotales during high tide period immersion were investigated over a year period. In addition, this present study also aimed to analyze the relationship between Chaetocerotales diversity and abundance with physical and chemical parameters that potentially controlling their temporal variability. Samplings were carried out from April 2009 until March 2010 in the mangrove ecosystem of Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia. Of 84 phytoplankton taxa recorded, 18 species belonged to order Chaetocerotales, i.e. the genera Bacteriastrum and Chaetoceros. Although initially the sampling was designed to study the overall phytoplankton, the study also aimed at high temporal variability in Chaetocerotaceae cells density has called for this paper to be written. Interestingly, order Chaetocerotales showed to have negative correlation with the total phytoplankton species. Chaetocerotales blooms at the study site were represented by multispecies blooms, with Chaetoceros curvisetus as the highest species in the events. Dissolved oxygen, on the other hand, showed to have negative correlation Chaetocerotales' cells density. All of the species, except the Chaetoceros subtilis and Chaetoceros neglectus displayed significant temporal monthly variability across twelve months of sampling. Nitrate, phosphate and temperature are potentially the parameters that stimulate the growth of the order, consequently causing bloom events.

Abstract. Biag RA, Alejandro GJD. Diversity, distribution, and conservation status of Rubiaceae species in Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape, Luzon, Philippines. Biodiversitas 22: 3627-3636. Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS) is the largest protected area (PA) in the province of Cagayan, Luzon, Philippines. As part of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range and being contiguous with the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, there is no doubt that this PA would display species endemism and richness. Hence, botanical surveys through purposive sampling in seven barangays/districts were conducted in the PPLS to determine the species diversity and distribution of Rubiaceae. This study also aims to identify the endemic species and determine their conservation status. Forty-two species of Rubiaceae belonging to 19 genera and 13 tribes were documented in the current study. The most species-rich tribes are Spermacoceae (9 sp.), followed by Psychotrieae (7 sp.), Pavetteae (6 sp.), Naucleae (5 sp.), Ixoreae (4 sp.), Aleisantheae (2 sp.), Mussaendeae (2 sp.), and Vanguerieae (2 sp.). The rest of the tribes, i.e., Augusteae, Coffeeae, Gardenieae, Knoxieae, and Morindeae, are represented by a single species. Minanga, Nabbabalayan and Sisim harbor the most species. Results show that 19 Philippine endemic species are thriving in the PPLS. Of these, four are threatened species; one is near threatened, three being least concern, two as data deficient, and the rest were not evaluated.

Short Communication: The resistance of Styrax sumatrana wood of varying growth sites and stem axial positions to subterranean termite (Coptotermes curvignathus) attack. Biodiversitas 22: 3192-3198.  As mega-biodiversity country, Indonesia consists of a large number of flora and fauna, including wood-destroying organisms such as termites.  One of the native trees known as a resin producer is Tobanese incense (Styrax sumatrana). The existence of this species has been studied for several wood properties such as physical, mechanical, and chemical properties, while its natural durability against termite attack has not been studied. As a country known as a haven for termites, the study on incense wood durability is very important for further utilization.  The objective of this research was to analyze the natural durability of S. sumatrana wood from two growing locations and different stem positions using a graveyard test. The Graveyard test method was used to investigate the mass loss and percentage of damage of the sampled woods. The test sample used is 2x2x20 cm3 in size. The sample is buried as deep as 15 cm and leaving 5 cm of the part that is above the soil surface. The distance between the samples is 60 cm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the incense wood originating from Pakpak Bharat and North Tapanuli districts can be classified as durable class V (Vulnerable category) and severely damaged (E category) with the respective mass loss percentages ranging from 22.03-31.70% and 18.46-20.79% and damage percentages ranging from 86.55-96.27% and 78.02-86.32%. In conclusion, the positions of the stem and the sites where it grows caused a difference in the natural durability value of Styrax sumatrana wood. The incense wood originating from North Tapanuli District had slightly better durability against subterranean termite attacks than that from Pakpak Bharat District, although overall the samples from these two sites fell into the same durability class.

Regression model analysis for prediction of body weight from body measurements in female Batur sheep of Banjarnegara District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2723-2730. Bodyweight is an important aspect of livestock management. The present study was undertaken to estimate correlation coefficients between biometric traits and identify best predictor of body weight in female Batur sheep from body measurements. Data on body weight and body measurements (body length: BL, chest girth: CG and withers height: WH) were collected from 73 female Batur sheep in Batur Village, Banjarnegara District, Central Java Province, Indonesia. Batur sheep were grouped into 3 categories based on their age, namely groups <1.5 years, 1.5-2.5 years and >2.5 years. The data were analyzed using simple, multiple, and automatic linear regression methods using the SPSS computer software version 25 platform. The correlation coefficient, coefficient determination, adjusted coefficient determination, residual standard error, Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, and Akaike information criterion corrected were used to determine the best regression formula for the prediction of BW. The average BW (kg), BL (cm), CG (cm), and WH (cm) of 49.27, 63.11, 91.41, and 56.82, respectively was observed in the present study. The correlation coefficients of 0.433, 0.866, and 0.369 for BW with BL, CG, and WH were observed in the present study. The best prediction of BW using two predictors (BL and GC) was BW =-56.522 + 0.509BL + 0.843CG, followed by using three predictors (BL, CG, and WH) was BW =-57.897+ 0.505BL + 0.839CG + 0.034WH, and using the only one predictor (CG) was BW =-28.443 + 0.905CG. The study revealed that CG and its combination with other linear body measurements can effectively define the body weight in Batur sheep. However, the highest R2 of 0.782 was observed when CG and BL were used as predictors.

Abstract. Surianshah S. 2021. Environmental awareness and green products consumption behavior: A case study of Sabah State, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 22: 2685-2692. The severe weather changes in the Sabah state of Malaysia have raised a great concern for us to address it through environmental awareness. Addressing the problem is important because Sabah is one of the main tourist destinations in Malaysia with its beautiful biodiversity, flora and fauna. Hence, this paper examines the level and relationship between environmental awareness and green product consumption behavior in Sabah. Here, we mainly measure environmental awareness using proxies of awareness towards climate change issues. A systematic questionnaire survey was conducted to 300 respondents of Sabah, including Tawau, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, and Kota Kinabalu. The descriptive statistics results show that people in Sabah have a high level of environmental awareness and green product consumption. In particular, they aware to conserve and preserve the tropical rainforest ecosystem and consume green products for future generations benefits. However, to note that there is still a low Sabahan's awareness about impact of overuse of natural resources and the importance of consuming green products in daily life. The estimate of the relationship between both variables shows a positive and statistically significant effect, especially in Kota Kinabalu. Also, the effect is pronounced when we address potential endogeneity bias in the baseline model. This study suggests that the government, policymakers, and youngsters continuously spread the benefits of green product consumption. This is because an increase in environmental awareness possibly helps mitigate environmental issues and lead to better biodiversity conservation and economic improvement in Sabah and Malaysia.

Biodiversitas 22: 2988-2994. Curcuma wanenlueanga Saensouk, Thomudtha & Boonma, a new species of Curcuma subgenus Curcuma (Zingiberaceae) from Thailand was described with detailed illustrations, and photographs. The dominant morphological description is terminal inflorescence, leaf adaxially green with reddish-purple along the midrib, leaf-sheath with reddish-brown tinge. Moreover, the color and smell rhizome of C. wanenlueanga has yellow with a darker core internally. It is distributed in Mae Hong Son Province, Northern Thailand, and cultivated throughout the country, i.e. Nakhon Nayok, Maha Sarakham, Chiang Mai, Tak, Chantaburi, Suratthani, and Kanchanaburi Provinces. It is used as Thai traditional medicinal. It grows in in sandy loam soil and well-drained in the mixed-deciduous forest, at elevation 700-900 m asl. It is accompanied by a revised key to 26 species of Curcuma subgenus Curcuma from Thailand.

Abstract. Saensouk P, Saensouk S. 2021. Diversity, traditional uses and conservation status of Zingiberaceae in Udorn Thani Province, Thailand. Biodiversitas 22: 3083-3097. Southeast Asia is recognized as the center of Zingiberaceae distribution with Thailand is among the important regions. Nonetheless, a comprehensive study in a regional context that investigates the biological aspects of the family is lacking. This study aimed to determine the diversity, distribution, ecology, conservation status, and traditional uses of the family Zingiberaceae in Udorn Thani Province, northeastern Thailand. In total, three tribes, nine genera, 47 species of Zingiberaceae were identified during a botanical survey between January and December 2020 in Udorn Thani. Curcuma and Kempferia were the most diverse genera with nine and eight species, respectively, followed by Zingiber as the third most diverse genus with seven species and Alpinia as the fourth most diverse genus with six species. While the genera Etlingera and Hedychium were the least diverse with each containing just one species. For all Zingiberaceae species, the flowering period was found between March and September, while the fruiting period was found between May and October. Zingiberaceae was found with the greatest frequency in five ecosystem types, namely cultivated areas, deciduous dipterocarp forest, mixed deciduous forest, dry evergreen forest and river basin. Twenty-one species were reported as rare species in research area, i.e. Boesenbergia baimaii, B. isanensis, Kaempferia picheansoonthonii, and K. udonensis. It was revealed that the traditional uses of many Zingiberaceae species from villagers in Udorn Thani Province were most frequently used for medicine, food, ornamentals, rituals, spices, perfume and cosmetics. Rhizomes, roots, pseudostems, young inflorescences, inflorescences, young leaves, leaves and fruits were the parts of this plant used.

Abstract. Saensouk P, Saensouk S. 2021. Taxonomic studies and three new records on genus Geostachys (Baker) Ridl. in Thailand. Biodiversitas 22: 3057-3067. A comprehensive taxonomic study and three new records of genus Geostachys (Baker) Ridl. in Thailand have not been reported. This research aimed to study the taxonomical aspect of the genus Geostachys in Thailand based on herbarium collections, fresh materials, and available literatures. Nine species of Geostachys have been recognized with their updated nomenclature in Thailand, namely G. angustifolia K. Larsen, G. chayanii Mayoe, G. decurvata (Baker) Ridl., G. holttumii K. Larsen, G. kerrii K. Larsen, G. penangensis Ridl., G. pierreana Gagnep., G. smitinandii K. Larsen, and. G. tratensis Picheans. & Mayoe. Three species, namely G. decurvata, G. pierreana, and G. penangensis are found to be new records to Thailand. Six species, namely G. angustifolia, G. chayanii, G. holttumii, G. kerrii, G. smitinandii, and G. tratensis were endemic to Thailand. The identification key to species, detailed descriptions, photographs, vernacular name, geographical distribution, ecology, phenology, conservation status, and taxonomic notes have been provided.

In vitro antibacterial activities of crude extracts of nine plants on multidrug resistance bacterial isolates of wound infections. Biodiversitas 22: 2641-2647. Wound infections caused by bacteria is a become serious health problems, multidrug resistance bacteria (MDR) have increased this problem more severely, and therefore, antibacterial agents from natural biological sources are necessary to overcome these problems. This study examined the antibacterial activities of nine plants, i.e. garlic (Allium sativum), Solo garlic (Allium sativum), Java plum leaf (Syzygium cumini), Java plum fruit (Syzygium cumini), lime (Citrus aurantifolia), Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix), Siamese weed (Chromolaena odorata), mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) and bitter melon (Momordica charantia), against MDR bacteria isolated from wounds. The antibacterial activities were evaluated using agar well diffusion assay to determine the inhibition zones, and microdilution method to determine the value of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The best antibacterial activities were calculated as the most extensive inhibition zones with the smallest MIC and MBC values. Ethanol extracts from five plants (garlic, Solo garlic, Java plum (leaf), Kaffir lime and bitter melon) showed antibacterial activities against three MDR bacteria isolated from wounds. The bitter melon extract had the largest zones, 19.3 mm (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA]), 10.6 mm (ESBL-producing Escherichia coli), and 13 mm (carbapenemase-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa [CRPA]) with the smallest MIC and MBC values against MRSA (3.12 and 25 mg/mL), ESBL- producing E. coli (12.25 and 50 mg/mL), and CRPA (6.25 and 25 mg/mL). This concludes that bitter melon has the potential to be developed as an antibacterial agent, particularly against MRSA strains, ESBL-producing E. coli, and CRPA that cause wound infections. Further in vivo research and the discovery of modes of action are needed to explain the antibacterial effects.

Abstract. Triadiati T, Sukarno N, Rahmah IS. 2021. Growth inhibition of Hydrilla verticillata by freshwater fungi. Biodiversitas 22: 2876-2882. The uncontrolled growth of hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle) in Mekarsari Fruit Garden, Bogor causes various losses. A Freshwater fungus is one of the alternatives to control hydrilla growth. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the damage and growth inhibition of hydrilla using freshwater fungi. Freshwater fungi were isolated from Lake Mekarsari Fruit Garden. Hydrilla growth characteristics observed were stem length, stem nodus number, number of healthy leaves, leaf number, leaf damage, wet and dry weight. The results showed that a total of seven isolates of freshwater fungi were obtained from Lake Mekarsari Fruit Garden. Two species, i.e. Myrothecium sp. and Stachybotrys sp. were selected to control hydrilla growth. Fungal treatment reduced the stem length and leaf number of hydrilla. The combination of both fungal isolates showed less leaf damage than Myrothecium sp. The damage of hydrilla leaves by Myrothecium sp. and Stachybotrys sp. were 98.07% and 78.71%, respectively.
